This is what happens when you can't afford a good otoscope, an ear syringe, and the time to use them.

My 2nd child has unusually narrow ear canals and persistent problems with accumulation of earwax . . . his ENT man just syringes the ear with plain warm water until he has a clear view of the eardrum. Once when he was a little kid he put some play-doh in his ear, and of course that came right out with the ear wax . . . the ENT (who is a really funny guy, I'm so sorry that he retired) held it up between thumb and forefinger and asked in a mock-solemn tone, "And what, pray tell, is THIS, young man?" "Uh . . . I guess it's play doh." "Well, tell it to stay out of your ears, young man!"

This poor boy . . . what an awful thing to have in your ear for years and years and years (and think of the potential for infection!)

I had wax cleaned out of my ear when I was a kid. I wonder why the specialists in the UK can’t. Of course, it did require a bit of “high tech” equipment: a thing that shoots a stream of water. They could at least try to improvise with a water gun, if they can afford it.
