The parents went in and successfully stalled the investigation via interviews in the media and criticism of local officials. It’s not difficult to see what happened, the cops basically took a vacation until the controversy died down and then went back to work on the case.

Authorities “ordered their renewed arrest because further investigation into the disappearance has led to new incriminating evidence,” the office said without providing further details. Officials there could not immediately be reached for further comment.
The brothers were expected to make an initial appearance in an Aruban court Friday, at which point prosecutors were expected to present the new evidence to a judge. A court date in the island had not yet been set for van der Sloot.
Wim de Bruin, a spokesman for the Dutch national prosecutor’s office, said van der Sloot could be sent to Aruba without an extradition hearing and the transfer would occur “within several days.”

I don’t think anything we said was directed to the family or the victim. It’s the incessant day in, night out coverage of a select few cases. What made this case or the little Ramsey girls’ case any different than the hundreds of other murdered or missing? What’s the obsession with these individuals? Is it because they were from families of means? Or in some way marketed to or by the various news media.
It was a tragedy for the families, but I’m sorry, these are not of national importance. It’s like the continual dredging up of Lady Di, don’t get me started on that.

A lot of we Americans are a mixture of a number of varied backgrounds. And we are proud of it and the intelligence as well as cosmopolitan variety that broad backgrounds provide. Much better than some of the inbred types seen in a variety of provincial settings.
