BAGHDAD, Iraq The Iraqi government has welcomed an order by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to pull his fighters off the streets.
Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told FOX News that the decision is "positive and responsive."
Al-Dabbagh said the move would "help the government confront those who are violating the law" and that it would help to "isolate those who are trying to destroy the government effort".
He said Iraqi security operations in Basra would not end until the "criminal elements" operating there are removed.
Also praising al-Sadr's orders was Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who said it was "a step in the right direction."

I wonder what’s up? I can’t help but be suspicious that there’s something worse coming. He isn’t doing this out of the goodness of his heart.
Translation:
Al Sadr’s thugs took a drubbing and they need time to regroup.
That’s what I think, too; it’s the famous Islamic tactic of declaring a “truce” to give themselves time to gear up again.
Furthermore, it’s my understanding that Mookie is not even in Iraq at the moment, and has not been personally involved in any of the fighting. He’s still holed up in Iran, so he’s unscathed in any case.
This happens every time Al-Sadr’s gang of thugs starts getting is rear-end handed to them on a platter. All of the sudden he decides its time to concede only to be back at his old tricks when the heat is off. The Palistinians play this game with Israel over an over again. If they do not stomp this punk out it will never end.
As I step back and survey the situation, in spite of the gloomy coverage by the British BBC refugee on Fox news, the reports we see here indicate the bad guys are being whipped pretty good. There are many deaths and wounded and scores of captures.
Mookie must blow recall, stop the charge, or lose his force. His problem seems to be that some of the troops don’t listen and continue to charge.
It appears that the government is saying thanks Mook and then continuing to destroy all comers.
After hearing all the good news lately about the number of terrorist casualties, I wondered if that really played into it.
I still don’t trust them.
when the enemy sues for peace, what he really wants is time to rebuild and ready for another try. I’d keep up the pressure.
I hope we don’t back off, but I’m afraid we will.
I hope things are really going that bad for them. It’d be good to keep the pressure on and really debilitate them.
IMHO Sard is a coward - he fled the country last year when we got too close. we need to add his head next to Saddam’s and his brats’.
I would think that getting their asses kicked would have something to do with it.
Their butts got handed to them on a silver plated copy of the koran, so now is the time to hide and wait.
What we should be doing is rounding up the clerics and closing the religious schools, which are really training facilities for terror.
The worldwide press would scream, but the Iraqi civilians would cheer. You wouldn't see it on the news, but they would cheer.
thats how i read it too
A free Iraq won’t be possible until the turd, Mookie Al Sadr is exterminated.
The only cure for Mookie is a time-out...a permanent time-out.
These idiots can’t fathom the concept that people can disagree without picking up an AK-47. Nearly fifteen hundred years of barbarism continue to color their view of even their own society.
Islam has been at war with civilization for over 1400 years, and it continues, today.
So the al-Sadr cancer goes into remission. Who doubts that it will be back?
Who is keeping this pos alive? Why haven’t our soldiers taken him out? Who protects him to let him call off his attacks so he can rearm and come back in June or October?
God I pray for our country!
