Scientists Protest Efforts To Give Indian Tribes Control Over Ancient Man's Remains

Scientists protest efforts to give Indian tribes control over ancient man's remains

The Associated Press
Published: November 30, 2007

WASHINGTON: Scientists hoping to study the ancient skeleton known as Kennewick Man are protesting efforts on two fronts that they say could block them from examining one of the oldest and most complete set of bones ever found in North America.

For a third time in four years, the scientists are opposing a bill in the U.S. Senate that would allow federally recognized American Indian tribes to claim ancient remains even if they cannot prove a link to a current tribe.

They also are contesting draft regulations issued by the Bush administration on the disposal of culturally unaffiliated remains.

Both measures could end up with the same result, scientists say: preventing an improved understanding of North American history and the role of the continent's first inhabitants.

If adopted, the proposed changes could "result in a world heritage disaster of unprecedented proportions" and "rob our descendants of the unique insights concerning the shared heritage of all people that physical anthropological studies of culturally unidentifiable human remains can provide," the American Association of Physical Anthropologists said in a statement.

Supporters of the legislation call such worries overblown. They say the changes are intended to clarify the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to ensure that federally recognized tribes can safeguard the graves of their ancestors.

Neither the Senate bill nor the draft regulations would affect the 9,300-year-old bones known as Kennewick Man, they said. The skeleton was discovered in 1996 along the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington, in the Northwestern United States and has been the focus of a bitter fight ever since.

The Indian tribes want to bury any evidence that they might not be the aboriginals they claim to be.

Liberals lyin’ again ! ! ! ! ! !

If the legislation would not effect scientists studying Kennewick Man, why have the nice Liberals been in court fighting the scientists?

As usual, the Liberals are so blatant in their lies they don’t realize their own behavior (lawsuits) disproves what they say.

May G*d rot lawyers.

Addendum to my first post:

I suspect most members of most tribes are not the scientific savages these suits about Kennewick Man make them appear. What we have here is the result of underemployed lawyers and a few “leaders” who want to grandstand to protect what they see an an Indian monopoly on casino based income.

If past behavior is any indication, the tribes, individuals and their leaders alike, should worry that some goober in some goobermint agency will decide to help themselves to both present tribal income and future casino based cash flows.

“White Man speak with forked tongue.” may not be true, but Agency Man and Lawyer Man most certainly do. Pity anyone caught between those two.

Lawyers and ‘crats both flock to cash like vultures to roadkill.

The Chinese got up to the same tricks when ancient Celts were discovered in Western China ( Riddle of the Desert Mummies, Discovery Channel).

Paradigm shifts are such a b*tch for institutions that have fixed ideas about things.

The Americas were likely widely populated by occidentals long before the oriental ancients. But that would detract from present day "aboriginal" land claims and ideologies associated with the assumption that they were "originals"Politics define fact. Wow! I am underwhelmed.

In China, the Celts and Chinese likely intermarried , thereby confounding the Chinese assumption of oriental racial purity descended from heaven , as the old myths say. That still has their shorts in a twist.

I hope our scientists stick to the truth and say that they can prove the remains are "pre-aboriginal." Therefore the law has no application to the remains. Or maybe they will be bought off with grant money.

Hsu's here first?

Naw, sorry, it was Paddy Maloney from Belfast!

"The court ruling said it's not clear" what should happen, "so Congress wants to clarify what its intent was, and its intent is that tribes that believe they have a connection (to ancient remains) either through descent or cultural affiliation, have an opportunity to make that case," said Barry Piatt, a Dorgan spokesman.

Key word here is “cultural affiliation” which has no real meaning so it can refer to whatever an attorney wants to claim.

...federally recognized tribes...

I see the White Man is still trying to tell us where we can live. Or not. They have to "federally" recognize us before they can give up "claim" to our bones? How does that make sense?

As an American Indian I just don’t understand why the tribes do not want this man checked out. I would think it interesting to see what they could find out about him. Maybe it would even benefit the tribe in some way. The second thing is, I guess I was wrong but I thought the scientist already won the right to look at him???

No matter what he is, why would the Indians not be aboriginals?

They did. Which is why somebody, somewhere pulled some strings to get this legislation introduced to try and stop it.

My guess is probably yet another injuction/court order/whatever has prevented them from investiaating in the meantime.

Sometimes I really hate these idiots with a passion.

That was exactly my understanding too. This article is a little confusing.
