Fred Thompson teams up with McCain on trail
Wash Times ^ | 4/30/08 | Steve Dinan

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that Fred Thompson, who for much of last year's presidential shadow campaign was the great conservative hope, will finally campaign in person with John McCain.

Thompson, like most of the rest of McCain's former opponents for the Republican presidential nomination, has endorsed McCain but, unlike the others, had not appeared with him on the campaign trail.

Thompson gave only a terse endorsement to McCain after dropping out of the race earlier this year, saying, "This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country, and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain."

He'll have to say something more about McCain in this appearance — and it will be interesting to see how far he can go, given his sharp distinctions with McCain during the campaign, including charging that the senator had abandoned the Constitution and the Reagan coalition.

I would love that. Then, Sanford could replace DeMint with Rep. Gresham Barrett (who endorsed and campaigned with Fred in SC).

Last weekend I watched the NFL Draft in hopes that Fred Thompson (Defensive Lineman) McCain University would be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

I’m hoping for Fred as VP, too.

Then who do suggest?

Lt. Col. Allen West perhaps.

A political neophyte, but that may be exactly what we need.

Do yourselves a favor and listen to a couple of his talks on video.

The man sounds very squared away AND his being black sure wouldn't hurt.

Not likely. Thompson is too conservative and , at this point, doesn't buy into global warming.

But apparently he's not so principled that he will steer completely clear of the third Democrat in the race.  sigh

“I hope Fred becomes McCain’s VP.”

“Not likely. Thompson is too conservative and , at this point, doesn’t buy into global warming.”

It is not only “not likely”, Fred has stated that he would not be anyone’s VP. In my opinion Fred’s so called endorsement of McCain was not really an endorsement. Fred did not say “I endorse” in his statement. He only stated that it was time for Republicans to join ranks and support the Republican nominee. He even stated during his recent interview with Sean that he supports McCain against the Democrat nominee (Whomever that might be) even though he has differences with McCain. Fred does agrees with McCain on the war on terror, limited government spending and tax cuts.

He’s too busy working in Congress at the moment.

Let’s hope Fred wises him up in a hurry. I understand intellectually why GOP stalwarts will rally to the candidate but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. If Fred starts talking like John, that will really hurt.

I hope Fred becomes McCain’s VP.

That would be like Ross Perot running with Bob Dole.

Fred is a quitter. He had my support before, but he turns out to be a wimp.

As running mate for John McCain? How about John Kerry?

VP? Maybe I’ll keep Cheney around. Tancredo to head DHS, Hunter Defense, and Ron Paul as the head of the new Dept for Getting Rid of Useless Departments.

Yes, when even Tancredo endorses John McCain, you know that the GOP is closing ranks. They always do.

They may not like the candidate, but they know how to march to the tune.

All the Repubs have to do is not do anything stupid.

McCain's campaign manager must be having a blast writing commercials with the DIMS own words to use against them.

I wondered why McCain is even bothering to campaign in North Carolina, a state Republicans win easily in Presidential elections. It looks like he is just going to grab some free publicity and not let it all go to Clinton-Obama.

That settles it -- Pissant and Co. in '08!!!

You may want to switch the VP and SoD around to have a successor. You aren't getting any younger, ya know! ;*)

Why not Sanford for VP instead? He’s got executive experience and, having been born and raised in Florida, would help nail down those 27 EVs (as well as help motivate conservatives in all 50 states).

Maybe I can save a couple bucks...

You'll need 'em to help pay for the terrorists legal defense, more welfare for billions of illegal alien invaders and oil from hostile sources.

None of that will matter though, as we will no longer have a sovereign nation. But hey! A buck is a buck.

That will certainly be the case if the Communist Clinton or the black militant Obama take control of the White House.

Did not know that NC is republican territory. Could be much closer story with a messiah running. Obama previously was running ultra strong in the primary.

If Fred gets a chance to talk policy tomorrow, I just wish he would call McC out on cap n trade. Yeah, riiiggggghhhht.
