Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student.
Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.
The New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a district-wide school wellness policy, said school spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo.
Shelli Sheridan, Michael's mother, said he is a top student with no previous disciplinary problems.
"It's too much. It's too unfair," she said. "He's never even had a detention."
Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.
He said he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice that the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive.

Security problems? Hm? Like bullies shaking down students for their lunch money? The truth is this principal does not have the bullies under control!
Also, I bet this 8th grade honor student is white. I also bet that the principal needs to punish this kid so that it can even out the minority punishments.
Yep, thank the Lord is wasn’t a Snickers bar — or, worse a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup!!! He probably would’ve been arrested and charged with possession of a deadly weapon!
We had vending machines in our high school that sold all manner of chips and snacks - including lifesavers and Little Debbie Peanut Butter Bars (I graduated in 1990). I think that machine literally probably kept some of us from starving during our extracurricular activities (which would last until 9 p.m. for some of us - at least during our dance concert season, and we weren’t exactly fat and unhealthy)...

I was thinking the same thing. Kid deserved it — Skittles are a gateway confection.

Really ? Not at mine , and we were not allowed to bring any to school either . Kids can eat all the crap they want when they get home ; no need to take the junk to school .
When I was in high school (graduated 1984), the school store sold gum and candy. It was open before classes, during break and lunches, sold things like notebooks, school bookcovers, pens and pencils, school banners & Tshirts. And they had a counter where you could get Bubblicious, Lifesavers and a few other goodies. It was run by the Student Government Assc.
Some of the groups in school sold candy bars, they were $1 but twice the size of a regular candy bar that sold for .50. I remember the Business Club, Band and FHA selling them openly. Both situations were school sanctioned.
Michael Sheridan claims he was in a school hallway after lunch Feb. 26 when a classmate asked if he wanted some candy. The student had a lunch box filled with candy and a wad of money, he said.
While Michael said he was unaware the sale was against school policy, he admitted the student selling it “was being secretive.” When a school administrator noticed the transaction, Michael said the student “threw the candy.” He said he pocketed the Skittles, still not sure anything was wrong.
Michael said the administrator asked to see the contents of his pockets. At that moment, Michael said he realized he was in trouble.
Having done time in high school in the dazed-and-confused late 70's, I'm finding this story particularly hilarious.

Exactly. It's probably no crime to sell condoms at school.
In our district, the Art club sells donuts after school on a regular basis.
Course, this is the district that has Christmas presentations, the teachers carry pocket knives, some teachers and students are rumored to have guns in their vehicles on school property, some teachers have been known to have firecrackers on school grounds, and lit them.
None of this kind of idiocy here.
I guess small and rural is still best.
Heck they might even cheer the kids if they shared them - you know ... having safe sex ... sharing them with others that are unprepared as they all attend the orgy with the teacher. It’s sick out there.
You’d think the principal had bigger fish to fry, like figuring out why kids aren’t getting educated or what to do about incompetent teachers.
