California exodus turns to stampede

WASHINGTON – California, which once lured Americans from near and far, is now driving out millions of the most productive residents – including high percentages of the most affluent.

"When California faced a Mount Everest-sized $14 billion deficit in 2003, one of the major causes for the red ink was the stampede of millionaire households from the state," says a report called "Rich States, Poor States" by economists Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore. "Out of the 25,000 or so seven-figure-income families, more than 5,000 left in the early 2000s, and the loss of their tax payments accounted for about half the budget hole."

And it's not just the rich leaving.

Based on data from moving companies, California had the second-highest domestic population out-flow of any state in 2005, according to the report, "despite the beautiful weather, beaches, and mountains."

The bad news for California is that it faces $14 billion deficit this year, despite boasting one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.

The report, published by the American Legislative Exchange Council shows jobs are not just leaving the country – they are moving from state to state, with the population following.

"States are in direct competition with each other for human capital and business investment. State governments that think they can attract jobs and people, and grow their economies, by taxing their citizens at a higher rate than their neighbors are sadly mistaken," said Democratic Arkansas state Sen. Steve Faris, ALEC's 2008 national chairman. "Legislators should take a close look at where their state ranks in this book and use it as a tool to help them improve."

Trouble is, California is no different than the U.S. government situation. There is no political will to balance the U.S budget. The federal, state and personal debt levels are so high, an economic crisis lasting several years will take place to currect the imbalances. And it won’t be pretty.

Appears to be a blue state problem.

Looking at the map, other than destination resort N. Dakota, the depopulating states are all very liberal.

Yep, we had one move from CA to the panhandle. Then he sued the city where he had moved because they prayed at a ballgame and his little girl, an atheist, felt left out and said people looked at her funny! And when interviewed he actually said “I thought this was a free country!” It truly is a mental disease!

exactly

the libs have ruined their north eastern states like massachusetts and NY so they move to here Florida, they headed to south florida but now they have ruined that part and are now heading here to northern florida thus bringing their ignorant votes with them , the same votes and party what ruined where they used to live

and then they say southerners are thick.

you would think that these rich CA’s would stop voting for the dems and vote for the party which made their new state great i.e. republicans

ironic that it’s dem states they are leaving and heading for republican states and yet they still want to vote for the dems out of ignorance.
In a few years their new state will be ruioned and then they will move on again to ruin another state and wonder why the state is ruined

I ma in northern florida a conservative republican place, the libs are now moving here and guarantee they are bringing their liberal votes with them and their votes for the dems, yet they cannot understand it was them and their votes what ruined their state

correct, the northeasterners have ruined south florida and now are heading to me in northern florida

we should have a sign saying you are entering a republican area, here we have low taxes, tough on crime, gunlaws to protect you, etc etc remember where you left and how you voted and if you do intend to keep voting the way you ruined your state then turn around at the next exit and never come back

“When enough good people, who love right and hate wrong, leave Kali, who will be left and what kind of self-consuming society will they sustain?”

Ever been to Mexico City ? La Raza will be the defacto “winner” when all the good people have left CA.

Tax the rich, I say! It is working so well in California, it should be done everywhere.

California — a wonderful state to leave.

But one nice thing about people from New Jersey is that when we move to a new state, we do not feel compelled to re-create the pathologies of New Jersey everywhere we go.

The thing is, California was ruined by marxist east coasters who moved there 40 or so years ago. Look at the history of the polititians and where they came from.

I have a question about your collected data source at Areaconnect.com.

Is the 'Los Angeles' you're using in your comparisons counting 'Los Angeles' the actual named city or does it count the entire greater LA Basin, including Simi Valley and outlying places like Woodland Hills all the way to Long Beach and Pomona?

I ask because 'Long Beach' has it's own unique data pile. So does Pomona, and Culver City, and Compton, and Hawthorne, and Beverly Hills, and Inglewood, and so on. To me, all of those together are 'Los Angeles'.

If those areas are not being counted in your data, that would mean that you're only showing data from the downtown area of Los Angeles City *proper* and a tiny part of East Los Angeles that have the ZIP code they commonly share -- typically nothing but a financial business district that people commute to for a day's work and then leave for their homes in the greater LA area when the workday concludes. Do you really think that 'Los Angeles City' a skyscraper field that has almost no residential zoning to it and is almost empty of people after work hours is a fair comparison?

I just did some random comparisons against 'Los Angeles' and some places I know are sleepy Western US cities and using your comparison it falsely appears that 'Los Angeles' is as safe and peaceful as Tyrolian Austria.

You know, gosh sakes, you wouldn't be trying to pull a fast one on all the people here, would you? :)

I say this as a former decade-long resident of West Los Angeles proper and a suburbanite resident of the greater LA area who spent half of my life there.

I’m from Missouri but I got stationed in Ft. Worth, Texas. I like it so much, I’m getting out of the military and staying here to go to college. Can’t complain too much about Texas. It would be nice if automobile companies installed blinkers on their product though...

I am a registered Democrat because I registered to vote long ago here in NW FL many years ago. In those days one had to be a Democrat in order to have any say in local elections which were all decided in the Primary because Republicans didn’t bother to run. Now the situation is about 2/3 reversed but I am still a nominal Democrat. In Graham’s time as governor it was good to be able to write to his office and start my letter with “As a registered Democrat...” There is really no reason to change that now. I actually voted for a Democrat who was far the better man for school superintendent one year and I sent the Party $5 so I get to go to the barbecue in election year. The Republican party doesn’t do barbecues. Many of the outlanders who come here are Canadians and they don’t vote or give a damn about local conditions so long as they can get their necessary medical work done while they are here.

not usre if you are joking here but

so you vote for a party which wants my taxes raised, not ot have the right to protect myself, i.e. the castle law, wants me to wear a helmet though I do but I don’t need a law telling me etc etc but you’ll stay and keep voting for them because they have a barbecue

A few years ago I was in California, we went to a movie and the ticket was $10.25 (each)! Had I known I would not have gone, but apparently many folks are willing to pay that price.

I don’t go to Denver, or LA either. We have crime here enough but it tends to be family killings and we get break-in rashes that end sometimes when the B&E artist gets shot in someone’s livingroom. Then they stop for a long time. Drugs upset the community pretty badly in the 70s with drive-bys and the whole kit but the local sheriffs got a pretty good handle on it by 96 or so and it perks along at a low level now.

I said I am a </i>registered</i> Democrat. I voted for a nominally Democrat School Supe once because the Republican was a jerk. The Democrat is still Supe and does a good job, including resisting NEA and more Federal money. Otherwise I have voted pretty solidly Republican. I have wavered this year because McCain is hard to take but decided that electing him will put off the inevitable permanent Democrat sweep of Washington for perhaps 4 more years. If he would bang his head and see what he will do to the Country with Amnesty then he will be okay.
