BREAKING: Romney to endorse McCain tonight?
politicker md ^ | 2-7-08 | Editor

The Dewey Loman American Legion Post 109 is the place to be tonight for Maryland Republicans.

That’s where presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney are both scheduled to speak this evening in Halethorpe Maryland.

Romney was previously scheduled to attend the event, while McCain announced his surprise appearance this morning.

And just minutes ago, McCain’s campaign put out word that the Arizona senator would be picking up “a major endorsement” at this evening’s Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.

Minutes later, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney announced he would be ending his bid for the White House.

One source with knowledge of tonight’s event tells PolitickerMD.com that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich will not be the one introducing McCain before the presidential candidate delivers brief remarks; however, Ehrlich aides say he will be announcing his endorsement this evening.

But does an Ehrlich endorsement qualify for a national teaser endorsement at this stage of McCain's campaign? We think not.

There are implications that Romney, who has been locked in a bitter fight with McCain, would make the quick endorsement with the hope of unifying their party.

According to an advance text of his speech to the 2008 CPAC conference obtained by Time’s Mark Halperin, Romney said, “I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know.”

“But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.”

“In his speech, he explained why he was leaving, and it wasn’t so that he would “clear the way” for Huckabee to fight for the nomination.”

CORRECT.

ROMNEY CALLED THE RACE OVER. IT IS OVER. MCCAIN IS THE NOMINEE.

And Romney did it for selfless reasons: He wants McCain to have a head start on beating up Clinton and Obama in the fall.

Paul and Huckabee can pretend they are doing something, but its a vanity run from here on out.

1) Do you not believe the media is liberal?
2) Do you not believe that they want other liberals to win?

"keeping Obama and Hill out is why i am voting McCain in the general"

They do make a lovely couple. I'm thinking Macareno likes Hillary much more than you do. I'm thinking they both have a great admiration for each other which goes beyond their political like mindedness.

Only a liberal thinks “pro-environment” is a political issue.

conservatives are pro-environment, we are also pro*freedom*.

Romney’s moving his ambitions back. I think he now wants to be VP first. You watch. He was afraid Huckabee would get the VP slot. He’s convinced McCain will win and he wants to be his vp. Never mind that he was claiming McCain was a liberal and had to be stopped and Huckabee was the necessary sacrifice.

“The grownups, and Romney has proved himself to be one of them, need to do what it takes to win the war and keep Iran from militarily controlling 70% of the World’s known oil reserves while actively seeking nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them to U.S. soil.”

Amen!

I wish the primary process had allowed us a better standard bearer, but the stakes are too high to take my ball and go home.

Do you think I’m liberal on the environment issue? It’s not a problem of mine.

she probably aint gettin it from Bill but McCains wife is much better looking than Hill so i doubt he is popping viagra for Hill. that being said McCains ACU ranking in 2006 was 65 and had a lifetime of 82
Hill’s is 12 and 9
while Bama is 8 and 8
there is a big divide between Hill/Bama and McCain - granted not as much as we would like but enough for me to vote for McCain. i shudder to think of Hill or Bama getting in.

The others weren’t really rumors, they were leaks from actual conversations, and based on reality.

This is a rumor based on a statement about a major endorsement, and the fact that at one point both candidates were scheduled to be in the same place.

I hope for the Maryland folk’s sake that Romney decides to show up, because he’s a good speaker and a fine man to hear from.

I can’t attend our Lincoln/Reagan dinner on Saturday, but I had heard a candidate was going to show up, and not knowing who it was I was worried I’d miss a good chance to meet Romney.

I can’t imagine his endorsement of McCain would go any further than something to the effect of “the primary voters have chosen McCain to represent our party, and it’s time to unite behind him and begin the true fight.” This is the sort of endorsement any Republican can reasonably make of his former opponent, no matter how big their differences were in the primary.

... And I would not be surprised...If some of our fervent conservatives, somehow, beging to see him as the 'conservative' candidate after all!... When principleas are as rigid as a 'rubber-band' nothing amazes me anymore.

Just remember people no voting is a choice or voting for Obhama, is another choice... :)

Huckabee(who I would vote for in the general) has almost no chance at the nomination, and McCain still doesn’t get my vote no matter what.

You need to look up the definition of a LEADER. You don't have to hold office to LEAD.

The irony of all ironies would be if Willard endorsed McCain BEFORE Fred Thompson, since it was Team Romney that ceaselessly spread the unfounded rumor that Fred would withdraw and immediately back McCain.

How about that... Mitt was the real "stalking horse" all along. This campaign season is FUBAR, for sure.

I did E-mail Romney, per your request. Don’t know if it will do any good, but it felt good. I told him the GOP will be looking for a leader in about four years. That would give him some time, if he so chooses, to walk the walk and talk the talk

Of the roughly 12 million people who have voted in the republican primary so far, McCain had the support of 4.7 million of them, and Romney about 4 million of them.

If Romney could actually get the VP slot, wouldn’t that honor the 4 million people who voted for him?

Well, I can see a counter argument. Those who voted for him ONLY to stop McCain would be upset that he was now helping McCain — except that McCain already IS our nominee, it’s already over.

So the people who would be upset at him helping are people who don’t want McCain to win in the general election.

And like it or not, Romney is a REAL republican, and will support the republican voters choice for the republican nomination.

I don’t think McCain will pick Romney, but if he did, we’d have a ticked that represented about 3/4ths of the voters in our primary.

Maybe some don’t think the republicans showing up to vote in the primary are representative of “republicans”, but they ARE voting as republicans, and having a ticket that represents the votes of 75% of them wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Sure, I would love to have seen Thompson be the 2nd guy, or maybe even someone more rock-solid conservative who had proven the ability to get a lot of people to show up and vote for them.

But where is that other person? Huckabee? Unfortunately, he only gets votes from people who are likely to vote anyway, and who are in states where we are likely to win anyway.

So no, I would not consider Romney working for McCain, or even accepting the VP slot, to be a sellout now that McCain is already our nominee.

If Thompson was still in the race, and Romney dropped out and supported McCain, I would have been very upset, even if it was for a VP slot.

But given the realities, I see no problem here. Even though I don’t think the rumor is actually true.
