Hume to Conservatives: Get Off McCain's Back
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 03/02/2008 7:39:36 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Brit Hume has some blunt advice for conservative Republicans: lay off McCain if you don't want a Dem president.

At the very end of today's Fox News Sunday panel segment, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol was first to make a point along similar lines.

BILL KRISTOL: I'm more conservative than John McCain but I think it would be a mistake for him to just make himself into an orthodox conservative in this election. The reason he is a stronger candidate than a lot of other Republicans would be is that he is a little bit heterodox. He's got his own views, he shouldn't back off on that, I think, actually.

Hume drove the point home in spades.

BRIT HUME: And if the conservatives don't want a President Obama or a President Clinton, they ought to get off McCain's back and let him campaign as whatever he wants to, and campaign from the center.

Furthermore...We Conservatives did not vote for this abomination of a candidate. DIRTY FILTHY POLITICS is what happened here, and I, for ONE, am not going to go along with it anymore!!!

Surrounded by the enemy hordes, the leader of the enemy is in the sights, and there is only one bullet left to use (your individual vote).

So, do you aim at their leader and squeeze off your last round?

Do you aim into the center of the enemy formation and use the last round?

Or do you, as some here espouse, use that last round to turn onto your (not one hundred percent agreeable on all your views) own captain, and blow him away because he is not on "your" side?

What to do, what to do

Perhaps I will be persuaded to send a check to Obama, to teach the RNC a lesson. Yeah, that's the ticket. That will surely advance the conservative message to the unwashed and the heathens.

“He would nominate pro-life justices”

1. You have absolutely NO proof of that.

Look at his track record. Of course there's no guarantees -- I mean we got Sandra Day O'Connor with Reagan. But I have a feeling we'd like McCain's SC picks better than Hillary's or Obama's.

If the idea is to have the country go to hell for the next 15-20 years, then I'd be voting for Obama or Hillary, so that we conservatives can win again when FOX News celebrates its 30th year on the air.

McCain’s so-called supporters like Hume and Kristol are his worst enemies. These self-important pompous fools insist on rubbing salt into conservative wounds and making any reconciliation as difficult as possible.

I agree totally with all of your thoughts but one.....

McCain will not win. Look at the donations and turnout for the Democrats. Forget the polls, they only call registered Dems and R’s or Indies. There are voters coming out this time that this country has not seen in it’s history, and they are swooning over Obama. It’s as plain as paper.

Quinnipiac and several other study groups also point that out. This will be a Democrat landslide.....Like we have not seen in many decades.

Because all the self-proclaimed True Believers here are more concerned with maintaining a purist ideology than keeping the country afloat.

These myopic individuals do not understand that Reagan espoused the same border policies as McCain does, (not that I agreed with Ronalus Magnus on that issue then, either), but also ended the cold war and drove the USSR into bankruptcy.

They forget also that the world changed on 9/11. The threat we face now is one I'd trust McCain to deal with better than Fred or Ethel. Do you really want Hussein or Hitlery answering that 3AM phone call?

This is not surprising at all. Fox news has been sliding to the left for a long time now. I guess now that Fox has the ratings they wanted they don’t need us anymore. I don’t need them either.

>>I never knew that Conservatism meant Deporting Illegal aliens and putting a thousand foot high fence on the southern border.

However, I did know that it meant

1. Strong Support of national Defense. (The Military)
2. Strong Support of Family Values. (Life/marriage)
3. Strong Support of the Republic (constitutionalists)
4. Personal Responsibility no Nanny States.
5. Keeping Taxes low no excess gubmint spending.<<

I will never vote for Obama or Hillary. But McCain’s amnesty bill last year would, in a couple of decades, guarantee Dem control forever, and would not have secured the border as promised. He says he will secure the border, but so do Obama and Hillary. I am hoping that McCain will give us some kind of sign, before November, that he would not sell us out in 2009 as he tried to do in 2007.

I think Obama is going to beat Hillary, so McCain will be up against a messianic pop star, with the war in Iraq as his key issue. Some of Hillary’s voters will go to McCain, but most will continue the pattern and go to McCain. McCain has done everything in his power to define himself as a new Republican, one who doesn’t need the conservative base. The demographics they are a changing, and without the enthusiasm of the broken glass Republicans, Obama is going to hand McCain his head. Hume and Kristol see it.

I think McCain might end up as Obama’s Secretary of Defense.

My sentiments exactly. What really steams me is the attitude of these appeasers here that seems to be if you don’t agree with their fatalist choice of McCain, somehow WE are expected to move the the Montana wilderness or something if THEY, like spoiled children, don’t get THEIR way. McCain wouldn’t win even if all the conservatives were behind him.

Obama will make such a joke out of his Presidency that he will make Carter look like Abraham Lincoln.

There simply is not enough money in the entire treasury to cover all of his hand-outs. Not to mention that there will be a Conservative revival in the legislature that will make his job a nightmare.

There are still logical, thinking people behind this country in very large numbers. It will be much like it was during the Carter/Clinton years and we will establish a majority best under those circumstances. It is a new beginning, not doom and gloom if we lose.

I wonder just how many conservatives will slap a McCain/another RINO VP choice bumper ticker on the back of their car? Or put a sign up for this fool? Or work phone banks to get out votes? Or more importantly give money?

Probably the same number that don't want to gamble away what Freedoms we still have -

that don't want to see the Electoral College ended, negating the votes from fy-over country...

the ones that realize what will happen if 3-4 more uber justices of the SCOTUS are appointed...

that don't want all those empty federal judgeships that the libs refuse to let be filled, be filled with more activist judges...

probably as many as don't want to live under totalitarian rule

The real danger of John McCain is shown in every post proclaiming him to be better that the democrats simply because he’s a republican. They couldn’t care less how liberal he is because he’s a “Magic RINO” (Maybe I should send that to Rush)

On every piece of liberal legislation he wants he’ll have the backing of every democrat AND RINO in Washington.

I hope you are wrong. I just get the sense that the “Obama Love Fest” is not all that the MSM has it cracked up to be.

Plus, he’s got stuff in the closet that hasn’t reared it’s head yet.

Are you sitting in an underground bunker, hiding under the covers as you type?

The things that you suggest will not happen so easily or so quickly, if at all.

Take a deep breath and relax.

Yes my FRiend, there IS strength in numbers. And there are record numbers of us who see it this way, this time around. That fact cannot be denied.

McCain has not been named “captain” yet, but suppose he was the official nominee of the Republican Party. The problem is that the “not one hundred percent agreeable on all your views” is because he has publicly stated that he will sign an agreement that millions of invaders already in our country will stay here. These invaders, once they have enough votes, will elect the enemy.

I won’t vote for Obama or Hillary, but I won’t shut up either.

I WILL vote AGAINST McCain!!!

A person sure in their convictions has no need to shout.

or, as the proverb Ayn Rand quoted, states:

"If you lose your temper, you've lost your argument."

Liberals just don’t care. They have already buried countless jabs at “He Who Walks on Water”. (The Gay Limo caper for one.)

WE are dealing with the party of amoral values. If anything, any scandals would be a plus in his favor, like they were for BJ.

And I think McCain knows it. That’s why I can’t help but wonder what’s really going on in the circles of politics and governance to which we are not privvy.
