Battle Over Possible Euthanasia of New York Teenager Gets Pro-Life Attention
Life News ^ | 1/1/08 | Steven Ertelt

Bronx, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The battle over the life and death of a teenage girl in New York has drawn the attention of pro-life advocates in recent days. The fight to save Javona Peters reminds some of the struggle of the Schindler family in Florida to save the life of Terri Schiavo, a beloved daughter and sibling whose former husband eventually took her life.

In this case, Peters' parents are disagreeing on whether or not to remove her feeding tube and take her life.

Peters fell into a coma in October while she had a routine medical procedure at Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors have pegged her as being in a persistent vegetative state, a medical diagnosis pro-life advocates dispute because so many patients have partially or fully recovered.

Peters' parents were never married and are estranged and have considered a medical malpractice suit against the hospital, according to a New York Daily News report.

But Janet Joseph and Leonard Peters are also feuding over Peters' care and have each filed separate requests to be given custody of their daughter. Peters has been opposed to removing the feeding tube but has wavered recently.

Edward Gersowitz, an attorney for Joseph, told the newspaper that "Because of her condition, she cannot make decisions for herself, and the court will have to appoint a guardian to make decisions for her."

As a teen, Peters doesn't have a living will or some other advanced directive providing guidelines for the type of medical treatment, or withdrawal, she favors.

The case has drawn the attention of the Schindler family, which sent out a notice about the case from its foundation, which helps disabled patients receive legal help and appropriate medical care.

Leading bioethics watchdog Wesley J. Smith has also commented on it and he says the PVS diagnosis seems "rushed" to him.

Smith says he sympathizes with the father and the pressure he is under to take Peters' life.

"We know that too often medical teams and social workers pressure and cajole for such outcomes," he said.

Smith draws comparisons to the case of Haleigh Poutre, a Massachusetts girl whom LifeNews.com reported was also declared PVS, but who has recovered from the abuse she suffered.

In that case, state government officials had ordered her feeding tube removed but she recovered from the PVS state shortly beforehand.

A guardian needs to act in the best interests of the child and NO child's best interest include being killed.

God help this poor girl.

Parents divorced and arguing over her. Lawsuit against the hospital in the wind. Some trial lawyer is going to see big money in suing the hospital, and will hook up with one of the parents. The primary motivator will probably be the lawsuit money and not the child’s welfare, just as it was with Terri Schiavo’s greedy husband.

The faster she dies, the faster someone can get rich.

A coma from a "routine medical procedure?"

In America today, abortions are routine medical procedures, and there are many more problems and "complications" than those who support legalized abortion will admit. I wonder if her coma came while she was having an abortion.

Just a thought......

As for the girl and her parents, prayers for a full and complete recovery - and that this tragedy reunites the parents.

From a legal standpoint this may not be the "cash cow" you might think it is. If the parents are not on good terms there will be an enormous amount of time and money spent in court just to figure out which of the two has the legal standing to file any kind of lawsuit in the case.

If my memory is accurate, a major lawsuit in the infamous Amadou Diallo case in New York City is still being held up for this very reason.

I immediately thought of abortion as the “routine medical procedure,” too. Under New York State law, no statistics are collected on abortion-related maternal deaths and medical complications, by the way. Abortionists have been very successful in suppressing all information about this “routine medical procedure.”

Poor girl. On top of that, it sounds as if her parents have dollar signs in their eyes, more than anything else. As did Michael Schiavo, of course.

Bobby Schindler to speak...

..........................

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — Was the government right to get involved in Terri Schiavo’s death? Did the court overstep its bounds when it ordered the disabled 41-year-old woman’s feeding tube removed? Will the debate over euthanasia be a factor in the upcoming election?

These are some of the questions Chris Mitchell, president of the Florida Chautauqua Center, hopes Bobby Schindler, Schiavo’s brother, will answer at the 13th Annual Florida Chautauqua Assembly.

Schindler opens the assembly with a keynote speech at 10 a.m. Jan. 31 at First United Methodist Church in DeFuiak Springs. The assembly’s apt theme this year is “A Journey into the American Presidency.”

Mitchell said he wants the assembly to educate voters........................

Since they didn’t say what the “routine medical procedure” was, and since abortion is now a routine medical procedure, it’s a safe bet to think that that’s what was done.

Haleigh Poutre is still alive after Massachusetts DSS tried to kill her and failed. But her condition is still not clear this long time after, as DSS considers her their private property shielded from the eyes of the public. But this is about Jocelyn Ward, another victim in that state, along with Dontel Jeffers and Rebecca Riley. Perhaps under the new leadership things will get better for the poor kids.

.......................

Jennifer Ward, charged with first-degree murder in the shaking death of her 9-month-old daughter, is set to appear for a bail hearing in Salem Superior Court today.

Hopefully, the appearance by the 37-year-old Peabody resident will lead to more details about the Nov. 21 death of Jocelyn Ward Anderson, and how the state Department of Social Services handled her case.

So far, there has been little helpful information on that account. We do know, according to an agency spokesman, that until her death, DSS considered the girl's case "a success story."

There are many unanswered questions:

* Jennifer Ward was allowed to take her daughter home from the hospital after the Feb. 22 birth despite the fact both had illegal drugs in their system. (This contradicts an earlier statement by the DSS that the agency took the baby into custody after the birth.) Is it common practice to allow newborns to go home when they and their mother have drugs in their system?

* The infant was taken from Ward late the next month by DSS, which was responding to a complaint of neglect. She was returned in July, after Ward went through drug treatment and a parenting education program. Is a little more than three months enough time to deal with problems of drug abuse and neglect?

* Did the agency continue to monitor Ward after July and, if so, how closely was she monitored?................................

At a different point on the spectrum of pro life, wagglebee has this thread...

LONDON, January 2, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Following a UK Parliamentary question, data from a government organization showed that over one million human embryonic children were killed in the UK in the past 14 years as 'waste' embryos from in vitro fertilization (IVF) processes.

The acquired data showed that 2,137,924 embryonic humans were created using IVF between 1991 and 2005, but about 1.2m were never used. Scientists killed the embryos who were not deemed strong enough for implantation, and froze those not considered 'waste' embryos. Those that survived the freezing process will die in ten years if not implanted................
