LOWELL, Mass. -- A local dog owner is devastated after her dog was shot and killed.
Michelle Verville was walking her dog, Smokey, in the Lowell-Dracut State Forest last week when she heard a gun shot. Smokey, a 4-year-old Labrador retriever, yelped and Verville noticed that her dog had been shot in the stomach.
"I just stayed there with him and told him that it was ok, and that we loved him and that he was a good dog, and then he passed," Verville said.
it is legal to hunt for deer in State parks from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8.
According to Verville, shortly after Smokey was shot a hunter came out of the woods, where it is legal to hunt for deer in State Parks from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8. The man claimed that he did not shoot the dog and left without trying to help the fatally injured canine.
State Environmental Police are investigating the incident.
First Dick Cheney... Now Duncan Hunter... Doh....
Or the guys that shoot at ‘white flags’.
As in “I saw the bucks white flag and shot it!”
That is the foremost cause of ‘dead hunteritus’ in my area, followed closely by ‘brush’ and ‘sound’ shots.
Double pay for hours ‘worked’ over the ‘norm’.
Yup.
In my opinion, NO! Always know your target. That dog was shot on purpose, had the shooter thought it was a deer he would have gone to check it out.......
The owners have, but the police never caught anyone. I heard gunshots out there the first day of hunting season.
How do you know it wasn't on a leash? And in any case, that hunter denied shooting the dog so that kind of excuse won't fly for him.
Are you serious,,
In other news,,:” Bigfoot spotted in South Alabama on Geneva/Dale County line area””..Killing cattle ,caught on infrared ...Really folks it’s local news..
Deer Season here until 31 Jan.,maybe we’ll tag one..
That fits.
(Also suits the guys who’d be investigating the “L.L. Bean hunters..”)
Handsome animal. I can’t tell the diff between a Weimer and Vis...
ive never heard of that department.

Game wardens and forest rangers with guns. When I googled it, a lot of links seemed to be over a recent hulabaloo about them not being allowed to carry their guns in court, which made it seem like they weren't real cops < snicker >.
I'm sorry but I laughed at this. Where I lived in the 80's, we had a neighbor with a tree farm. It was posted. Two fools who hadn't "bagged" anything started shooting at this 70 yr old womans barn, trying to shoot off the electric lines. No. We never figured out why. She called the police and they refused to come out because the "hunters have guns". So Mable got hers. She also got their dog to come to her and after returning fire told the 2 doofuses to come back in daylight to get their dog. They were shooting at her barn in dusk..................and she was in the barn at the time.
Where in the story does it say the dog WAS on a leash? Sheese....
I grew up in upstate NY. Dog owners there are well aware that their dogs must not in any circumstances chase deer. It is legal there to take a dog down that’s chasing deer.
Maybe he denied shooting the dog because he didn’t shoot the dog....I would guess there were any number of people with firearms in the woods that day.
That’s the new name in a lot of states for Game Wardens. With the word police in their title, they can now act like any other police agency...tickets, etc., not jus hunting related offenses.
Saving that one.
