NEW YORK The newspaper industry has experienced the worst drop in advertising revenue in more than 50 years.

According to new data released by the Newspaper Association of America, total print advertising revenue in 2007 plunged 9.4% to $42 billion compared to 2006 -- the most severe percent decline since the association started measuring advertising expenditures in 1950.

This post reminded me to call Houston's only daily, The Houston Comical and complain about their trash being thrown in my yard once a week.

I canceled my subscription about 7 years ago for being so blatantly biased.

But once a week they throw an advertisement package to everyone it seems.

So, I called and complained that I didn't want anything to do with the Chronicle or its advertisers and to stop littering my yard.

There are several things at work here. First...newspapers used to do alot of local news...but the majority only have a page at the very most...for local stuff now. Second...cable has taken the news and basically ceased any reason to read a afternoon paper because you can get the up to date stuff off the local station. Third...most papers allowed themselves to become so political...that they could not interest folks from the opposite side. Fourth and final....Almost one third of every newspaper now....is advertisements. Even if they kept the paper at the same old 50 cents a day...for most of us...it seems like a waste.

Right one pepsi. You have to search for the local news in my local paper. If I want to hear about a house fire in Detroit or a flood in Bangladesh, they’ve got it covered. Their editorial pages consist of nothing more than free advertising for the DNC.

ads in the newspaper are for selling products.

however I no longer look to the newspaper for the ad or even the deal coupons. I have deal codes online, price shopping comparison tools. (always lookng for new ones folks)

I don’t even need the paper to buy a car or price compare for said car.

newspapers are for those who REFUSE to have internet.

I think to save themselves they need to move further to the left politically. They just aren’t liberal enough for mainstream America. If they all agree to do this I think they will see an astounding change in their ad revenues.
We can only hope.

FYI..Tampa Tribune isn’t a bad paper..lots of excellent local coverage,including cultural stuff, events, and great shopping circulars..I save a bundle each week. The newsstand price is $1.00 for Sunday 25 cents daily...yet they gave me an annual subscription..$40 for ONE year, 7 days, delivered..hard to beat

I haven’t seen a newspaper flyer in years and dumped TV in ‘97. I don’t do ads.

If I want something I usually go to one of two places: Costco and Craigslist.

AS I see it the newspaper people are into a self fulfilling prophesy. Nearly every day for the last year they have printed stories about recession, decreased retail sales, and reduced consumer confidance in the economy. If they keep it up for a few more months they may be able to drive this economy down tot he point where most of the reporters and editors lose their jobs. Media people think they are immune from the economic diseases they try their best to create when a Republican is in office. It is amazing how ignorant of economics the most editors and reporters are. They think people have to buy papers.. at least to look at the help wanted ads. The truth is the advertisers have cut advertising a lot.. but sales are only down a little. Newspapers try to cover the cost of printing and delivery with subscription money. The cost of producing the paper is born by advertising. When both go down, they can't avoid losing money. And the problem is they can only cut personel costs.

The fewer reporters the more wire copy they have to run. The more they depend on the wire services for news the fewer local stories get covrered and there is less local interest in the paper. Thus the circulation goes down producing further cuts in reporting, resulting in fewer readers, resulting in further cuts.

The problem with the internet solution is while there are usually only one or perhaps two papers in a large city, but there are thouands of internet sites to choose from. Getting anywhere near the the number of viewers to an internet site that a big city paper reaches is next to impossible.

I quit the Houston Chronicle years ago but still receive a free newspaper (the entire thing, not just the ads) about once every two weeks. Obviously the Chronicle is trying to pump up their subscription numbers so they can fake out unsuspecting advertisers. Hopefully they go out of business soon.
