I was looking at a Hillary thread today, which said that if she won the nomination, a lot of Democrats would abandon the Democrat Party. It reminded me of when I finally left the Democrats and "turned to the Dark Side", as my family says. It struck me that FReepers must have a lot of interesting stories about how they came to be here, and that these stories should be told.
Please post your testimony below. I'll start...
It sure is a fun club here on earth too!
The problem, of course, is that the Republicans have adopted the Democrat strategy of buying our votes using our own money. The way to end that is to stop voting for politicians who give away our money, even if it is going to us.
If you have ever applauded when your Representative brings home a Federal highway project or flood control money, you are just as guilty as the Representative. If you have ever voted for a candidate because he promised to protect or expand a particular program that you happen to benefit from, you cannot object when he and all his buddied vote to expand some other program as well.
We have to insist on candidates who will reduce spending, reduce taxes, and reduce the scope of government. Then all these other problems will go away.
Republican since I registered to vote when I turned 18 years of age. More importantly, Conservative as far as I can remember when I knew the difference between right and wrong and chose to do right.
As bad as any Republican Presidential nominee is, their nominee will be worse.
Cotton Mather was a bigoted Harvard Professor and ordained minister, NOT a political party.
The answer to your question: prior to Andrew Jackson there was no “Democrat” party, and AJ is the reason my family became anti-democrat.
Well, that is the right attitude, I have to say. I assailed my Republican Representative when he had a town meeting to brag about how he brought a multi-Million dollar flood control project to our town. I am happy to note that he has decided not to run again, but I am not so delusional to think it is because of me.
Although I’m not registered GOP I’ve voted GOP since Nixon.
I have voted 99% GOP since but will never register GOP as I fear the radical elements of both parties, the dems more so.
It’s going to be tough voting once again GOP in 2008. I’m convinced the GOP has a death wish and are incapable of listening to the people.
I guess I first became a Democrat by default, growing up in a union-worker, Roman Catholic family. My parents absolutely worshipped JFK (they still do). I don’t even think I knew too much about the differences between the parties when I registered to vote, I just went with what my family was.
After I got married, and my husband would ask me about why I was a Democrat, why I didn’t switch to his party (Republican), and I would tease him that I had to stay and cancel out his vote. But, more and more, as I studied the candidates and issues, I would vote Republican more often than not. I guess I always felt that it really didn’t matter what “party” you belonged to, just how you voted that counted.
I was a Democrat when I joined, here, but a true Democrat-In-Name-Only, and a Reagan Democrat. That was the genesis of my name. I had lurked for quite a while, but signed up during those long, evil days of the 2000 Florida aftermath, sick in my heart at what the rat’s were trying to do to this country.
After 9/11, on top of the cesspool that was the Clinton administration, I realized I couldn’t, in good conscience, be connected in any way to the Democrat party. I was walking around our annual Street Faire and came across the Republican Women’s booth, and filled out the paperwork to switch parties. I was in good company, the woman volunteering at the booth said they had already had over a hundred others switching from Democrat to Republican at her booth today!!!
I wonder how many other women are out there, like I was. Registered as a democrat, but not one really where it counts, in your heart. DINO’s, I guess. Who knows???
Welcome aboard!!! If we hang together, we’ll keep beating back the libs!!!
They are not the same! Even the RINO's are supporting the troops. I don't like them, but hellary annd obama hussein will get us ALL killed.
Quit listening to the pessimists. We have every reason to prevail. We have the truth on our side.
For instance, in this election, there should be four major issues--all Republican issues.
Do you agree that it is Democrats who are responsible for our sky-high energy prices? They stand in the way of every attempt to drill for, or refine more of our own oil and also prevent us from building nukes which can supply low-cost electricity.
Do you want a lib in charge of your security? I don't. These RAT Democrats are doing everything they can to protect and aid terrorists. They are not on our side.
How about the economy? Only a moron would say that the Bush tax cuts were not beneficial to our economy and what do the RATS want to do? They want to raise taxes. Guess what that will do to our economy?
Most of the country want the borders closed to illegal immigrants while it is Democrats who want as much illegal immigration they can get. They need all these illegals to help keep them in power. Each new illegal is a potential vote. Ooops, the way Democrats steal elections, each illegal may give them more than one vote. It's our job to make the ignorant public aware of these vital issues. We win, they lose!!
I was raised in a Democrat voting family, joined the Navy, voted for JFK, have been voting Republican since. However, I am more apt to vote for the best candidate - which has always been Republican in my view.
No, its a great example of what happens when the GOP abandons its principles and people calling on others to do same.
Still not sure I want to be a Republican but, given the choices.....
Mom is still a big Lib however (Pop is a solid Conservative)
I came to the US from Germany in May of 1974. I had no political interests whatssoever. Watched the Nixon Watergate mess and could not figure out what the big deal was. We lived in Colorado Springs at the time and I got two newspapers, one liberal, one conservative. After a while the conservative paper made more sense.
When Carter ran, my husband voted for him. I told him that he made a big mistake, just my gut feelings. Husband saw the light after the hostages were taken. He became a Republican, voted for Reagan. I could not vote until 1984 and it’s been for Republicans ever since.
Became a Republican right after Nixon resigned
Became a Libertarian after listening to Jack Kemp
vice president debate
When I became a believeing Christian, I found I could not support anyone who identified with the dims. For so many reasons.
