The question was posed to me last night, if the only two conservatives in the race were to drop out, leaving the hapless RINOs Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee and McCain to ward off the Evil Witch of the East then, Jim, what do we do?
Well, I think four issues that most of us conservatives will agree on that are at the top or near the top of our priority lists are National Defense, Border Security, Guns and Life should be considered. We can argue all day long on whether or not these guys are constitutionally minded, small government fiscal conservatives, and I don't believe any of them are, but we'll leave that for another day. Let's concentrate on National Defense, Border Security, Guns and Life.
Well, I can see right off that that rules out Rudy, the draft dodging, gun grabbing, sanctuary city abortionist. At least the other three claim to be pro-life, although Romney has been a pro-choice abortionist for all of his elected history until he decided to run for president. I think Romney's pro choice, big government nanny state (RomneyCare) record gives him two big black eyes and should knock him out of any further consideration. That leaves Huckabee and McCain.
Now, all four of these guys are terrible on border security even though they're all claiming now to be border hawks. McCain led the charge for amnesty and the rest fell in line like dutiful RINO troopers. Can't really make a distinction among these guys on the border issue. All fail, though I think most conservatives would rank McCain at or near the bottom.
Guns. Rudy's definitely out. McCain's out. Romney's not much better. Guess Huckabee the big duck hunter outshoots the others in this category.
Rudy fails in all categories, McCain and Romney fail on guns, and all fail on borders. So I guess Huckabee has more to offer over the others at this point as he is at least pro-life and pro-gun.
Now comes national defense. Sorry, but I can't see the draft dodging, gun grabbing, gay loving, cross-dressing, illegal alien pandering abortion activist Rudy Giuliani as a very appealing or effective guy to head up our military, even if he did make some rousing anti-terrorist speeches on 9/11. The "gays should be allowed to serve openly in the military" Romney (no military or national security experience that I know of) doesn't give me goosebumps either.
So, again, we're down to Huckabee and McCain. Now you all know that I like Huckabee as he is a likable fellow, and I hate McCain, but wait. If the whole shebang is going to be decided on which of the still standing Republican wannabes should defend America from the terrorists and the surrendering Democrats, I think I'll have to go with McCain over Huckabee. At least McCain served in the military and has a whole lot more military and national security experience while serving on various committees in the senate than does Huckabee. Huckabee has none. And I doubt Huckabee can defeat Hillary. But then, McCain probably won't either, so guess that leaves plan B. Squat down, tuck your head down between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.
Here's praying that the only two all around consistently reliable conservatives hang in there and one of them gets the nod.
Go Hunter!! Go, FRed, GO!!
The only thing we can do is to give all we can to Fred. I was giving a little at a time to have some I could give later but I scratched that plan. I and my wife are giving all we can right now to try and push Fred back to the top. There’s only 2 people in this race I can vote for and Fred is the only one with a chance.
Giuliani, Huckabee, McCain are all fervent compassionate conservatives. I’d *really* like to avoid four or eight more years of that if possible. Romney is almost one, but he talks tough on immigration and let’s face it - he’s been the only guy to call McCain out on that.
Sorry but, if Thompson, Hunter, or even Romney don’t make it to Super Special Awesome Tuesday, I *will* vote for Ron Paul just to stick it to compassionate conservatism. The merging of the parties is unacceptable.
I am stunned once again. I guess this explains why FR doesn’t have McCain Truth Files or Huck Truth Files.
It just astounds me that FR might throw its support behind someone like McCain who won’t even make a promise on our issues. He just spits in your eye and tells you to f-off.
If someone is campaigning as a conservative, there is a least a chance he would govern as a conservative—even if there are some flaws in his past. If someone is campaigning as a liberal and has always been a liberal, you’re smokin’ something if you think he is going to be conservative—especially with a liberal MSM kiss-up record like McCain’s.
And that’s not to mention the character flaws. Which brings me to Huck . . .
As I see it FR has been a big part (that may give it too much credit) of the disintegration of the conservative movement. This personal pettiness is just senseless.
LOL!
