Thompson talks of daughter who died

TAMPA, Fla. - Republican Fred Thompson sidestepped a question about the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case last month, saying he didn't remember the details. On Monday he said he's uncomfortable discussing it because of his own daughter's death.

"And this will probably be the last time I ever address it."

He added: "It should be decided by families. The federal government and the state government, too — except for the court system — ought to stay out of it, as far as I'm concerned."

Culture of death or culture of life? Where should the United States strive to be? All other talk is rehashing, I agree, but it's about what this country should strive to be. Culture of death or a culture of life?

Hi, BB. Fred's got some 'splainin' to do. He's running for high office. He adores his new children but will not discuss his deceased daughter and knew little about Terri. Why not?

"Betsy Panici died in January 2002 at the age of 38 from a brain injury following cardiac arrest after what was deemed an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

So, what degree of brain injury did Fred's daughter have? ABC didn't dig as you can see.

Was she totally on life support or was there a rush to judgment at a big, shiny, corporate hospital? Did Fred unplug her?

A man so uncomfortable about discussing things is not presidential material, imo. This involves morality, legality, health care issues and he's uncomfortable? That's unfortunate.

The leader of the free world should not be an artful dodger. We've been there, done that already.

PS: There's something bizarre about the topic of this thread. Can o' worms for Fred.

Michael Schiavo stopped going to court in 04 and 05. Why bother when he knew he’d get his wishes? She was murdered and that ain’t no theory.

Terri Schiavo, who died in 2005 after being taken off water and food at her husband’s request, received electrode implants but they were not successful, according to The Inquirer.

Oh really? That’s not what Michael Schiavo said.

The brain stimulator implant was a success,
said her husband, Mike.

I sure miss t'wit, medical expert freeper.

Anyway, this is from Tennessee for Thompson. Thompson uses bioethicker lingo when he says "end of life choices". Those are euthanasia buzz words.

Here's what happened as close as I'm going to find tonight:

Thompson's daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Panici, 38, died in 2002 of an accidental drug overdose, according to the Nashville medical examiner's office. She had been diagnosed as suffering from bipolar disorder.

Panici died on Jan. 30, 2002, six days after being brought unconscious to a hospital emergency room.

fv says: Why did ABC say it was a head injury and cardiac arrest? This is not cut and dried.

If someone uses euthanasia lingo like Fred has, I cannot support them. No sidesteppers will get my vote...Besides, Terri didn't overdose. She was purposefully killed. A president must be president of everyone, even people like Terri.

His daughter and Terri - Fred tries to morally equivocate what may have been valid in his family with what was a felony murder of Terri Schiavo by judicial fiat. Fred should not be president if he's going to personalize issues of the day instead of facing them head on.

Sun, if he were president, he’ll not be a champion or advocate for the disabled. Can anyone show if he even has position papers on disability? I’m betting that he has nothing.

Fred Thompson as President would not stop euthanasia and the culture of death would expand. Dobson may be right about Fred after all.

Fred Thompson, even if he were 100% wrong on this issue, would be right on many other important issues. I know of no other viable candidate who would even come close.

Even if I'd rather have someone who's 100% my friend, I have no problem supporting someone who's 75% my friend in the absence of anyone better.

This thread is not about YOU. But if YOU make personal comments that are dead wrong, don’t expect support. Expect the blunt truth. I need to borrow Casy Casems way back machine for this one... Way Back in Post #153 You responded to a post I made to someone else to tell me how wrong I was. In post # 17, I said "I had all sorts of people telling me I was a bad conservative and part of the "culture of death", they accused me of supporting abortion and all sorts of things, and I kept thinking, who are you guys? and who made you my judge...

I am used to people who can't understand being rude,

This is not a bout truth, it never was.

I don’t know what’s in your heart, but God does, and you can’t lie to God. Remember that

I'll take that under advisement.

Where in any of my posts did I advocate lying to God?

The government’s job is to protect the lives of its citizens.

I disagree strongly, the job of Government is to get the Heck outta my way as much as possible. I do not want a nanny state watching over me, "A government that is powerful enough to protect you is also powerful enough to oppress you." - Unknown, it's called federalisem, and it's a conservative principle.

As for what Terri said or did not say, we weren't there, we don't know, Michael is certainly not a shining example of manhood, but he was still her husband and had the right to do what he did under our law, don't like it? change the law, but don't tell people they are Big meanies, or heartless, work to fix what you say is wrong, or be quiet about it.

This thread has attracted some real apprentice trolls, it so appears. Shucks, hold out hope, that one or two will discover the screensaver of mantras downloaded from DU is all far left crap. And if they dare to peek at Terri Dailies, they will be embarrassed at how little they know from other than far left perspective.

Perhaps they will drop out before initiation.

Now that you mention T'wit, as you recall I posted elsewhere and am not done yet, on that remarkable tribute to our close friend and advocate of Terri this weekend.

We were invited because of our close ties to him, to that great body of conservative thinkers and household names at their regional meeting in Louisville, KY. There, he was eulogized in stunning tribute and the meeting was dedicated to his honor. T'wit was a world class conservative, and we know how he would deal with the detractors here. T'wit is here in muse as he has passed us the baton.

"I have read all the factual data that I can find on this case. Not one word of the provable factual true data supported any of the wild conspiracy stories that the press made up."

Have you read Mark Fuhrman's book on the subject? If you had, you would know that one of the inescapable FACTS of the case, is that the timeline of events provided by Michael Schiavo for the night of Terri's *accident* is at odds with the timelines provided by her family, neighbors, EMS, police and ER personnel.

"This is a case of a husbands ability to make a legal decision that has been entrusted to him by his wife and the laws of the state."

There is strong circumstantial evidence that suggests Michael Schiavo tried to kill Terri. Being unsuccesful in his endeavor to do it himself. Suppose for just one second this is true, and consider your arguments on his behalf in this context.

You are absolutely correct. Terri was murdered. There was no plug pulled from a machine that was breathing for her. She was starved to death.

Suppose for just one second this is true, and consider your arguments on his behalf in this context.

I'd offer a slightly different suggestion: Suppose that a Mr. Shyster had a wife he wanted to get rid of, and he was familiar with Messrs Felos, Greer, et al. With the state of the laws and enforcement as they are, what reason is there to believe he wouldn't be able to incapacitate his wife the way Terri was, and then have her killed in similar fashion?

No matter how pure Mr. Schiavo might be (yes, I know both you and I would smirk at that last bit) there certainly are men in the world who would want to kill their wives if they thought they could get away with it. The government should protect women against such people, but I see no reason to believe it would protect against a husband who schemed as described above.
