The U.S. military are investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.
The video gained widespread attention and condemnation after appearing on the web site YouTube, where it has been viewed over 8,000 times.
The footage shows two Marines, in combat gear and smiling, as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck.

The small dog seems to be about eight weeks old and is motionless as it is held.
"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.
"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.
The Marine holding the puppy then turns and hurls the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below.
The puppy can be heard yelping in terror until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.
"That's mean," one Marine says after, in a sickening understatement.
"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," a spokesperson revealed.
Marine spokesman Major Chris Perrine believed the culprit is based in Hawaii.
"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," he said.
The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawaii Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.
Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honourable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."
"There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children," said Major Chris Perrine.
"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."
Even if that was the case, what sort of humor and judgement does that show?
People will use that to paint the entire military as puppy killers.
Stupid beyond belief. A price needs to be paid EITHER WAY.
After reading more of this thread it sounds like some guys who used very bad judgment trying to make a joke with a dead dog or a doll or something.
Again, I don't care to see it myself...
WAKE UP!
People who treat animals is such a way have othen move on to humans.
Part of the profile of a serial killer is someone who tortures animals.
They are innocent until proven guilty. They have earned that in my book no matter what they are accused of.
“How many purebred sheepdog puppies are hanging around in Iraq”
TRUE, many of the stray dogs in Iraq are mean and hang around looking for what’s left of dead terorists. They are mangy and have an attitude.
Don't you know that those who sit in warm, safe homes and bang on keyboards all day are actually intellectually and morally superior to the rest of us??
They have the enviable ability to make snap judgments and swiftly condemn two individuals, purportedly risking their lives daily in a WAR ZONE, portrayed in a mere few seconds of video and through a few lines of agenda-driven and unaccountable editorial comment. Truly a wondrous skill.
And if you should happen to challenge them, or perhaps have a little different perspective, well...obviously you are on the brink of psychosis since you clearly hate puppies. Apparently these days your value in life is determined by how cute and cuddly you are.
Re: I am saying that the brutality of war has different effects on different people.
And if this is the outcome, they should no longer be wearing the uniform. Period.
It's all too convenient and a bit too "Hollywood"!
Snopes: Status: Undetermined "Consensus seems to be the video was staged..."
“It was a dumb thing to do. Not a horrible crime. It looks like the dog is already dead. So a sick joke came out of it.
That place is a hellhole.
I give them the benefot of the doubt.
Gonna have to be really sick before I criticize our troops.
A Mei Lie incident for example.”
Whether this video is fake or not, I do not know. Whether the dog is dead or not I do not know.
What I do know is that there is NO room for sympathy/exccuses for anyone (Marines included) to kill innocence or desecrate the body of once living creature.
Sorry, I may have a soft spot for dogs, but as any dog owner can verify. Dogs ARE God’s perfect creatures. They provide nothing but unconditional love and really are examples to all of us as to how we treat our own neighbors/families and even strangers.
ANYONE that harms a dog should be shunned by civilized society.

Sorry. Your analogy simply won’t fly.
These two were not in a heated battle of Fallujah. They were tossing puppies over a cliff for the fun of it.
Don’t defend the indefensible.
But I'm not sure the puppy was already dead, since at the very beginning I could see it move it's little mouth. But it might "feel better" to assume the puppy was already dead...to those who can't accept how totally depraved this act was.
The "yelping" came from a distance..NOT close up. Perfectly timed with the impact.

“However, they way people are reacting here implies that FR wants to start equating animal life with human life, and by doing that would be sickening.”
You’re right - they’re not equal.
If I were given the choice between saving a puppy, or the life of someone who’s about to kill it, I’d pick the dog.
Couldn’t agree more. And this applies both in and out of war zones, for some here who want to find excuses.
Young warriors do strange things at times. Fake or no fake just somthing he will regret as he ages. Soldiers are not out there to be kindergarden teachers.
While everyone is boo hooing about a dog, in the meantime, another 4,000 babies have been sucked out of their wombs...
Will be curious to see follow-up.
So no cases of animal cruelty can be brought until abortions everywhere are stopped?
Ludicrous logic, for lack of a better word.
Please don't mess with puppies.
Still trying to figure out who killed Buddy?
