McCain asks conservatives for support

Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.

McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.

"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

Tet68, I’m not trying to pile on here by any means, but I have to agree with Joanie-F’s logic in her post to you.

I have pinged in Squantos because he let me know this discussion was taking place, and Joanie-F because I am mentioning her post.

I am very sympathetic to your view on this Tet68. I have been on both ends of this argument and realize you, like us, are trying to come up with the best possible game plan for this fall out of a strong conviction to do what is best for the nation we love.

As Joanie-F states, we have been playing the lesser of two evils game for so long, we have now come to the place that the likes of McCain now carries the party standard, and at this point I simply cannot go along with the lesser of twos any longer.

As Joanie-F stated, we get a worse guy every four years. And now facing a McCain presidency, my only question is what could possibly be worse than McCain? The sad thing is, there will be something worse and in four or eight yeas, we’ll have to choose then between the lesser of two evils again. This is getting us nowhere.

IMO, we make a stand. We show the party that it is dead without us. And then we demand they make some changes.

At the same time, I recommend we get some like mined people together and start a party dedicated to the founding principles and conservatism in general. I don’t recommend it be something we slap together before his fall. It should be something we start locally, and build up to the state then federal levels.

This is going to take four to ten years to get off the ground, but in the end we will have replaced the Republican party with one that will adhere to strict conservative principles, or else. Any member of that party will tow the line or find him/herself without a part. We don’t need leftists. If we did we’d be voting for democrats.

That’s the way I see it. And I would love to invite folks to a founding meeting where we could discuss the feasability of doing this, and if agreed to, a detailed plan to create the party that wil lead this nation, back to the founding principles, and into the future.

Anyone interested in this type of endeavor, let me know. My ideas don’t have to prevail, but it’s time to acknowedge that our nation’s best interests are not being met with politics as usual.

It’s time for a new day in American, and we need to step up.

The Republican party has chosen not to.

McCain is a false-flag operation.

His attack on the First Amendment is an attack on the Republic; it is treason.

His attempts to open the border to invasion--and more gangs, drugs, violence and dissolution--are likewise damaging to the nation's very existence.

His intention to foist the suffocating fascism of global warming regulation will cripple the economy.

His oppositon to tax cuts is diametrically opposed to Reagan conservatism, yet the hollow men line up to praise his conservatism.

We have been subjected to a kabuki theater, fearsome painted masks paraded to foist this dangerous candidate upon us.

His role is to clear the field of battle for Hillary as Frau Mao, and Obama as the Twelfth Imam.

Are we so stupid we do not see McCain is a programmed device.

Are we to welcome his Trojan horse into the city and drink wine until we slumber.

Are we so blind we do not see that as he reaches out to us, his middle finger is extended.

McCain is an enemy of conservatives and a fellow traveller of the left.

To any who say he got the message on the border, have him explain Juan Hernandez.

The better to eat you with--

Hey, McCain, you ate the conservatives and put on their clothes--that doesn't make you a conservative.

Thanks for the ping. Brilliant, Joanie. You have summed up what most conservatives are thinking at this point in the election. Jim, you must read post #180.

Brilliant, joanie--as usual, simply brilliant. If ever there was a single voice--just when we need it--to express the feelings of true conservatives, your post is that voice.

I will not, under any circumstances support or vote for John McCain. To say that he is a double dealing two faced weasel is to state the obvious. There are so many excellent reasons not to support him, just when we are ready to sum them up, here comes a few more. His claim as a conservative possesses sort of a surface sheen because he has somehow managed to garner an ACU rating of 83 -- undoubtedly because there are so very many of the everyday issues, he was able to slither into a kind of B-grade notwithstanding his "maverick" tendency to cross the aisle and jump into bed with the Rats on virtually every single one of the "touchstone" issues, those which separate the courageous, dedicated conservative from the faux conservatives--the ones who say "C'mon, you know we all have to get behind McCain to prevent the Rats from winning with Hillary or Obama."

What the faux conservatives cannot conceive, and will never understand, is that the true conservative is so fed up to the teeth with pulling that damned lever every four years for the "least worse" candidate, we now refuse to continue that madness because we have, at long last, realized that doing so never brings us an improvement in the conduct of the Republican party and, especially, its so called "leadership". Instead, they become more convinced they can continue on course, full speed ahead with big government, big spending, more UN and globaloney. Because we know that this will stop only when we stop pulling that "least worse" lever, more of us than ever before have decided to draw a line in the sand. This time, no more "least worse" and NO to McCain.

When even a guy like Duncan Hunter--not the perfect conservative, but close enough to Reagan to make him the only true conservative in this race--cannot garner more than 5% (at best) anyplace, it really is time to recognize just how far we have fallen, since Reagan left office, by going along with the GOP. "Go along to get along" was a lousy policy back in the silk sock country club Bob Michael era, and it's even a worse one today.

I'm done.

Agree........keep me on yer ping list Phil.

On the litmus test issues of our time, only partially excluding Iraq, McCain is a liberal.

— He excoriated Samuel Alito as too “conservative.”

— He promoted amnesty for 20 million illegal immigrants.

— He abridged citizens’ free speech (in favor of the media) with McCain-Feingold.

— He hysterically opposes waterboarding terrorists and wants to shut down Guantanamo.

— He denounced the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

— He opposes ANWR and supports the global warming cult, even posturing with fellow mountebank Arnold Schwarzenegger in front of solar panels.

The only site that would have been more appropriate for Schwarzenegger in endorsing McCain would have been in front of an abortion clinic.

Suggests a wholly appropriate campaign slogan for the candidate in question: “BOOBS FOR McCAIN IN 2008!” ;)

Sigh. Loud sigh.

LOL> Roger that. But look people, there is a difference--ask yourself who you want running the WoT--MCain or Clinton/Obama. Who do you want on taxes--McCain or Obama/Clinton. If a bill is passed revoking the Partial birth abortion ban, who do you want deciding whether to sign or veto--McCain, or Clintama.

Just because we have bad choices does not mean we have NO coices.

No way will I vote for McCain. I prefer to let the dems have a chance to screw things up for the next four years.

Presidents are for four years at a time. Supreme Court Justices are forever.

I will vote for McCain if he picks a solid conservative Veep

Good point. This is one concrete response he can make to confirm his bona fides and truly unite the party.

All the rest is just bullsh*t and promises.

180: Amen. I agree 100%. I will not drink the RINO arsenic koolaid again, because I’m told it will kill me more slowly than ‘Rat cyanide koolaid.

I won’t vote for a mentally unstable open borders traitor, even if he shamefully lies and calls himself a “Reagan conservative.”

Who the hell is Juan McCain, of all people, to now demand party loyalty?!?

It’s MY turn to be a “maverick.” The hell with McCain and all RINOs. They can rot where it’s hot.

I will no longer play an active role in the hi-jacking of the republican party … or the suicide of our beloved republic.

God bless you and thank you so much for having the courage to not throw your principles out the window because of the manipulation by those who have hijacked the GOP and our country. I wish people could look at the bigger picture of what has been happening, instead of falling for the same thing every 4 years - even when it gets more and more obvious.

As far as what may happen, imo the only person we should answer to is God, and I know God doesn't want me to go against my conscience and betray all my core principles by supporting one evil over another evil, only because it is marginally less evil. Better to vote for no evils, and not have to be responsible for aiding the destruction of the Republican party and our republic, as you so eloquently stated.
