The Dewey Loman American Legion Post 109 is the place to be tonight for Maryland Republicans.
Thats where presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney are both scheduled to speak this evening in Halethorpe Maryland.
Romney was previously scheduled to attend the event, while McCain announced his surprise appearance this morning.
And just minutes ago, McCains campaign put out word that the Arizona senator would be picking up a major endorsement at this evenings Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.
Minutes later, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney announced he would be ending his bid for the White House.
One source with knowledge of tonights event tells PolitickerMD.com that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich will not be the one introducing McCain before the presidential candidate delivers brief remarks; however, Ehrlich aides say he will be announcing his endorsement this evening.
But does an Ehrlich endorsement qualify for a national teaser endorsement at this stage of McCain's campaign? We think not.
There are implications that Romney, who has been locked in a bitter fight with McCain, would make the quick endorsement with the hope of unifying their party.
According to an advance text of his speech to the 2008 CPAC conference obtained by Times Mark Halperin, Romney said, I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know.
But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.
And he already said that today in his speech at CPAC, but not in those words.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Obama is weak, and John McCain can beat him. There are WAY too many white folks with liberal guilt who will look at the two and think, “Wow, here is my chance to do something to make myself feel so GOOD by being open to a President who is black, and when I tell people, they’ll think well of me.” Doesn’t matter that Obama is ignorant of foreign policy, and is the least qualified person to be President. He’s black, and those folks will feel good about themselves when they vote for him, and isn’t that, after all, what counts the most? /s
It is hypocritical to Romney’s past comments. Comments made as recently as this last week. That may not bother some people, but it doesn’t stop the truth from being the truth.
My donations will flow to McCain to beat Hillary Marxist Clinton!
Out Troops will be out of Harms way Once the enemy knows someone like McCain who has the resolve to complete the mission is coming to greet them.
Support Our Troops
McCain 2008
That’s how parties work, though. No matter how bitterly fought the primary, the candidates are ultimately supposed to unite behind the winner. Many here criticized McCain (fairly, I think) for his reluctance to support Bush in 2000.
Like most Americans, I have always supported the families of MIA and POWs in their efforts to get answers. Not John McCain. He has created legislation and run all the interference he could possibly muster to prevent critical POW and MIA documents from the public domain.
As a POW himself, one can only speculate as to why.
I could never vote for the likes of John McCain for this reason alone. He has done great harm to those brave men, women, and their families. John McCain has much to answer for in this regard. I am sure the demos will be pointing all this out soon enough. They’re lying in wait with baited breath.
The GOP has fallen into their trap. Demos have what they wanted. A man with skeletons back from nam. The swiftboating of Kerry will be nothing compared to what the demos have in mind for McCain.
Besides all this, we don’t call him McAmesty for nada. All his lies, all his deceits, and all his skeletons await him.
It’s gonna be a rough 8 freakin years no matter what happens.
What counts the MOST to me is to get rid of the Clintons as soon as possible. We have never had this chance before. Call it obsessive hatred or whatever you want. Clinton’s are the worst possible scenario in my opinion. A crossover vote for Obama is that CHANCE!
It’s been a big “setup” by the GOP and the media for a long time now. Too many will realize this too late.
My intent was not to attack Romney, but rather a reaction to our party leaderships spineless, unprincipled, destructive allegiance to win at all costs philosophy. For were is the victory in becoming the opposition.
“Lets just get this crap over with and vote for the WORSE of two evils.
Cthulhu ‘08!”
I’ve been meaning to ask what that means and you seem to be the nearest victim...?
i agree
i dont like Shamnesty, McCain Feingold and lack of ANWR drilling to name a few
i also think he will in most likelyhood lose in November
i however will vote for him as a protest against Hill/Bama.
Yep, you must have lurked around here in 2000 when the same things happened with GWB.
It will be interesting to in what order each party prostrates themselves at the feet of McCain and kisses the ring.
My personal prediction is would be...
1 - Hannity
2 - Rush Limbaugh
3 - FreeRepublic
4 - Ann Coulter
Rush's conversion will be pretty sad as one day a caller will complain about McCain and he'll out of the blue say, "now wait now, McCain isn't perfect but he would be the most conservative president since Reagan and after studying his record more closely, he votes were actually brilliant strateger - he votes against the conservatives to take the issue away from the democrats".
That's true enough. But come on. McCain hasn't won it yet. And Romney is saying he is specifically stepping out so that McCain can go on and be successful. It is just too premature to be about parties coming together after a bitterly fought primary. No, this is what you call hypocrisy.
I am all for partisanship because I think it serves representative government that is of/by/for the people very well. Battles over ideas are vital to finding the best solutions and eliminating disasters. However, I am not for party trumping principle. Not for selling out everything to bank a win in the R column. Not for placing power as the number one principle to live by. If you win you had better win something or why bother. So I do not favor supporting anyone and everyone so long as they call themselves Republican and not Democrat. That said, I'm not taking a stand on whether people should support McCain or not. Let their conscience be their guide. They answer to God for what they do. Be sure they can live with it. No I do not think a principled "none of the above" is a vote for the worst candidate. The worst candidate wins only because millions of voters like him. We get what we deserve. Stopping the worst is not excuse enough for trashing your own party and nixing any hope for better options in the future. It just isn't. No candidate is perfect, but there is a line each voter must draw. I can't make that decision for anyone but myself. I can only share what I will do. I'm not sure that I can vote for McCain no matter what. Neither would I ever be able to support Romney. I do not see Huckabee as perfect, but I can support him. I won't be bullied into casting a vote I can't live with. It is my vote and does not belong to any party. The Republicans get my support only while they keep earning it.
It might have been possible for Romney (or Huckabee, though his odds were even worse) to still win it, but businessmen and politicians--and Romney is both--generally don't simply hope for the possible (a la Obama); they act based on what is likely, and realistically McCain has all but sewn up the nomination.
The country and the conservative movement is more important to me than getting a MacConservative like MacCain in the White House. It will be a long two years, but at least conservatism can look forward to a future, something that they'd be self-aborting by putting a MacFraud like MacCain in the Oval Office.
If he does I lose all respect for him, if he thinks being a “party” guy on McCain will help him in 2012 forget it, besides, isn’t the world supposed to end in 2012 anyway?
