BREAKING: Romney to endorse McCain tonight?
politicker md ^ | 2-7-08 | Editor

The Dewey Loman American Legion Post 109 is the place to be tonight for Maryland Republicans.

That’s where presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney are both scheduled to speak this evening in Halethorpe Maryland.

Romney was previously scheduled to attend the event, while McCain announced his surprise appearance this morning.

And just minutes ago, McCain’s campaign put out word that the Arizona senator would be picking up “a major endorsement” at this evening’s Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.

Minutes later, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney announced he would be ending his bid for the White House.

One source with knowledge of tonight’s event tells PolitickerMD.com that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich will not be the one introducing McCain before the presidential candidate delivers brief remarks; however, Ehrlich aides say he will be announcing his endorsement this evening.

But does an Ehrlich endorsement qualify for a national teaser endorsement at this stage of McCain's campaign? We think not.

There are implications that Romney, who has been locked in a bitter fight with McCain, would make the quick endorsement with the hope of unifying their party.

According to an advance text of his speech to the 2008 CPAC conference obtained by Time’s Mark Halperin, Romney said, “I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know.”

“But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.”

One last example of Romney’s over-inflated sense of his own importance, and his propensity to spin fairy tales. His withdrawal has absolutely nothing to do with the war.

Actually Romney pinning his tail on McCain's donkey demonstrates these 'white guys' are NO better than the 'white woman' they claim to oppose. This is 'war' on who is who in gender.... then we have Obama to deal with once the superiority of males over females war is fought.

Is that what Romney said or is that what your crystal ball said?

Why is it that people around here are so surprised that RINOs are endorsing other RINOs?

We’ve got a bunch of people around here who spent the past year cheering for one RINO or another, now they’re stuck with a RINO they don’t seem to like. Well, it’s THEIR FAULT, if they hadn’t been so busy trying to be drum up support for their RINOs we would have had a conservative nominee (Fred or Duncan).

And if he actually has an episode and drops out, his VP choice will be our Presidential candidate.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so unenthusiasic about an election in my life.

But couldn’t some of us that can’t vote for anyone at least get enthusiastic about getting rid of the Clintons? That is my point!

It will be fun to watch everyone fold one by one and start acting like McCain is the greatest conservative ever.

The GOP knows that all they have to do is scare you with democrats and the conservatives will discard their principals like a hot potato.

At least when a democrat is in office, the republican senators tend to fight liberal and harmful moves by the president. It is doubtful that Hilary or Obama could get amnesty passed but McCain could do it easily.

What good is being tough on Iran if our country is destroyed from within.

The fact that McCain HAS to accumulate vast numbers of endorsements from noted political and media figures in order to gain sufficient credibility and legitimacy speaks for itself as to the desperate inadequacy of the candidate and the inescapable fact that the candidate is rejected and disliked by a huge segment of his voter base. That is the lesson to glean from these endorsement events. If McCain were a genuine, bonafide conservative, he wouldn’t need to accumulate endorsements from every political gameplayer who hopes to cash in on favors if he is elected President.

Deeply held ideology and principles cannot be created. They must have always existed and cannot be made up for a lack of by the better reputation and character of others through endorsements. The one group of endorsements McCain is not accepting which is considerable, is that from his close liberal buddies and Democrat Senate colleagues who have praised McCain for his decades of aid and assistance to them and his stance against his own party. I don’t give a damn who endorses McCain, it doesn’t change a damn thing. In fact, those who endorse McCain only hurt themselves and put their own reputations and character in question and jeopardy.

Thank you Polybius.

Mitt is a class act and I would have been proud to voted for him in the general.

McCain is now our nominee and I will support him.

It will be fun to watch everyone fold one by one and start acting like McCain is the greatest conservative ever.

And you know it will happen, too. Over the next few weeks, you'll start seeing articles popping up about how wonderful McCain's record is except for a few trivial details, leaving out the vast majority of the liberal stuff he's backed, his horrible flip-flopping record (including many times voting against or otherwise opposing bills he sponsored), all the times he's betrayed us, and so on. Around here, it'll be like that all never happened.

I do not post that often, but I am on this site many times a day and have been for years. I am absolutely disgusted with the attitudes here, and I could care less about any response that I probably will receive. You are so right—and Romney delievered quite a speech today. God help us if all of you choose to stay home on election day. You will all get what you deserve.

Do you Romney supporters (if it is true) consider this a “sellout”..??

No...I consider it a nod to reality. It is unrealistic to think Romney could win at this point, so if he decides to join with McCain to beat the democrats then more power to him. Even better if he is McCain's veep. McCain is probably going to be a one term president (if he wins) and Romney would be in a position to take over in 2012.

Romney did what he believed was best for this country. I admire him greatly for deciding against self-interest and choosing to unify the party to fight the democrats who are bent on our destruction.

I am not happy that McCain is the man left standing, but he is and I cannot do anything that allows the terrorists to win. Hillary and Obama will happily sell our country and our children out. We walk away from the war, we will have the terrorists gaining strength once again.

As far as all domestic matters are concerned, I think we are facing a bleak future. But, the president can’t do anything without Congress. That’s where the conservatives’ hard work needs to be done.

As for Mitt Romney, he showed himself to be a patriot and a gentleman today. His stock just went up for me. He seems to be the only man of the last three standing who put country above ego.
