John McCains campaign was left gasping for breath this summer, when the Arizonan seemed to run out of money, support and hope.
Since then, the opening has been there for any of the other Republican candidates to put Mr. McCainthis contests initial front-runnerout of his misery.
But here we are, just weeks before the first primary votes will be cast, and Mr. McCain has slowly nursed his way back to relevance and a plausible, if not likely, nomination scenario.
Its a turn of events that says as much about Mr. McCains rivals, each of whom seem to be equipped with at least one breakout-killing flaw, as it does Mr. McCain himself.
Rudy Giuliani remains the default choice of the casual Republican voter, the leader in national polls and in most of the big-state contests that will come later in the nominating process.

Same here. McCain has said he talked to Kerry for an entire WEEK about the VP slot, with several phone conversations.
The fact he didn’t tell him ‘get the hell outta here!’ immediately, after he finished LAUGHING AT HIM is the tale of the tape.
He’s below the White Hype from Hope in my opinion.
Over the years I have had a contentious relationship with the Senator and his office but I believe this account to be true. McCain heard Kerry out but the outcome was never in doubt.
