McCain beats Romney in Florida GOP race

MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.

"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."

The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.

Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.

I’ll hold my nose and vote for Mcain. At least he is pro life, although I have no idea what kind of judges he’d nominate...I DO know what kind hillary would nominate.

What it shows is that Rush Limbaugh has absolutely no influence in Republican politics. Since he started his jihad against McCain, McCain has won SC and FL. Maybe Rush should just shut up. I like Rush, but his influence on the political scene is highly overrated. He was all over the 2006 elections and we lost, He was all over the 2000 Presidential race and we won in the USSC, but lost the popular vote. I know Rush’s ego will never allow him to admit it, but while he is entertaining, he is also pretty irrelevant.

That would be the right thing to do. Why is that bigoted. Please. Moral relativism is unbecoming

Sickening stuff this McCain win.

Mitt Romney will be getting my vote next Tuesday and if McCain wins the nomination I will be sitting out this general election and focus my monies on every real conservative cause afterwards. If the Republican party is no longer conservative as it seems it presently is not, then they will not be getting my money, but real conservatives and causes will.

This is one conservative that will not suck up to McCain no matter what. I would rather sit out the next four years thank you very much.

"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party,"

He'll manage one thing - all the conservatives will be united. AGAINST him.

I'd rather vote in a RINO than a Dim. My goal is to keep either one of them out of the White House.

It doesn't matter what you think. A lot of conservatives are going to stay home if McCain is the nominee, therefore negating your vote. That is simply a fact.

We may be entering a wilderness period for conservatism.
Remember that Goldwater and Reagan went through those desert-filled years. Challenge to stay true to conservative values when it seems all Hellary is unleashed on us. We will fight and like Churchill...never surrender. Like the founding fathers the true patriot conservatives are the salt and light of this assaulted Republic.

“It ain’t over yet. Super Tuesday will go Mitt’s way.”

I hope you are right! Sure hope more good endorsements come to Mitt Romney and that the conservative voters on Super Tuesday will realize Romney is the one they need to support. I, for one, will volunteer now to work for Romney and donate to his campaign. I will not vote for John McCain if he is the nominee. I pray Mitt Romney is the one who faces Hillary or Obama in November!

Sorry, I would rather just vote Hillery in so the new generation can get a taste of what we got in the Carter years. I guess every generation needs to learn the hard way. Besides, there is no way McCain can win the general election without conservative support. I just can’t hold my nose tight enough to vote for McCain.

“The states you referred to are all rat states”
Aside from California, they are all winner-take-all states, and McCain will get 100% of their delegates.

I’m in Florida and certainly never voted for Mc Cain, just looking at him on the TV makes me want to puke.

you won because the media was cheerleading for you.

If they had asked you about your stances on illegal immigration, taxes, etc etc

you the media make me puke and you should be ashamed of yourselves for the cheerleading what you have done.

As for martinez your another open border guy who should be sent packing.

No way are you a conservative as your record proves yet of course the media are either scared of you or they just love you.

As for your POW status , well a lot of men have been that does that mean they too are qualified to be president.

AARR
HEARD HIM JUST SAY WE REPUBLICANS

you are certainly not a real one, if you think Bush was a war mongerer then just wait until this bad tempered man gets control as he will be waging war everywhere with everyone who disagrees with him

again well done media you fought hard for Mc Cain , now start to ask him questions what people want to know and start to bring up his voting record

what else does McCain stand for...?

Anything that will give him a good photo op with Hillary. I have bad recollections of a Dole/Clinton campaign running through the murky past.

John McCain will be the Republican nominee for President.

Not necessarily. It appears that this could end up with no clear winner at the convention. That would make for one very interesting convention.

I tend to believe that both McCain and Clinton have won hollow/shallow victories in FL. We won't have very long to wait to find out. This week will be the shortest in either of their political lives... I hope!!!

Bill & Hill have run everyone out of patience on the left and Senator McCain has run through most of his campaign money and may soon run out of Mrs. McCain's too!!!

It's never over till the gravitationally challenged member of the feminine gender begins to vocalize, ya know...

McCain has the actual audacity to bring up the oath that specifies the defense of the country from ENEMIES, Foreign and Domestic. Real big cajones on this guy. I think the Shamnesty episode was the exact moment many conservatives cut the cord on the Admiral’s son. I don’t think I can honestly vote for man who has so much contempt for myself and my fellow conservatives.

Conservatives—millions of us—must make it unmistakably clear that the GOP risks self-destruction by alienating the Base with McCain to the point where conservatives WILL FINALLY BOLT to The Constitution Party, etc. Whether Ron Paul takes the torch and leads “the Bolt”, I don’t know. What I DO know is that McCain cannot become President! We will stop him, and at the same time, begin to develop a truly CONSERVATIVE third party that will eventually beat the GOP. It may give up 8 years of a Dem in The White House, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna elect President Johnny Mac!
