Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

The Huckster actually sounded good tonite. Infact, his closing answer to the idiotic question of if Readan supported you nonsense....Huckabee, and to a lesser degree Paul got the answer right. How can anyone presume to know how or why Ronaldus Magnus would support a particular candidate? Better to say that I don’t know what President Reagan would thing, but i do know that I believe in him and his vision.....Huckabee clearly was prepared for that question and knocked it out of the park....

Forget CNN. I’m watching Matthews on MSNBC talking body language during the debate.

I have said all along that the Romney health care plan was a mistake. A big mistake.

I do not recall seeing anyone saying it out here on FR.com before I did. But of course, FReeping is only a part time job for me.

Actually, it was a tactical error to endorse that Plan by the Romney adviser people (and him) that he unlikely can ever recover from.

He gave a good argument for his Health Care Program tonight, but I ain’t jumping on that bus either.

We will get health care sometime late next year when Hillary rams it down all of our throats. At least we’ll all be able to say that we were against it.

Some of us will be able to still say that we tried, and actually could have stopped Hillary from becoming President.

You Sir, will not be one of those folks.

I don’t like McCain (even a little), but I don’t think he hurt himself badly at all. He was himself, just as he always is. People have been voting for him anyway, and I doubt that will start because of tonight.

Dang...I don't want you to be right. But you have a good point. Sad to say most voters don't even pay attention. But I will remain ever hopeful!

McCain really tried to downplay his role in the amnesty bill...”we can argue about who wanted what, etc. etc.”

I doubt you’d be able to understand it. I imagine you’ve read it all and have just picked out the parts that show your bias. So I won’t waste much time arguing with you, but I will point out when you’re wrong so others don’t fall for yours and McAmnesty’s lies.

That's the same incomplete excerpt that the McStain people are using. As written it seems to indicate he was, but Romney was talking about a interview that Malaky had with a reporter where he said that He and Bush had discussed issues like deadlines and timetables for the Iraqi government. The Iraqi legislature!

If you have the entire article, the followup question from the reporter was to ask if Romney was talking about a timetable to withdraw. He emphatically said no, that Bush and Malaky likely had discussed all sorts of benchmarks and timetables and that they must be kept private. That you don't want the enemy who is trying to defeat these timetables a chance to know what they are as it will help the enemy.

At the time, if you recall, Malaky was talking about having the several provinces under Iraqi control by a date certain, and I believe he said December 07, which happened almost on schedule.

This is what Romney was thinking. He has never said that we should withdraw without winning. Never!

This issue is a political hit job on Romney, and their is no defense against it when people will not beleve what he says and the quotes in context.

Gore pulled this same sort of crap on Bill Bradley when he inferred that bradley was racist.

McStain is a a master at this crap. He learned it in the Senate reelections.

He is a no good, piece of work. The last thing he would ever do is shoot straight.

I saw him the other week being helped by his wife to deplane and shuffled along.

That is interesting. I have been impressed that Mrs. McCain is always...always at his side. I thought "what a loyal supportive wife". It never occurred to me that she might be staying that close for health reasons.

We already know he had deferment. That’s why he regrets NOT SERVING. He didn’t say he wished he had gotten the chance, he says he regrets not doing it.

I do not regret not serving. I am thankful others have served, and thankful that I was too young for Vietnam, and too hold when they re-instead selective service.

McCain called the Swift Boat Veterans for truth “dishonest and dishonorable.”

Indeed. And having served on the boats alongside them, I know them to be the opposite. It was Kerry that was dishonest and dishonorable.

I read the entire article.

Do you have a transcript? If so, please post it.

Duncan Hunter also called Romney on the issue.

I think his past service may help very little. I do see him as the stronger candidate on defense. He played a big role in the surge of recent. He has not flip-flopped and I don’t believe he ever will regarding the WOT. I prefer his experience in this day and age on the issue.

All Romney people since Fred dropped out.

Same here. And I've seen some Huckabee supporters see the light and they're considering Romney also.

You are a good Paulite.

But many of us are not content to have a "fortress America" while scumbag terrorists murder and put bounty on American heads.

You and Ron Paul are welcome to stay home and put the covers over your head to shut the world out. I have no problem with that.

Just stay the hell off the debate stage if you can't poll more than 3% in Florida, it's a waste of everybodys time and unneccessary time spent out from under the covers.
