(December 2007) Marshallese in Arkansas unhealthy, ineligible for health care programs

LITTLE ROCK -- The people of the Republic of the Marshall Islands are among the unhealthiest people in the world. An estimated 6,000-8,000 Marshallese immigrants live in Springdale, AR. and the surrounding areas, of whom 867 are children enrolled in the Springdale School District, Pritchard told the House and Senate Interim Committees on Public Health, Welfare and Labor.Deputy State Health Officer Dr. Joe Bates testified that between 2000 and 2005, Northwest Arkansas had nine cases of congenital syphilis, six of which involved Marshallese; 38 people with infectious syphilis, 21 of whom were Marshallese; and nine cases of leprosy, all Marshallese.

Lawmakers also heard testimony from a leader in the Marshallese immigrant community who cried as she asked the legislators to do something to help. Sen. Bill Pritchard, R-Elkins, said the risk of an outbreak of serious disease is high and described the situation as a "time bomb."

Bates said the rate of leprosy in the Marshall Islands is the highest in the world, yet no survey has been done to determine the extent of the disease in among Marshallese immigrants in Arkansas.

"We think there are two to three times more cases of leprosy than we know about," he said.

“The Marshall Islands have a special relationship with the U.S. Our relations are governed by the Compact of Free Association, through which Marshall Islanders enjoy certain privileges, including with regard to employment and immigration.”

You say that as if it were a good thing. Sorry, I’m not buying it.

We are welcoming a whole horde of people who are uneducated, poor, diseased, and bringing their various tribal and religious conflicts with them. No thanks. Why can’t we bring in immigrants who will contribute something positive rather than be a drain on our resources? If that is xenophobic, then count me in.

Glad you brought it up, actually. Leprosy and tuberculosis are caused by the same genus, a bacillus named Mycobacterium, the former Mycobacterium leprae and the latter (big surprise) Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is exceedingly interesting that both of these are present in the same population. The organisms are difficult to treat with antibiotics because they have a lipid (fatty) coating that prevents them from absorbing the antibiotics. Some of the ones that do work are the sulfones, which is pretty wicked stuff. Beats dying, I guess, but only barely.

I stayed up nights studying this stuff a long time ago and I'm gonna get something out of it, dang it! ;-)

Unfortunately, this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of what is to come.

Why are we letting all these people into the US? Do we want to be a third world country, too? Unbelievable!

Marshall Islanders are in the US because the Marshall Islands is a Republic in free association with the United States. That means that the United States guarantees its defense, subsidizes its entire economy, allows free passage of its citizens, and, in return, gets to drops hydrogen bombs on it from time to time.

Well, before 1986, the Marshall Islands was effectively a territory of the United States. Now it's an independent nation. Would you rather the US reassert its sovereignty over the archepelago? It's not like the US dropped hydrogen bombs on them or anything...

Why are they here? Were they relocated due to nuclear testing, or what?

Well, maybe I can answer the question with a photo of Bikini Atoll, Republic of Marshall Islands:

How about we make sure they are at least healthy before we let them into the country?

Go to Post #9 and read the story:

"The compact also allows citizens of the Marshall Islands to live and work in the United States without being subject to U.S. immigration laws, but they are ineligible for Medicare, non-emergency Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and most other forms of federally-funded public assistance.

They may arrive here healthy, but they're poor and unskilled and then not entitled to government handouts when they're here, so if they get sick, they're screwed.

I'm against government handouts of any kind as a general rule, but this "special relationship" business presents a special dilemma.

It's like our relationship with the Anerican Indians... we "owe them one" big time, so it sucks for us, but we kinda have to take it on the chin and pony up some cash for these sad bastards.

We blew up their country. The least we can do is let a few of them in. But one question I have though is why the heck weren’t these people tested before they came in?

My understanding is that most people with a European background have inherited resistance to leprosy. I believe that today fairly simple and reliable treatment is available.

Not really. We just changed the name to Hanson’s disease to avoid the stigma. There are usually effective treatments, so the disease is halted with just a few patches of discolored skin. The problem is that illegals (and others in this case) comingle with those that are least likely to recognize they are infected and/or least likely to go to a doctor about the initially minor symptoms. That is why ALL immigrants should be required to pass a health check, and another reason why McLame’s Open Borders policy is fatally flawed.
