The first question asked of the 1,000 conservative activists was: "In your opinion, is Senator John McCain a true conservative?"
The results: Yes 197 (19.7%) No 595 (59.5%) Undecided 208 (20.8%)

...but I thought the MSM has been telling us that A. McCain doesn’t need conservatives to win and B. McCain is the most conservative guy....Surely they wouldn’t lie????
It’s over. We need to start planning for 2012. There will be a Democrat Congress and White House and a Democrat majority on the Supreme Court.
They are bound to screw things up so bad that we will have a road back.
Start planning now.
No to RINO McPain. He’s another Bob Dole.
Why? 2012 is suppose to be the end of the world.
No it isn’t over.
We need to WIN CONGRESS NOW - or at least hold on to what we’ve got!
There is no chance of having a reasonably conservative President. It is over.
But Congress has a great deal of power. If we can hold on to what we’ve got, and let Hillary/Obama become a focal point for the conservative opposition, we can ADVANCE conservative ideals.
The buffoonery that follows will remind Americans of the dangers of liberalism, and groom a new generation of conservative leaders.
Waiting for 2012 is not an option. We need to go on offense, and the only avenue left to us is Congress. It is time to stop whining and start fighting for the one area where we are still capable of affecting.
279 27.9% "I will vote for McCain, but do not expect to work or contribute"
35 3.5% "I will vote for the Democratic nominee"
90 9.0% "I will vote for a conservative third party candidate if one is on the ballot in my state"
40 4.0% "I will not vote"
257 25.7% "I am undecided at this time-I need to see if Senator McCain reaches out to conservatives in a serious and meaningful way"
Calling it a tough road is a bit of an understatement.
McCain, Obama and Hillary = the Bad, the Worse and the Ugly.
I really think the best thing for America is for conservatives to avoid voting for McCain, but to vote for every Republican congressional candidate.
Here are my reasons:
1) Id rather have Congressional Republicans united in opposing Hillary or Obama, than supporting McCain in his pursuit of equally wrong-headed policies.
2) Since not a one of the three knows anything about economics, or has any executive experience, I really think the odds are against whoever wins in 2008 winning a second term , and Id rather see a real Republican running against a Democrat than trying to mount a primary challenge against a failed incumbent McCain in 2012.
3) McCain has a slim chance of victory at best in November, and no chance at all if the conservatives stay home. I think if conservative non-support is perceived as the reason for his failure to win, the Republican Party will be very wary about about shafting us in the future, which I think will bode well for a real conservative candidate in 2012, and for our partys future.
4) I really believe that on the critical issues facing our nation the WOT, the economy, immigration and taxes, all three of the candidates will be equally wrong-headed.
5) I think the advantages to our beloved nation of helping McCain lose far outweigh the disadvantages of helping him win. If he does win, that will be the end of conservatives in the Republican party for the next four election cycles, because it will show that Republicans dont ever have to take conservatism seriously again. And I really do believe that conservatism is the only realistic hope that our nation has of surviving in the long run.
Dont tell me Im being petty. I am not even angry. But I really do believe it is best for our nation if conservatives ensure McCains loss in 08. (Hell probably lose anyway, especially against Obama.)
Flame away.
Agreed it’s over. This poll is misleadingly biased in favor of McCain. Note it is a poll of activists attending CPAC. These are folks biased towards action. More of them will support him for lack of anything else to do. More of them are going to go to the polls to actively vote, even if they do nothing else for him. More of them really are waiting to see if he “reaches out.”
There is another huge segment of conservatives, the non-activists who don’t go to CPAC but normally do contribute in small ways and go out and vote. This segment was not polled here, and they have just lost interest in politics until 2012. John McCain and, unfortunately, Republican Congressional candidates will not see them — or their dollars, efforts or votes — for years. This is a tidal wave about to wash over the Republican, I fear.
Start planning now.
Yes but if we get hosed bad enough with judges after 8 years of Hillary, it really might be too late. We need to cultivate strong committed energetic and attractive candidates. But we must also plan to fight against Hillary's liberal judicial appointments. Conservatives who might have been writing checks for a conservative presidential nominee in 2008 should should plan to "invest" in anyone who can, and will attempt to, limit Hillary's destructive appointments, until the movement recovers.
... and the true CONSERVATIVE base of the party continues to arise, loud and angry and clear!!! ;)
2010 comes first. But before that, we need to work our tails off to hold as many congressional seats as is possible.
“really think the best thing for America is for conservatives to avoid voting for McCain, but to vote for every Republican congressional candidate”
No flame, but having either obama or hillary CIC, is just stupid.

Not flaming—agreeing!!
Having a man who believes in terrorists’ rights and closing Guantanamo is just as dumb.
BTW, it’s McCain who i’m speaking of.
Sure it was...see my post above:
40 4.0% "I will not vote"
That percentage is so low only because they didn't poll the vast and powerful political pundits in the overwhelming majority here on FReeRepublic.
