How about we make sure they are at least healthy before we let them into the country?

Go to Post #9 and read the story:

"The compact also allows citizens of the Marshall Islands to live and work in the United States without being subject to U.S. immigration laws, but they are ineligible for Medicare, non-emergency Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and most other forms of federally-funded public assistance.

They may arrive here healthy, but they're poor and unskilled and then not entitled to government handouts when they're here, so if they get sick, they're screwed.

I'm against government handouts of any kind as a general rule, but this "special relationship" business presents a special dilemma.

It's like our relationship with the Anerican Indians... we "owe them one" big time, so it sucks for us, but we kinda have to take it on the chin and pony up some cash for these sad bastards.
