Hume to Conservatives: Get Off McCain's Back
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Brit Hume has some blunt advice for conservative Republicans: lay off McCain if you don't want a Dem president.

At the very end of today's Fox News Sunday panel segment, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol was first to make a point along similar lines.

BILL KRISTOL: I'm more conservative than John McCain but I think it would be a mistake for him to just make himself into an orthodox conservative in this election. The reason he is a stronger candidate than a lot of other Republicans would be is that he is a little bit heterodox. He's got his own views, he shouldn't back off on that, I think, actually.

Hume drove the point home in spades.

BRIT HUME: And if the conservatives don't want a President Obama or a President Clinton, they ought to get off McCain's back and let him campaign as whatever he wants to, and campaign from the center.

It falls on the party’s base to challenge their own candidate. Otherwise, we end up with an Obama-type, running on no substance.

“Getting off his back” is not an option.

Newsflash!

Taking action that places either Hillary or Obama in the White House is the suicide move.

Get a clue!

You can follow McCain, if you like, but I'm through following RINOs. I've decided to clean the GOP's house of liberals first.

If you want a phony democrat over a real democrat, go ahead.
But I want the in liberals our party ... destroyed!!!

“So rather than offer a logical argument to counter the reality that McCain is a liberal RINO, you just resort to attack and pitch a hissy fit.”
__________________________________________________________

No, “attack and pitch a hissy fit” is what you do.

Maybe you’re just having trouble keeping up with all the posts that you take exception to. Let me help you.

It started by a comment someone else made that “Whoever his (McCain’s) choice would be...it’ll be darn better than any Socialist leaning judge appointed by Obama or Hillary.”

To which you replied “You really think a liberal RINO @$$hat of that caliber is going to do anything but tap a Socialist-leaning judge? You’ve got some waking up to do, kiddo.”

Which let to my response to you that “As for ‘waking up’, perhaps you’re the one needing the ‘No-Doze’. Facts are stubborn things. Hillary & Obama voted AGAINST Roberts & Alito. McCain voted FOR them. He also said that Roberts & Alito are the kind of justices he would appoint to the Supreme Court.”

So... we can let others decide which of us offered “a logical argument” and which of us resorted to “ attack and pitch a hissy fit” as you certainly haven’t offered anything from which to value your judgement.

I'll express my anger any damned way I please, about McCain.
Is that soft enough for you?

> “Why would I attempt to show that Obama has ever done anything conservative. I NEVER said he did. Where are you getting this absurd notion from?

You are arguing with a ghost - not me.”
__________________________________________________________

You seem to be having trouble keeping track of the conversation. Let me help you.

It started in a post I made to ‘Moolah’ in which I stated “Thanks Moolah for bringing some sanity to this thread. It seems that many who disagree w/ Kristol and Hume’s assessment have not been paying attention to Obama’s socialist agenda.”

Although my comment was made to someone else, yout decided to provide your two cents worth in post #113:
>Like heck! We’ve been paying attention. We’ve also been paying attention to McCain’s swing towards the left on so many issues. Are we supposed to ignore that?”

To which I replied in post #198: “I haven’t suggested that you ignore anything. However, if you have been paying attention you would see many differences between Obama & McCain.

1. Obama & Clinton both want to repeal the Bush tax cuts.

2. Obama & Clinton both opposed Roberts & Alito as Supreme Court justices.

3. Obama & Clinton both want government controlled health care.

4. Obama & Clinton both oppose building a fence along our border. You, like I, don’t like McCain’s position on immigration, but Obama & Clinton are even worse.

If you want more, go look at Obama’s 100% liberal voting record.

Now, perhaps you can give me one example of where Obama is more conservative than McCain.”

To my challenge that you “give me one example of where Obama is more conservative than McCain” you replied in post #228: > “Huh? That’s laughable.

> This argument that we have to accept McCain as is is also laughable.
> If he wants to be president then he should make promises that APPEAL to the GOP base.
> Instead he’s going after the “blowin’ in the wind” base.

> Does he just want his portrait on the wall of the White House or does he really want to lead from a conservative point of view?

So in post #281 I replied: “281
I provided a list of various ways in which McCain is more conservative than Obama and simply asked that you provide one in which Obama was more conservative.

Not only did you fail to mention a single vote, policy or position (or anything else for that matter) that could support your argument, you distorted my post by claiming “This argument that we have to accept McCain as is is also laughable”.

I made no argument that we have to accept McCain. I simply asked you to provide one fact that might support your argument.

Your response shows that you have no sustainable argument, only the same old complaints against McCain that you repeat over and over again. Perhaps you don’t relize how lame that appears.”
__________

So... rabbr, I now say to you that if you can’t keep up with the conversation, you could at least show a little class rather than to blame your failure on the other person.

Get a clue yourself. Voting in McCain assures the leftward move of the GOP for the forseeable future. You want to be a party to that? Why don't you switch parties like your buddy McCain almost did in 2001?

I swear...you liberal RINO supporters would demand we vote for Hillary if she got an 'R' by her name!

McCain, I’m sure, is grateful to his good friends in Mississippi for electing the cosponsor of the McCain-Feingold-Cochran Campaign Finance Reform Act. There must be a lot of liberals in Mississippi.

That's why it's important to vote in the primary.

But again, I'm through supporting RINOs.

McCain needs to show us why he would make a good POTUS. He has not convinced me yet. I am hoping he will “reach out” to conservatives before November. No, he does not have to agree with me 100%. I was for Thompson even though he was not perfect (from my point of view).

Not sure what post you are replying to. In #360 I defended McCain (sort of), for voting for Ginsberg.

do you think hillary or obama will build a fence? Discourage immigration illegal or otherwise, do you think they will take action to stop this illegal immigration business once and for all?

Just asking.

>>do you think hillary or obama will build a fence? Discourage immigration illegal or otherwise, do you think they will take action to stop this illegal immigration business once and for all?

I would guess no.

But this disturbs me about McCain: Last year Hillary and Obama were voting for McCain’s amnesty (including gang members), but they weren’t the leaders on the stage pushing it. McCain and Kennedy were. It’s possible that McCain would be better than the Dems on immigration (if so he really needs to speak up), but from my point of view I can’t believe anyone would vote for any of the three.

So, I think what you are getting at is, if I think all 3 will sell us out on immigration, isn’t McCain better on defense? The answer is yes, but I also believe that McCain’s 2007 amnesty plan would allow Dems complete control in a few years. So I am hoping we will get a clearer picture of what McCain would do, and that we could live with it, before November.

On the other hand, there is a youtube video of Obama saying, “I will slow our development of future combat systems.” It’s not clear when this video was made, but he hasn’t been running for POTUS that long. Obama is doing a pretty good job discouraging sane people from voting for himself.
