TRENTON, N.J.New Jersey is close to entering a compact that would eliminate the power of the Electoral College to choose a president if enough states endorse the idea. The state Senate voted Thursday to approve delivering the state's 15 electoral votes for president to the winner of the national popular vote. The Assembly approved the measure in December and needs Gov. Jon S. Corzine's signature to become law.
"The bill is subject to a thorough review, but Gov. Corzine has long been a supporter of this concept," Corzine spokesman Jim Gardner said.
The measure could result in the electoral votes going to a candidate opposed by voters in New Jersey, which has backed Democratic presidential candidates since 1988.
The compact would take effect only if enough statesthose with a majority of votes in the Electoral Collegeagreed to it. A candidate needs 270 of 538 electoral votes to win.

If NJ did this, we would effectively have have had four districts go for Bush (The NW portion of the state and the Shore region).
The other problem with this, of course, is that right now I only have to worry about vote fraud in Newark and Camden cancelling out my vote. If this sails through, some idiot multiple dead voter in Cook County, Illinois will be able to cancel out my vote. That is just not acceptable.
If enough states keep messing with the presidential electoral process, the electoral college system may finally go away and “We the People” can take true control over the presidential election process. You don’t criticize possible change based on who would have won in the past or which party might benefit more in the future. You correct the system based on common sense and integrity. As for me, I am tired of the bigger states having a bigger say when it comes to presidential elections. If we are truly a government of the people, by the people and for the people, then the voice of the people should be the final word.

No State shall, without the Consent of the Congress, lay any Imposts or Duties on Imports or Exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing it's inspection Laws: and the net Produce of all Duties and Imposts, laid by any State on Imports or Exports, shall be for the Use of the Treasury of the United States; and all such Laws shall be subject to the Revision and Controul of the Congress.

Huh?
Let me understand this new Jersey, I can vote in your election, but you can’t vote in mine? I like it. I really like it.
Sigh...you had your history and civics education in a public school. Right?
I have been through many presidential elections and an attempt to revoke the EC is a given every election cycle. Aint gonna happen.
And how would what you are suggesting change that?
Problem is in these liberal states and corrupt cities one man= DOZENS of fraudulent democrat votes. If there was some kind of way to make sure there was only one vote per person, the repubs would win national landslides every time.
Actually it is just the opposite
California had ONE electoral vote per every 650,000 people (55 EV, 36 mil pop), Alaska has ONE electoral vote per every 220,000 people (3 EV, 600,000 pop.)
THis will last only as long as they think it will help elect democRATS. When it elects a Republican...then it will be a different story, about how it’s unfair, rigged, etc, etc, etc.
The prime example of this nonsense is the now famous butterfly ballot from Florida 2000. The democRATS created and approved that ballot form, and used it to try and steal the election.
New Jersey is not eliminating the power of the Electoral College.
It is merely making New Jersey issues irrelevant to the outcome of the Presidential election.
Go ahead and sign, and influence the election not a bit, and undermine New Jersey’s role in the election more than it already is.
After all, NJ is not exactly a “swing State.”
That already passed here in Maryland. U.S. Army Retired |
I think to what the original poster is referring is that Congress must approve such a compact.
After all that has happened since 2000, you still do not understand what power the Electoral College gives to the smaller states?
