Thompson talks of daughter who died

TAMPA, Fla. - Republican Fred Thompson sidestepped a question about the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case last month, saying he didn't remember the details. On Monday he said he's uncomfortable discussing it because of his own daughter's death.

"And this will probably be the last time I ever address it."

He added: "It should be decided by families. The federal government and the state government, too — except for the court system — ought to stay out of it, as far as I'm concerned."

In the absence of any charges being brought against him (much less a conviction) her family wanted to sweep in and take over anyway because they didn't want him to decide for her. But it does not and can not and has not worked that way ever. Your spouse is first in line to be your voice if you cannot speak unless you specify otherwise or they prove themselves unworthy or remove themselves.

No, it hasn't always been this way. You must be very young. Spouses have not always had the legal power to choose death for those who can't speak for themselves. I remember a time when you couldn't choose death for yourself, much less for your spouse.

It has always been assumed that people wish to receive proper medical care and basic human rights. Only recently have so-called living wills been recognized, and even then, only when it can be proven they have actually been enacted by the patient. Until Terri Schiavo's murder, most people had no idea that their right to life had been replaced by the recently invented right to die. Most people had no idea that the so-called right to die could be imposed on them against their will.

It has always been understood that sane people prefer to live. That's why there were such strong restrictions and burden of proof required when we recently began allowing living wills. We were told there would be safeguards. If you had told someone just thirty years ago that this would evolve into people deciding for each other, they would have said "That will never happen." It was too far fetched. Well it's happening now, and it's becoming less and less voluntary.

Go ahead and believe there's no culture of death in Florida.

I've noticed that some people show up on the pro-life threads to spread the message of the culture of death, while denying the culture of death exists. They aren't taken seriously, here or anywhere else.

This thread is not about YOU. But if YOU make personal comments that are dead wrong, don’t expect support. Expect the blunt truth.

I don’t know what’s in your heart, but God does, and you can’t lie to God. Remember that.

“Wesley Smith: What I find terribly ironic, is that in 1998, Terri had more than $700K in her trust account to pay for her care. The bulk of this money instead went to lawyer George Felos and other attorneys, to help end her life.

The government’s job is to protect the lives of its citizens. That is why, for example, we have government-funded suicide prevention centers.”

Again from the link: “The government’s job is to protect the lives of its citizens. That is why, for example, we have government-funded suicide prevention centers.”

According to Cindy Shook, Michael’s girlfriend 1 1/2 years after Terri was hurt, Michael Schiavo said:

“How the hell should I know we never spoke about this, my God I was only 25 years old. How the hell should I know? We were young. We never spoke of this.”

“Pulling the plug on someone who cannot even breathe for themselves and is brain dead is pretty different from starving a person to death. Terri was not on life supports, just food and water through a feeding tube.”

I don’t know the facts on Thompson’s daughter.

I do know the facts about Terri S. and see that as murder.

“Greer wanted Terri dead because he was sick of her case! He said so in the paper.”

Greer belongs in prison.

“If Fred Thompson’s daughter’s accidental overdose was actually an illegal “mercy killing”, then he’s got a big problem on his hands.”

You really get into the speculation thing, don’t you?

“Oh, and the cop in Terri’s room heard her try to say, “I want to live.”

Of course he did. Never mind Terri couldn’t talk.

“The mission is here: www.terrisfight.org. Why don’t you email them from the site and would you be rude to them? Would you? They lost an important family member too.”

Nope, I wouldn’t be rude to them. However, given your comments and attitude, I feel no such restrictions when posting to you.

Her husband was her family. He was her only family as far as the courts were concerned and as far as the law is concerned.

Florida law includes provisions by which a guardian can seek a divorce on behalf of an incapacitated ward. If Terri had an honest guardian, such a divorce would have been sought and granted. As Terri's guardian, however, Michael refused to allow such action to be taken on her behalf.

Florida law has procedures by which guardianships may be challenged; the guardians must then justify their actions under oath. Judge Greer initially scheduled the guardianship challenge after Terri was supposed to be dead. When she wasn't killed, he granted a continuance. When the hearing rolled around, Michael's lawyer showed up to say Michael wouldn't appear since Greer hadn't served him in writing. Greer rescheduled for a few weeks out, and again Michael didn't show (because again, he hadn't been notified in writing). Does something not smell funny?

His hesitation to learn about Terri Schiavo or discuss her is a red flag. Then he brings up his daughter as a parallel to Terri's situation. Fred started this by not being forthright to begin with. An overdose is not the same thing as a purposeful, hell bent starvation/dehydration. They were hell bent on killing Terri and although she could have gone to judges chambers, her wheelchair was broken and Greer wouldn't allow her in his courtroom.

In all fairness to Mr. Thompson, I would not be surprised if he really hadn't been able to form a full informed opinion about the Schiavo case because of the emotional similarities to his daughters'. True, Terri's case is in many ways very different, but that doesn't mean Mr. Thompson would have wanted to really look into it.

Still, I wish he had been able to say something like "I haven't followed the case enough to know what to make of everything, but Judge Greer's order that nobody even try to feed Terri by mouth or give her ice chips to ease her pain was just plain wrong." That would have avoided some of the harder questions while still showing a willingness to identify evil.

To begin with, I have never heard of you and have never posted to you directly. Your post made it appear as if I had personally insulted you. I just keep telling the truth about the bad guys. If you like them better than you like freepers with a life changing experience to share, then go find them on the internet.

All the candidates have handlers. The gravity of what happened to Terri likely was overlooked by his handlers. I recall going to an event and speaking with Florida's current attorney general's advance person. That individual didn't even know who Terri was.

McCollum won his race for Fla AG and I did vote for him because the alternatives actually voted against Terri's life. The Fl AG Office does have a civil rights department although you wouldn't know it when Charlie Crist had the job. At least McCollum is a qualified attorney.

Well, Fred's daughter accidentally overdosed so we know what, we don't know who, when or why?

The paper today said today that she did accidentally overdose. If there's no clarity from the campaign, a reporter should ask those questions. Who, when and why?

Ever gone without water for two weeks? The dehydration shrunk her brain, bunny person. She screamed when she was informed the feeding tube was coming out cuz she knew they were gonna try to kill her again. Terri was alert and aware and I'd like to know more about what happened to Fred Thompson's deceased daughter, wouldn't you?

An accidental overdose with what and by whom????? It's documented in the paper and Terri was murdered. It was no accident.

Making up laws? Judge Greer committed a felony when he took Terri’s nutrition and hydration away which killed her. He’s not in prison and endangering more lives unless they go straight to hospice woodside and it’s done behind closed doors without public scrutiny. Pinellas County is nicknamed by attorneys as Death Central. I kid you not.

Michael Schiavo was NOT a competent spouse. His adultery is a misdemeanor and by law, that’s enough to remove him as guardian. It didn’t happen because judges here aren’t making laws. They are breaking laws.
