(03-07) 13:37 PST SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promised today to ensure that parents have the right to homeschool their children, after a state appeals court ruling severely restricted the practice in California.
"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children," the governor said in a statement. "Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."
An estimated 166,000 children are homeschooled across the state.
The ruling by the Second District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles said all children ages 6 to 18 must attend public or private school full-time until graduation from high school or be tutored at home by a credentialed teacher.
The Southern California case stemmed from a child welfare dispute involving the children of Phillip and Mary Long of Lynwood (Los Angeles County). The couple's eight children have been home-schooled by Mary Long, who holds no teaching credential. The children were also enrolled in a private school through an independent study program, which included quarterly home visits. Although the case did not involve the question of the children's truancy, the court decision broadly addressed the legality of homeschooling in California while specifically ruling that the Long family's situation violated state law.

knowledge and intelligence, the Legislature, over the years, enacted a series of laws.
A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good
citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation as a means of protecting
the public welfare. [Citation.] The Supreme Court of the United States, in the case of
Pierce v. Society of Sisters, 268 U.S. 510 [45 S.Ct. 571, 69 L.Ed. 1070, 39 A.L.R. 468],
held that: ‘No question is raised concerning the power of the state reasonably to regulate
all schools, to inspect, supervise and examine them, their teachers and pupils; to require
that all children of proper age attend some school, that teachers shall be of good moral
character and patriotic disposition, that certain studies plainly essential to good
citizenship must be taught, and that nothing be taught which is manifestly inimical to
the public welfare.’ [¶] Included in the laws governing the educational program were
those regulating the attendance of children at school and the power of the state to
enforce compulsory education of children within the state at some school is beyond

Not all is lost, but we need to keep a close eye one this. It is a prime example to how liberals are determined to dictate how each and every one of us should live out lives.
This is nothing more than the commie Teachers Union to take control. When more parents figure out that their kids are better off being home schooled, the teachers union get worried about their jobs. The sheeples need to rise up.....alas, but they won’t.

High numbers for the homeschooled in CA. ANY politician would HAVE TO pay heed.
Private school teachers are often not credentialed. I don’t know if there’s any data out there showing that credentialed teachers are more effective than non-credentialed ones.

Oh they have their army of law enforcement officers and state officials to enforce it.
It not very often that I do it, but Schwarzenegger gets my approval if he follows through on this.

It is none of your, or the State's business of what I know or don't know and what I teach or don't teach my kids.
The “absence of half day or more” of attendance rule is also stupid: I’m not a homeschooler but I fully support them (and I know several), and I know that with the one-on-one tutoring they do that they are often done with a whole day’s schoolwork in less than half a day.
Arnie was givin’ the gubmint schoolers what they wanted and now he’s trying to do the same for the homeschoolers. I think it’s wise; he knows the two ‘views’ will never meet or ‘work together’-—whatever he means by his statement it makes sense on all levels, and is very heartening/
Agree! Best way is by mentoring. That usually means spending time (1 on 1) with someone that is more experienced in the field being mentored.
When was the last time you were in a room full of 20 or more people the same age as you?

This is only good as long as we hold U.S. law as supreme. There is a move in the courts to allow International law to be supreme.

If government teachers were given the GED exam for high school dropouts this Monday, I wonder how many would be able to pass it?
