I’m curious.
Do our planes make similar runs over Russian carriers?
Again, prevent it how? All during the cold war soviet aircraft were traditionally intercepted miles from the carrier and escorted while they were within X number of miles from the ship. It sounds like this is continuing. But short of shooting down the incoming airplane I have no idea how you would prevent it.
I can remember tales being told of times in the 60's where Bear bombers would paint U.S. units and the U.S. units would paint the bomber with their fire control radars in return. I remember one story where a Bear flew over a CVS with it's bomb bay door open and the CVS in turn was tracking the Bear with their 3 inch mounts and if so much as a box lunch had fallen from the Bear it would have been history. But treaties were signed which prohibit provocative actions like that, and to the best of my knowledge they're still being observed by both sides. The fact that the Bear intercepted the U.S. task force and overflew the carrier does not violate the treaties.
I agree. If a bomber was coming at me, at low altitude, and with no communications/warnings, I would have at least warned them, and fired warning shots. Had the bomber dropped any ordnance on the carrier, the aircraft carrier commander would be absolutely to blame. Now they know they can bomb our carriers and won’t be shot down prior. Hey, it’s great that the F-16’s are there, but unless they shoot the bombs, they can’t really do much about it.
I hope that we are doing the same, except that they don’t know we are because they can’t “see” us.
Yes it reaaly did. (I'm taking it that you meant it thus, it said it for me).
I regretted my decision to get out a couple of years later and then congratulated myself on making the right choice eight years after that.
Make that twelve instead of eight, my CRS is acting up today.
Jimmy Carter was not a better CINC than Ronald Wilson Reagan. The veteran versus civilian canard does not fly.
Knew a lot of folks who served during Mr. Peanut’s term and they usually refer to it as “The Dark Time.” Money for supplies, training, and maintenance was low.
Jorge is more concerned about Mexicos southern border, than our own.
The Soviets used to do that all the time in the 70s. They fly low over US ships just to take pictures of each other for morale/propaganda. The Navy got wise to it and started flying fighters right between them so that if they were taking pictures it would be ones of their bombers getting dogged by US fighters.

Precisely. These encroachers do not arrive unexpectedly. They are engaged many miles away.
These boys all have balls of solid brass and are at the wheel of some very powerful machines. Boys will be boys.
On the one hand I ascertain, that we have seen, how old Soviet bombers have valiantly consulted such modern ship as US Nimiz, and US aircraft has really overslept a strike.
On the other hand, it is a pity, such experiments divide Russia & US people into two camps and plunge into mistrust and aggression.
And still I advise to look, if who did not see, entertaining cinema:ZeitGeist, to understand to whom all this it is favourable.
What can we expect from Putin? He was raised in the USSR, educated in the USSR, joined the KGB, became head of the KGB in the USSR. He’s fought the Americans all of his life. He’s been at war with America all of his life. Today is no different to him than the years he lived in the USSR. Since the fall of the wall Russia is not “as large” and does not control as much territory as it did when it was the head of the USSR. Putin wants the world to realize, though he is President of Russia and not the Premier of Stalin’s time, Russia can still and will start trouble, if need be. My grandmother, a missionary, wrote in her diary, about 1919, that the Bear and the Eagle would one day have trouble with one another.
Instead, you could vote in all the local conservative politicians possible and, say, write in on the POTUS line if you really feel that way.
Just an idea...
No. I once flew within 500 ft and a quarter mile of the Kiev and they never saw us coming...The band was out on deck...and that was during the cold war.
In this case we were on them from 50 miles out, and knew they were coming much sooner. If they had opened a bombay door, they would have been warned, then smoked.
Give the commanders a break. This was just a training flight and a photo op. The Russian crews have nothing else to do to keep them from getting bored except drinking sterno.
Thanks for the history. We had a family friend in the USAF/Japan when we lived there in the 50s and early 60s. Not well known but quite a bit of Rooski watching was done from there.
See post #26 for tattle-tail info.

JeffHead, this really demonstrates and irrational ignorance on your part.
What are they going to do, shoot down Ivan during flyover in international airspace if he doesn't change course? They have standoff weapons that could hit us from far out. Does that mean you think we should splash them as soon as they are even within weapons range?
This was an exposition and empty saber rattling, and sounds like they were escorted on their merry way and WWIII did not begin on that day. A good day, IMHO.
Armchair Admirals here that are shocked, shocked by this have watched too much Star Trek and expect the captain to switch on the deflector shields.
In a hot war, the shock would be justified.
That it happens without incident is simply an indicator that we're not at war.
