America's shame 1: Video captures grinning U.S. Marine throwing yelping puppy off cliff in Iraq
Last updated at 13:49pm on 4th March 2008
The U.S. military are investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.
The video gained widespread attention and condemnation after appearing on the web site YouTube, where it has been viewed over 8,000 times.
The footage shows two Marines, in combat gear and smiling, as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck.

The small dog seems to be about eight weeks old and is motionless as it is held.
"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.
"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.
The Marine holding the puppy then turns and hurls the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below.
The puppy can be heard yelping in terror until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.
"That's mean," one Marine says after, in a sickening understatement.
"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," a spokesperson revealed.
Marine spokesman Major Chris Perrine believed the culprit is based in Hawaii.
"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," he said.
The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawaii Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.
Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honourable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."
"There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children," said Major Chris Perrine.
"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

And we know it is alive how? Just from what I've seen over the years, puppies do go motionless when picked up by the scruff of the neck -- which is the way the mother would pick them up. I didn't see anything in the video that leads me to believe the puppy was already dead. This should at least be investigated (I would do so first simply because it is bad PR to have Marines throwing puppies off of cliffs -- it's not something that should be excused or justified). If not fake, the act is disgusting and these Marines should get more than just a slap on the wrist.

Everyone who has ever been responsible for the death of another being please report to the nearest cliff. All those who have not can pick up their halo in the mess hall where donut holes and Kool-Aid will be served. "Hi. Welcome to the mess hall. Halo? heh heh No, he meant HALO, as in 'high altitude low opening' parachute drop. heh heh We're all out of parachutes but grab a donut hole and some Kool-Aid and these guys will get you loaded up for the drop. heh heh. You never hurt another living thing eh? heh heh, that's a good one. Don't you guys think that's a good one?"
Wow! That is some meaningless drivel.

It contains a supposed "confession".
Here's the thing...I went to the guys alleged profile the prvious night and it had been delelted. So where did this supposed confession come from?
Now I'm even more suspicious and thinking it is indeed a hoax.

I want to clear somethings up before tomarrow. This might be hard to believe but I am sorry about the dog. At the time I just really didn't care. When you are constantly under fire sometimes people develope a different sence of humor than what others are used to. That video was from over a year ago and i dont know who put it out there but it wasn't me. It has been a real hard day. I don't know how they got my information but someone got all my information and i had to disconnect my parents and my womans phone. not to mention i had to redo my myspace because it got hacked. I just want this to end.

===========================================================
United States Defense Leaders and Marine Corps:
Thank you for addressing the Marines recently videotaped taunting a
defenseless puppy. I urge you to aggressively investigate this crime and
take prompt punitive action.
As you know, a man identified as David Motari dangles a black and white dog
by the scruff of the neck, cooing: "Cute little puppy." Another unnamed
soldier baby-talks: "Ah, so cute, so cute...little puppy." To the horror of
global Internet viewers, Motari then hurls the animal over a cliff into a
rocky gulch. The dog, who looks about 12 weeks old, squeals while flying
through the air. We hear a thud below, signifying the dog's certain death.
"That was mean Motari," the unknown Marine jokes. Motari shrugs and grins.
The question is not WHO the victim is, but WHAT is done to him or her.
Criminologists view the brutality of an act, regardless of the victim's
identity, as a precursor to future violence. Animal cruelty is a key trait
in the American Psychiatric Association's criterion for conduct disorders.
David Motari displays characteristics associated with sociopaths.
I respectfully ask the Military Police Department of Hawaii, where Motari is
stationed, to conduct a thorough probe. If Motari and other suspects are
apprehended, please advocate maximum penalties for aggravated cruelty and
intentional killing of a companion animal. Certainly, Motari and his
accomplice ought to undergo psychological counseling.
This is not the first video leak of soldiers tormenting animals in Iraq. I
hope this case prompts Defense Department officials to make regulatory
changes for animals in war zones. Specifically, I encourage the DOD to:
* Insert an anti-cruelty clause in the Universal Code of Military Justice.
* Utilize non-lethal vaccination to cope with rabies in war zones.
* Permit soldiers to bring vetted pets back to the U.S. with them.
The men in the video do not represent other brave men and women who serve
our country. This is all the more reason to pursue rigorous judicial action
against the few who sully America's moral repute.
Thank you for holding animal abusers accountable for their violent crimes.
Sincerely,

I don’t think it’s fake. I’ve read the arguments about whether it’s fake or not... one of them saying that the pup doesn’t move. But in the first second of the video, you can see the dog lick its upper lip. It is limp because that is the natural instinct of a puppy when held by the scruff of the neck.
Second, it does make a “thud” sound when it hit the ground... I don’t think a stuffed animal would have done that.
That being said... this should not reflect on the Corps, and those left-wing kooks are just using this to promote their idiotic anti-war agenda.
To: MeanGreen2008
I dont think its fake either. And shouldn't reflect on the whole US military. If these guys found time to play puppy killer, they should’ve be spending more time at the front.
