SO ... DID HE SAY THE RIGHT THINGS?

This for all of you "die-hard Reagan Republicans" out there ... you know, the ones who are acting like you're not going to support John McCain in this year's election .. and who may even sit this one out. By now you should have heard about McCain's speech yesterday before CPAC. Here are just some of the things McCain said he would do:

** Continue to carry the fight to the Islamic radicals and goons wherever we can get to them.
88 Close the borders .. tight .. before any consideration is given as to what to do with the illegals who are already here.
** Not sign a bill with earmarks in it. ANY earmarks in it.
** Reduce the size of government.
** Not allow the expansion of entitlement programs
** Make the Bush tax cuts permanent
** Cut corporate tax rates.
** End AMT
** Develop free market solutions for health care, and respect for the right of free individuals to make choices for themselves.

I don't know, but that sounds like a fairly good conservative platform for me. Sure, there are things that I, as a Libertarian, would change.

For instance, not only would I block the expansion of entitlement programs, I would start a rollback.

Making the Bush tax cuts permanent would not be enough .. there's the FairTax.

And then there's my idea for a 10th Amendment Commission .. and I would like to see the systematic elimination of all government schools, beginning with transferring power to local governments and mandating voucher and school choice programs as a prerequisite for any school to get any federal government money at all.

But .. McCain is the guy. He's going to be the nominee unless something really bizarre happens. If you don't support his candidacy .. if you sit out the election .. just how much influence do you think you are going to have during his presidency? That is ...if your actions don't put Hideous Hillary in office.

As with Romney, I will believe the record over the rhetoric. It matters little to me what he says.

He said what he needed to say. What did you expect him to say?

You know, Buddie, why don’t you just give us a bit of time to swallow this. To run a coup and the next morning to ask everyone that’s been shafted to get on board and embrace it — maybe, just maybe, that’s asking an awful lot. Do we have to give up all our principles within the first 24 hours? Could we have a bit of time to chew on this before you decide WE are the problem?

Just a thot.

I don’t think Prenuptial Agreements are binding in politics.

He said some of the right things, and started on the path to courting my vote.

What I would like to hear him say is, "I am sorry for McCain-Feingold, and my attempts to give Amnesty to millions of criminal border crossers. I promise to correct those wrongs while I am President, and to prove it to you that I am serious, I will select from the following people to be my Veep, Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson, and Mitt Romney."

And I would like to thank the talk radio hosts and conservative activists for putting my feet to the fire."

So he talked a good game! But less than a year ago he was pushing for a massive illegal amnesty. He originally voted against the Bush tax cuts, one of only two Republican Senators to do so. He also wants to institute economic controls for very dubious gains in the fight against global warming.

Which McCain do I believe: the one that spoke at CPAC yesterday, or the one that's been in Congress the last twenty years?

Yes he is the BIG TENT nominee, he did not get there with conservative votes and based upon what would cause anyone to think they can influence this guy... This stuff just keeps getting dumb and dumber. McCain does NOT need US to win, so why allll this whining about what Conservative are going to do?

And if we vote for McCain after he and others have said that conservatives weren’t necessary for him to win primaries, just because Republicans tell us to, how much influence will we have when it comes time to pick the next nominee....

No thanks. I prefer to stay VTD free. It’s untelling what McCain picked up from laying down with the dogs he’s be laying with.

In the primary I voted for a man with a proven record and it looks like I’ll be writing his name in for the general election.

This is where this snake McCain always gives himself room to screw us. What is there to consider? Close the border, give employers a way to verify who they are hiring, then sanction the hell out of violators.

No Amnesty!

The problem isn't that McCain doesn't sound like a conservative, it's that he doesn't act like one.

It isn’t what he said, it’s what he has done.

At least Mr. Romney had a liberal state to do the liberal things he has done in, he has an excuse. What is Mr. McCains excuse for sticking it in the eye of Rebuplicans in Congress? Yes, an apology for his past mistakes would go a long way.
