AIKEN --- Undecided voters stood on chairs and bumped elbows just to hear Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson on Monday.
Although his visit to Aiken County was delayed by a couple of hours, about 200 residents came to his campaign stop at Papa Russ's Barbecue to see whether the Law & Order star and former senator would get past his television persona and hit on real issues.
"I think we may have decided on a candidate, but we wanted to experience him personally," Mark Thompson, of Aiken, said of his family's wait.
Mr. Thompson acknowledged that he needs a win in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary Saturday but was unapologetic about his campaign, telling voters that if he's too laid back for their tastes there are plenty of other candidates to choose from.
U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-S.C., introduced Mr. Thompson in the dining room while loudspeakers in The Alley outside allowed latecomers to hear the message.
After touting national security and Supreme Court appointments as the two most important issues facing the next president, Mr. Thompson took questions from the audience before slowly winding his way to his tour bus.
"I believe our country's better days are ahead of us if we do what we ought to do," he said.
While some voters were looking for answers, diehard supporters drove to Aiken in an effort to sway the undecided.
"I'm not from South Carolina, but I'll be contacting people in South Carolina because the alternative is unacceptable and I'll have to pay for it," said Dianne Thomas, of Charlotte, N.C. "He has more depth that's not always shown in a sound bite."
Mr. Thompson's foreign policy experience and knowledge of the economy are issues that Ms. Thomas said get lost, but she said that if voters see him they'll know he's a politician who's still about the people.
"He doesn't talk in sayings like 'change,' " she said.
Mr. Thompson wouldn't say whether a first-place finish in Saturday's primary was necessary for him to continue his quest for the Republican nomination.
He will continue his tour bus campaign in South Carolina through Friday, concluding in Columbia.
“After touting national security and Supreme Court appointments as the two most important issues facing the next president, “
Somebody gets it.
Ah HA! So that's your problem! Thompson is tied with Huckabee in NC after a massive surge in the polls!
There's a difference - At least a metronome serves a useful purpose.
Federalism will conquer abortion. Nothing at the federal level will do so in the forseeable future.
Step 1 is to get constructionist judges on the USSC bench, and overturn RvW.
Step 2, fight state to state to get obortion restricted or outlawed.
Step 3, when you have 3/4 of the states on board, THEN you go for a Constitutional Right to Life Amendment.
At step 2, you start saving lives.
If you go for step 3 right off, you’re tilting at windmills.
The news article posted by the chronic-Fred-basher was from the mid-90’s.
Fred is strongly pro-life. No if, ands, or buts, about it.
It’s 10:00, here comes the Little Fred Wagon. $10 is all he asks.

Or, do you only have the some other candidate’s talking points for reference?
Shame on you, for the Lord’s sake. I’ll pray that your spirit be sweetened.
What a man DOES is far more important than what he says. I'm amazed you'd try to split that particular hair about a man with a 100% pro-life voting record.

So if you support overturning Roe v. Wade, but don't support a consitutional amendment, then you are a "pro-choice defender"?
Thanks for showing us another example of the misrepresentation of Fred in the media.
“Mr. Thompson wouldn’t say whether a first-place finish in Saturday’s primary was necessary for him to continue his quest for the Republican nomination.”
It’s wise for him to demur from the expectations games.
However, if he takes 2nd, he gets to continue to play, and is in good shape for Feb 5 and Feb 12. For those dates, he will have to use his resources wisely, to maximize his results where he has a fighting chance, even if it means giving up entirely where he’s particularly weak.
Even if he’s a relatively close 3rd, he gets to go on and still has a realistic chance at the nomination, especially if no front runner emerges.
Remember, a majority of the delegates will be chosen by Feb 12. If no one has something closing in on 35% or 40%, there is a substantial chance that there will be something akin to a brokered convention (although I don’t know that it will look like the brokered conventions of the storied past). In the case of the party coming together to find an acceptable candidate, there will be two critieria: 1) someone who did respectably in the primaries and caucuses, and 2) someone who is broadly acceptable to most or all of the conservative factions of the party.
If Mr. Thompson does moderately-well in the next few weeks, and no real front-runner emerges, he might be the man.
He's using drive by media tactics.
Waltz into a thread and throw around a bunch of quotes out of context and then refuse to back them up with a response. Typical tabloid m.o. from another defender of big government RINOs.
We do split hairs and call them logs, don’t we?
I know good men and women who have been pro-life, except for rape and incest. They just can’t get around this point, without teaching. And yet, I got emails from pro-life activist groups saying, “South Dakota legislature endorses unlimited early abortion by the morning after pill and abortion in cases of rape and incest” when that State passed the strictest ban I’ve ever seen, one that has been tied up in the courts, ever since.
I received e-mails saying that Texas law allows parents to abort their grandchildren when we were able to pass the parental notification and then, despite resistance from some of the pro-life activists because “the law allows mothers and doctors to abort babies,” and “it would allow parents to choose to abort their grandchildren,” we were able to pass the prenatal protection act and parental consent laws.
That was plagiarism - theft of the work of an author and a publication - from a 1996 article - note the “San Diego conventio.”.
