But come on. McCain hasn't won it yet. And Romney is saying he is specifically stepping out so that McCain can go on and be successful. It is just too premature to be about parties coming together after a bitterly fought primary.

It might have been possible for Romney (or Huckabee, though his odds were even worse) to still win it, but businessmen and politicians--and Romney is both--generally don't simply hope for the possible (a la Obama); they act based on what is likely, and realistically McCain has all but sewn up the nomination.

Perhaps. History teaches us that it ain’t over till it’s over. I’m not sorry Mitt is out. Neither do I choose to celebrate when others are disappointed. No reason to smack him when he’s down unless he continues to toss cheap shots at Huckabee.

Exactly. I opined that my opinion of Romney would fall if he did not step down quickly.

And he did. Nice touch to a long campaign.
