With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
Black, well-spoken conservative from an eastern state - a blue one that will probably be in play with McCain. Gold.
I’d love Santorum, but I doubt that will happen (I actually think Santorum was probably going to be Mitt’s running mate).
Ken Blackwell could be good too. Ohio is definitely a swing state trending blue. He could keep it red.
As said before by Rove (who engineered two POTUS election victories), the only thing that’s important about picking a VP nominee is that the POTUS nominee doesn’t screw it up.
If someone thinks that a VP selection will help win certain states, please refer to:
Bob Dole ‘76
Lloyd Benson ‘84
Jack Kemp ‘96
Alice Gore would make a great VP for McCain, they think alike!
how about dennis mckucinch
johnny frick n denny frack
frick n frack.
FRED!
Either Fred or Huckabee would appear to help McCain in the swing South. Huckabee is younger, but unlike Fred, alienated a lot of folks (specifically, many FredHeads-Who-Ended-Up-Backing-Romney), too.
I’m starting to warm up to the idea of a Fred pick. Perhaps because I supported Fred for Prez, I over-corrected.
At least we know he likes puppies.
Then it must be true.
Ann Coulter.
Kerry would be perfect. After all, McCain almost ran as his VP pick. BTW, did you know Kerry served in Vietnam?
I would like Romney, but how about Bobby Jindal?
McCain will select Joe Lieberman and tell conservatives to go eat an excrement sandwich!
I suggest my butt, so that he can kiss it.
However, I just don't think McCain has the temperment to mend fences with an old opponent just because it's the smart thing to do.
I would like Romney, but how about Bobby Jindal?
I don’t know but it better be a damn good one for me to even consider to vote for McInsane. Someone a lot younger with no health issues. ;-`)
I would like Romney, but how about Bobby Jindal?
If we're gonna have a Clinton on the ballot in Nov, why not a Bush?
I’d pick Fred but I think his age gets in the way. Cheney has the health thing just like McCain does. Lieberman is still a Dem.
What about Colin Powell?
