The McCain Scenario
The New York Obsever ^ | December 18, 2008 | Steve Kornacki

John McCain’s campaign was left gasping for breath this summer, when the Arizonan seemed to run out of money, support and hope.

Since then, the opening has been there for any of the other Republican candidates to put Mr. McCain—this contest’s initial front-runner—out of his misery.

But here we are, just weeks before the first primary votes will be cast, and Mr. McCain has slowly nursed his way back to relevance and a plausible, if not likely, nomination scenario.

It’s a turn of events that says as much about Mr. McCain’s rivals, each of whom seem to be equipped with at least one breakout-killing flaw, as it does Mr. McCain himself.

Rudy Giuliani remains the default choice of the casual Republican voter, the leader in national polls and in most of the big-state contests that will come later in the nominating process.

The McCain-Kennedy Illegal Alien Amnesty Bill disqualifies this old clown from further consideration.

Same here. McCain has said he talked to Kerry for an entire WEEK about the VP slot, with several phone conversations.

The fact he didn’t tell him ‘get the hell outta here!’ immediately, after he finished LAUGHING AT HIM is the tale of the tape.

No to McCain, never! He has been the anti-Republican for too long, and now he wants the conservatives to love and adore him. After the “Gang of 14”? Please....

He’s below the White Hype from Hope in my opinion.

McCain invited Kerry to his "ranch" at Cornville. Kerry stayed several days (there was a Freep on the road above the "ranch"). McCain listened to the offer which included unprecidented power over all things military, literally a co-Presidency but dismissed it saying simply "I am a Republican". This account was verified to me privately by a McCain staffer.

Over the years I have had a contentious relationship with the Senator and his office but I believe this account to be true. McCain heard Kerry out but the outcome was never in doubt.