MCain? Unbelievable.
Apply the index finger and thumb to opposite sides of the exterior of the nose. Squeeze gently until the stink subsides and, using the opposite hand, mark your ballot for the candidate with the “R” next to his/her name.
This may cause some short term discomfort, dizziness or shortness of breath, but may enable us to live to fight another day.
The RINOs have let us down, there’s no question. It may be the best use of a Republican, right now, is as an obsructionist. I think our best strategy at this point is to take them out on a case-by-case basis and replace them over time. The alternative is grim.
We get behind whoever is nominated..end of story. There was a story about Reagan. When there was a candidate that was elected that was’nt just so, Reagan would tell everyone that thats the person we back, because the alternative is not whats wanted.
Right now I would bet that McCain will get it. Of course that can change (I hope) and if McCain does get it I look for him to take a REAL conservative for a running mate to get some support from REAL conservatives. And I believe that would be Fred or Hunter.
We let the likes of any of the socialists in and we’ll be in for a real time and I believe a real dandy war near the end of the term. They’ll gut the military, raise taxes which will collapse an already shakey economy and look to see some real dandy socialist programs put in no matter how bad the economy is.
So whats the choice?
Vote for no one. I won’t compromise my principles, hold my nose, and vote for the lesser of two socialists.
It’s like deciding whether you want to drive off a cliff at 60 mph or 90mph - either way, we’re going over the cliff.
Vote for Mc Cain. He is better than Hillary or Obama.
But what we really need to worry about is getting more seats in both houses.
I won’t vote this time around except for state and local elections.
As long as we keep voting for the liberal Republican( as though conservative principles no longer matter), we will keep getting a liberal Republican. These candidates, other than Hunter and Fred, just make me too ill.
Probably by letting those principles slip away in small increments by voting for RINOs, we have damaged conservatism as we have known it. We have learned that we never get our way when we compromise values. We just get passed by.
I get the impression that the new book on conservatism has been written for the GOP. Appears to be a take it or leave it situation.
If Fred and Hunter are out, I'd have to agree.
DRINK, and BLOAT.
The fraudulent four vs. Hillary?
What’s the difference?
KOS and “Black Leaders’ in Michigan are urging thier followers to vote on the Republican side, and to vote for McCain....
If THAT deosn’t tell you something, NOTHING WILL..
and I am afraid McCain would have to be my (gulp) choice as well. I cannot forgive Huckabee for dissing the Commander-in-Chief.
In favor of Hillary Lite? No thanks. Better a bullet in the head than the Death of a Thousand Cuts.
Where are the Conservatives this year? Surely they can’t all be jumping on the Huckster’s bandwagon.
Fred Thompson gets 1% of the vote in New Hampshire? Good Grief Charlie Brown, I’ve got that many conservatives in my subdivision here in Texas.
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!?!
If the final choices are truly between a socialistic R and a socialistic D, then socialism wins every time! Conservatism is slowly dying in the U.S., and too many people throughout the U.S. don’t even know about this yet! A U.S. long-term “mess” is truly just around the corner. A Democratic takeover of everything important, starting in January ‘09, will finish off all conservatism with the enactment of “The Fairness Doctrine” legislation, and endless waves of illegal immigrants will also be coming to the U.S. to take full advantage of newly created amnesty legislation including newly created legislation which will allow illegal immigrants to legally vote in all future U.S. elections throughout the U.S.!
You really don't get it, do you.
This post (not yours, from JimRob) just confirms how weak the GOP field is.
Both Hillary & Obama have raised over $100 million last year. How much have Rudy, Romney, McCain, Thompson, and Huckabee raised?
Democrat primary voters are beating the Republican voters more than 2-1.
There's a serious dilemma here that will do the GOP in come November:
- They have completely abandoned traditional conservatism in favor of authoritarian statism & sell-out to big corporations
- Most Americans, unfortunately, oppose the war
- The Republican candidates besides Paul aren't addressing the weak dollar and inflation
Without the libertarians and independents, the GOP is going to lose in Reagan/Mondale proportions.
