Brit Hume has some blunt advice for conservative Republicans: lay off McCain if you don't want a Dem president.
At the very end of today's Fox News Sunday panel segment, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol was first to make a point along similar lines.
BILL KRISTOL: I'm more conservative than John McCain but I think it would be a mistake for him to just make himself into an orthodox conservative in this election. The reason he is a stronger candidate than a lot of other Republicans would be is that he is a little bit heterodox. He's got his own views, he shouldn't back off on that, I think, actually.
Hume drove the point home in spades.
BRIT HUME: And if the conservatives don't want a President Obama or a President Clinton, they ought to get off McCain's back and let him campaign as whatever he wants to, and campaign from the center.

Your post is such a sad portrayal of what the Republican party has become, it makes me angry.
We’ll settle for scraps, imaginary scraps, at that!
Where’s the anger? Where’s the will? Where’s that “we can do it” attitude? Where is America going?
The liberal media is always taking statements made by conservatives/ Republicans out of context rather than report what was actually said. That's how they fool people that don't pay attention. I'm sure that was not your intention.
To date it looks as if McCain has the nomination. The other two choices are Hillary or Obama, that was my understanding of what Brit said.
If you think I got the wrong impression from Hume's statement please feel free to correct me.
Frankly I cannot find fault with Brit, although I hope his assessment that the dem primary won’t be over on March 4th isn’t due to internals telling him what we’re not hearing.
NO... but the reverse is true... Let Obama have it and you will reap a generation worth of Liberal procedures, government growth and loss of freedom that you will never recover.. too many here think oh he’ll be like Carter... LOL that is too funny... The Progressives have a serious agenda and it is polar opposite what you want ... .that is if you are a real Conservative and not just a principled talker... True Conservatives will realize the error of cutting off their nose to spite their face and will vote appropriately. Remember you choose your government either by your vote or lack of ..
Given mccains voting record on judges and the statements he has made, "But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because 'he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.'"
There is a huge difference in stating you will not support McCain and stating that You will vote against him.
One means you are a ideological conservative that is extremely principled in opinion.
The other means you are an ignorant fool.
No, but I am convinced that McCain is!
Forgot to answer that question.
Britt is correct, but that won’t penetrate the thick skulls of the kamakaze conservatives, who seem to think they can win by losing. That’s not how the real world works.
That is a good one, a man who with his friend Ted Kennedy wanted to give amnesty to twenty million illegals and pardons to 600,000 plus convicted felons among those illegals. Having no ideal who are where the illegals came from and you think he could be trusted to protect the country. What kind of cool-aide are you drinking.
I haven’t forgotten how the media ... including FBC shoved McCain down our throats since this election started
Never thought I’d say this ... but, shove it Brit
but not for thee.
For you my contempt and contumely,
for you are not me
I am me.
John McCain.
grrrr ... that should read FNC not FBC
A lot of people could care less where the country is going. To them the most important part is whether the liberal has a "d" are a lttle "r" by his name.
C’mon everyone, WE are not a bunch of liberal weenies!
Let’s start calling, faxing, and letter writing the RNC demanding a better candidate. Let’s let them know where we stand.
Like they have in congress for the past year? Yeah, they talk, and they promise, and they threaten, but guess what — they haven’t been that successful. And it’s not because of Bush vetoing what they passed. They could pass much of their agenda even when they were in charge.
You are a fearmonger and a hack or you are just scared. Either way, you aren’t winning support for your side.
McCainiacs keep reminding us of two things:
1 - That McCain is the front runner and probable nominee because he won primary elections, not because he was appointed by the RNC and party hacks.
2 - That he won the primary elections by attracting liberal crossovers and independents and without the help of conservatives.
Then they call us names because we are not jumping on the McCain garbage scow.
They say “We don’t need you narrow minded conservatives but you better vote for “Conservative Liberal” (McCain’s own words) John McCain or the world will end.”
McCain is heterodox.
Fall in line, drink the koolaid & shut up... oh, and calm down. (sounds like sheeple command to me)
Yes, this is going to outrage the “Let’s lose one for the Gipper!” crowd.
They cannot do away with the election of a president by "Electors" and change it to popular vote without a constitutional ammendment.
It is left up to the states how to chose the electors.
Today, Electors are chosen by popular election, but the Constitution does not mandate a popular election.
Article 2 - The Executive Branch
Section 1 - The President
The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice-President chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows:
Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.
Amendment 12 - Choosing the President, Vice-President
The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate;
The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;
