None of the above (Brokered Convention for GOP?)
Washington Times ^ | December.19, 2007 | Tony Blankley

The Republican Party primary has so far been an exercise in none of the above. In their turns John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney seemed to be or seemed about to be frontrunners — only to fall back as the party's likely voters got a sharper look at each of them. Even my old boss Newt Gingrich, without even announcing, had a handsome surge from 4-5 percent to 18-20 percent in February — before falling back to single digits.

Oh, come on: you’re not blaming Ford in ‘76 on a divisive primary? There was was a divisive primary because Ford was the most hated man in the world.

Jerry Ford lost because he was as liberal as the man who replaced him. The Conservatives saw that and stayed home. A wiser man four years later understood what conservatives wanted and built his campaign on that foundation. He did it with the help of an unseen before strong Conservative Grass Roots organization that won him two party backing. That was what made Reagan a successful legacy. But even after loosing Ford still would not listen and gave Bush some advice that nearly cost him the 2000 election in dealing with Conservatives that being "where else can they go" Bush found out they can stay home or vote third party instead. Ford was by no means a bright president.

You’re right.

Bob Dole polled far better during his run than Fred does now.

Dole was a better campaigner and debater than Fred and has a more distinguished war record.

And Dole got trounced.

Fred is a disappointment.

I disagree with your assessment of Fred. I think he is a natural leader and the Senate wasn't his thing. People like McCain are great Senators because they love to compromise. I think a great leader would find the Senate unworkable, like a truly brilliant mind would view college.

For the sake of argument, do you think Reagan would have done well in the Senate? I view the Senate as a bunch of self important, compromising fools for the most part who think they are one step away from the White House because they won a state wide election.

The more I see in 2007, the more I realize how much I will miss George W. Bush.

Not 100% right all the time. But darned close. He’s been a blessing to this country.

We gripe about no Ronald Reagans in this bunch. Folks, there’s not even a W in this bunch.

All I care about this cycle is stopping the Democrats. That is all we can hope for.

In some ways I agree with this sentiment, in others I don't. I think we have a shot of getting someone who's not a big spender. Bush is kind of big spenders. I'm tired of Bush.

McCain is one of the main reasons the GOP senate is so @@@@@@ ineffective in holding the line against liberals. That man has been a disaster to anything conservative. All he's done is be Bush's usefull idiot for all his DEM based ideas and John McCain helped him do it. If the senate wasn't Freds thing then why did he run a second term? Why did he allow the Committe Hearings to be taken over by John Glenn and not simply tell the SML you need another chairman as this is not my thing?

Reagan in the senate? I think he would have been a thorn in the flesh of every chair warming Rockefeller Republican holding a seat there. Thankfully two of them are resigning. One left yesterday a good day for America. The other one Warner likely has visions of a Sec of Defense position with Fred if elected and then you will see just how bad it can really get.

If the senate is a bunch of self important, compromising fools for the most part {I agree to a large extent on that} then why elect them as POTUS especially when they can't even run that office right?

It is a Democratic bloodbath as well.

Hillary has attacked Obama with the drug use issue, and now Edwards has a "love child" rumor floating, courtesy of the Clinton cabal.

The coronation is on schedule.

Well Romney would be the only other choice and he was once a liberal. Fred left the Senate, and for good reason. I would expect a McCain Sec Def if Fred was elected. I think that would be ok for starters, he had the Iraq surge right. I would hope he had a Hunter VP slot but I wouldn’t be surprised if he picked a guy like Haley Barbour.

A “brokered convention?”

Who would be the brokers? Nope, the primaries will decide it.

If you want to compare someone to Bob Dole I think McCain would be more appropriate.

Concur on McCain being a better candidate comparison.

I remember the same warm and fuzzy feelings conservatives had for Dole (a lot of it was backlash for the liberal policies of GHW Bush, IIRC).

Its very similar to the way people on FR nowadays try to read every little Fred-ism as an indication that his rise to prominence is immanent.

At least the Duncan Hunter crowd is realistic about their chances. Heck... even the Paulites have reasonable expectations.

Look, I don’t know who I like. I just know that Hillary Must Be Stopped. I’ll vote for whoever can do that.

Fred was just barely hanging on to his seat when he retired. He likely would not have been elected another term.

You've got to be kidding. He won that seat twice by landslides and he could have easily won a third term.

Romney still is a Liberal. You can't give a pig a bath, paint it's nails, put a ribbon on it and make it a poodle. It's still a pig.

Hunter would be a much better Sec of Def and more usefull than VP. But between Rudy, Fred, Mitt, and McCain he would be the POTUS most aligned to Reagan which is what we need. McCain needs to join Lott and Warner in the private sector hopefully to never hold public office again elected or otherwise much less hold any position on national policy.

Hunter is the only one running POTUS wise with even a slightest a clue as to how bad off our military really is and addresses the issue. Four more years of Bush/Clinton/Bush defense policies and you will see a collapse in such programs as the National Guards and Reserves and quite possibly even active military. Lip service does not resolve problems that have been ongoiung since Poppy and Sec of Def Cheney made a mess of things. We need a leader who understands it's about our troops needs and our own national defenses and not about the contractors payments for services maybe or maybe not rendered.

If we have a floor fight, can hundreds of Freepers storm the convention and clean out the RINOs? I’d be there.

I'm not kidding Fred was in trouble back here and he knew it. Oh how short some Freepers memories are. Fred was loathed after the senate trial vote. Before his second term Fred was a legend in Tennessee especially in his first term {a special election}and before that for bringing down Blanton. His second term was an easy win. His second term is where Fred began to fall apart. The DEMs were ready to take him on and he knew it.

Fred says that he left the senate because his daughter died. Are you saying that he is lying and that his real reason was fear of the “DEMs ready to take him on.”
