The Verdict of Super Tuesday
National Review ^ | February 9, 2008 | Michael Barone

Well, Super Tuesday is over, and now we have two major party presidential nominees. That's the lead sentence I thought five weeks ago I'd be writing for this column. But the 33-day round of caucuses and primaries that seemed likely to produce decisions after 23 states voted on Super Tuesday have failed to deliver.

True, John McCain appears to have a relatively clear flight path to the Republican nomination. The invaluable realclearpolitics.com Website, as I write, credits him with 697 delegates to 244 for Mitt Romney and 187 for Mike Huckabee.

But the McCain aircraft can expect some turbulence before it gets its wheels down. Vocal conservatives, led by talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, insist that McCain isn't a proper conservative and isn't much of a Republican.

I will require a lie detector test!

To my mind, a major question one must ask oneself about any candidate being considered is "Might this person, if elected, turn out to be a Democrat mole." For Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney, I would say 'no', since they've both demonstrated that they can't stand significant aspects of what the Democrats stand for. But what reason is there to believe McCain couldn't be a Democrat mole?

Well he would be going up against the Clintons, and that's no easy task. But you think the American public will buy their stories hook line and sinker?

Nuked daisies won't be in the equation. It's too ....60s.

And what about your efforts?

Frankly, I read your posts, and I have the impression that you don't know which side you're really on.

I am a conservative who believes that John McCain is either a Democrat mole or--more likely--a Democrat puppet. My guess is that he's most likely a puppet who doesn't see himself as such, but rather as someone who shows initiative in trying to make deals with Democrats, without giving such deals any particular level of scrutiny. The Democrats know how to play McCain, and they would continue to play him if he got the White House.

I want Republicans to do as well in the House and Senate as they can. I refuse, however, to vote for a man who would totally destroy the GOP if he were somehow elected.

If you're afraid your house will get hit by burglars, does it make sense to hire a crooked security guard who will actively give everything away? If you don't, any burglars will at least have to go through the effort of carrying away their loot. But if you hire a crooked security guard, he'll save them the trouble and have it delivered.

OK. So basically, you see McCain as being treacherous, right?

I don't.

I don't see McCain folding like a tent in the WOT. At least he has his head screwed on right on that one.

I don't see McCain sacrificing his right to life views.

I don't see McCain selecting "living document" interpreters of the constitution to the Supreme Court. (We DO have six members who are over the age of 68.)

You're not going to get any of that from the Democrats.

Chiefly due to the fact that neither Hannity nor Limbaugh fell off the proverbial turnip truck yesterday, and can both readily recognize a shameless, unapologetic amnesty whore when they see one. ;)

I know nothing about numerology, but early on in the primaries, I heard a numerologist on the radio say that McCain’s numbers are excellent this year....for whatever that is worth.

And another thing: If you’re really worried about McCain’s dirty laundry, perhaps this list on Hillary will help: “Why are Americans stupid enough to even consider such a degenerate for PRESIDENT?” http://noiri.blogspot.com/2008/02/hillary-for-president.html

Sobering link. Thank you.

How selfish can our electorate be, to allow a win for Hillary?

It boggles my mind. Are they under the age of 18 and have no memory of the Clinton years?

OK. So basically, you see McCain as being treacherous, right? I don't.

Perhaps you can help me out then. Could you supply me a list of conservative bills that McCain authored? Could you list for me some issues that were decided by one vote, where McCain was on our side? Can you point me to anything McCain has actually done to suggest that he would at least make an honest effort to appoint judges like Alito?

NO. But I’m sure you could if you made the effort.

NO. But I’m sure you could if you made the effort.

Do you know of any times in the last six years that McCain was on the right side of an issue that came down to the last vote? Do you know of any conservative legislation he authored in that time?

Given that I know of at least two times McCain stabbed us in the back on close votes (ANWR, and G14), and given that he's authored at least four pieces of well-known anti-conservative legislation (with Edwards, Feingold, Kennedy, and Lieberman) I would think that if you're going to support him you should be able to offer at least something he's done to balance those.

Absolutely none. Indeed his behavior points in that direction. If not a mole, then a very confused pubbie.

Actually, upon further consideration I don't think he's a mole. I think he's a puppet, but he doesn't recognize himself as such. Rather, he's become so addicted to the accolades he receives for crossing the aisle that the Democrats now know how to pull his strings.

Rush Limbaugh does not want liberals to run the Republican Party when McCain swings back to the left to win the election.

I like the puppet analogy.
