A strong statement from a Vietnam/Cold War Vet
Email | November 12, 2007 | Unknown

I know this has been posted before, but methinks it bears repeating. It was sent via an email to me and I've no idea who the author is.

President Bush did make a bad mistake in the war on terrorism. But the mistake was not his decision to go to war in Iraq. Bush's mistake came in his belief that this country is the same one his father fought for in WWII. It is not.

Back then, they had just come out of a vicious depression. The country was steeled by the hardship of that depression, but they still believed fervently in this country. They knew that the people had elected their leaders, so it was the people's duty to back those leaders.

Therefore, when the war broke out the people came together, rallied behind, and stuck with their leaders, whether they had voted for them or not or whether the war was going badly or not.And war was just as distasteful and the anguish just as great then as it is today. Often there were more casualties in one day in WWII than we have had in the entire Iraq war. But that did not matter. The people stuck with the President because it was their patriotic duty. Americans put aside their differences in WWII and worked together to win that war. Everyone from every strata of society, from young to old pitched in. Small children pulled little wagons around to gather scrap metal for the war effort. Grade school students saved their pennies to buy stamps for war bonds to help the effort. Men who were too old or medically 4F lied about their age or condition trying their best to join the military. Women doubled their work to keep things going at home. Harsh rationing of everything from gasoline to soap, to butter was imposed, yet there was very little complaining.

You never heard prominent people on the radio belittling the President. Interestingly enough in those days there were no fat cat actors and entertainers who ran off to visit and fawn over dictators of hostile countries and complain to them about our President. Instead, they made upbeat films and entertained our troops to help the troops' morale. And a bunch even enlisted. And imagine this: Teachers in schools actually started the day off with a Pledge of Allegiance, and with prayers for our country and our troops!

Back then, no newspaper would have dared point out certain weak spots in our cities where bombs could be set off to cause the maximum damage. No newspaper would have dared complain about what we were doing to catch spies. A newspaper would have been laughed out of existence if it had complained that German or Japanese soldiers were being "tortured" by being forced to wear women's and underwear, or subjected to interrogation by a woman, or being scared by a dog or did not have air conditioning.

A lot of things were different back then. We were not subjected to a constant bombardment of pornography, perversion and promiscuity in movies or on radio. We did not have legions of crackheads, dope pushers and armed gangs roaming our streets.

No, President Bush did not make a mistake in his handling of terrorism. He made the mistake of believing that we still had the courage and fortitude of our fathers. He believed that this was still the country that our fathers fought so dearly to preserve.

It is not the same country. It is now a cross between Sodom and Gomorra and the land of Oz. We did unite for a short while after 911, but our attitude changed when we found out that defending our country would require some sacrifices.

We are in great danger. The terrorists are fanatic Muslims. They believe that it is okay, even their duty, to kill anyone who will not convert to Islam. It has been estimated that about one-third or over three hundred million Muslims are sympathetic to the terrorists cause...Hitler and Tojo combined did not have nearly that many potential recruits.

So...we either win it - or lose it - and you ain't gonna like losing. America is not at war. The military is at war. America is at the mall.

Thank for the nice post.

Look at how the Republicans conducted themselves during WWII until the present day. Then look at how the Democrats conducted themselves during WWII until the present day.

That should make it crystal clear what has changed.

The democrats have fostered hatred for this nation amongst their followers. We pay a very heavy price for that today.

Bush's mistake came in his belief that this country is the same one his father fought for in WWII

President Bush is very aware of what has gone on since WWII. He is very well-versed in matters of history. He knows that the Cold War, Watergate, Vietnam, etc. nuclear freeze, abortion issues have transformed the country.

He is very aware that the left has taken over huge portions of US institutions since WWII. Contrary to what the MSM tells you, he is no dummy. He has succeeded in prosecuting the war toward victory in Iraq and even as we post a Dem congress is foundering and can't get its way on anything.

Sad but all too true. My grandfather utterly despised FDR and the foolish programs he initiated under the guise of alleviating the Great Depression’s impact. But, all of his sons and some of his daughters went off to war after 1941. OK, some of his sons were really to old to serve, I guess, since the eldest had been born in 1896, but all who were of the proper age did. His attitude toward Roosevelt didn’t interfere. “Politics stops at the water’s edge” is a thing of the past and we will all suffer for it.

You might want to read up on Charles Lindberg and his efforts to keep the US out of WWII.

We didn’t hear the cries of Torture because the US Government promised to follow the Geneva Conventions even though the Nazi’s and the Japs didn’t. Sure there were instances of US soldiers violating those rules, but they were the exception not the norm.

Finally, WWII was a real threat to our lives, Nazi Germany controlled mainland Europe, large parts of Africa. Japan took over almost all of Asia, drove the US and British out of their Pacific holdings. And successfully launched a full scale attack on a US Military Base.

What have the Islamofascist conquered? Nothing.

Unfortunately true. The Dems are trying to do the same thing to Iraqi veterans they did to the Vietnam vets.

The only wars the American people have supported since WWII are the ones that required no sacrifice to speak of, Iraq I, Panama and Barbados come to mind.

Actually if you ever get a chance to read some of the statements of Democrats during the Philippine insurrection at the beginning of the 20th Century you will find the same dislike for the military, the same focus on American war crimes and faults, and the same blatant use of the issue for political power. William Jennings Byron for example voted for the war then actively attacked the war he voted for.

Democrats only play nice when their Presidents conduct wars.

Thanks for the tip. Lyndon Johnson took it in the shorts so much so that he declined to run again. I always wondered if his cancer figured into the decision though.

Sorry... did you actually just try and insinuate that torture is part of the US’s SOP with regards to terrorists?

I think it is you who should reacquiant themselves with history. The purpose of the government is to protect civilians... this is why we have a military. Tell us how many American civilians were killed by the Japanese or the Germans, please. Now, tell us how many American civilians have been killed by Wahabist Islam.

If you think that fewer American lives are threatened now than during the Second World War, you are wrong. Nuclear technology, a science fiction tale to most of the world sixty five years ago, is now more readily available than ever. What will it take for a nuclear detonation in New York, LA... anywhere? Not much, save for us letting down our guard.

The last sentence says it all. I am still mad at the President and his stupid advisors for trying to “comfort” all us poor scared Americans by telling us, “It’s OK, go about you lives, we’ll take care of it.” COmplete patronizing BS! He should have gathered that anger and fear and made the Country come together instead of that government is your mommy BS.

What have the Islamofascist conquered? Nothing.

They had Afghanistan.

They almost had Iraq.

They're about to have Pakistan - with nukes.

Is the US ready to do in Pakistan what was done in Iraq & Afghanistan?
