Media Fail at Fact Checking on 12 Year Old Voice of SCHIP; Blogs(Free Republic) Pick Up Slack
NewsBusters ^ | October 7, 2007

Posted on 10/08/2007 3:28:15 PM PDT by Eric Blair 2084

The media piled on when President Bush used his veto pen on this children's health insurance bill. They tried to drop the absolute moral authority bomb on it big time and paint him as not caring about children. Now it looks like a little backfire is on the horizon.

On September 29th, 12 year old Graeme Frost of Maryland got to do the Democrats’ radio address, in which he told his story of how he and his sister were seriously injured in a car accident, and if it hadn’t been for SCHIP, they wouldn’t be here today. The Baltimore Sun did a story on the family, in which it stated the family couldn’t get health insurance through their work.

"Bonnie Frost works for a medical publishing firm; her husband, Halsey, is a woodworker. They are raising their four children on combined income of about $45,000 a year. Neither gets health insurance through work."

There were many others in the media that swallowed the story whole with its hook. All of them were missing greatly in one major thing, facts.

Freerepublic's icwhatudo, managed to find plenty of missing facts using google:

"First, Mr. Halsey Frost, Graeme’s father, owns his own woodworking design studio, Frostworks, so his claim that he can’t get health insurance through work is shockingly deceptive. He chooses not to get health care for his family. Second, Graeme and his sister Gemma attend the very exclusive Park School, which has a tuition of $20,000 a year, per child. Third, they live in a 3,000+ square foot home in a neighborhood with smaller homes that are selling for at least $400,000. "

Dan Collins concludes:

"I’m glad little Graham and his family were able to get help, and I hope he reaches full rehabilitation. But perhaps the Democrats ought to take more care in the spokespeople they choose, if they wish to tug at our heartstrings."

Then again, as Mark Steyn says:

"But who needs facts when you've got the human-interest angle sewn up?"

The issue of the auto insurance is another thing we don’t know. Presumably they had it, but it’s certain that the limit wouldn’t have come close to covering all the bills for these two kids.

Who was driving the car the kids were in?
THE SUV, Bonnie, the Mother.

Uninsured?
Unknown.

Who was driving the other car?
The tree? Mother Nature, w/seatbelt on.

Also uninsured?
Best insurance in the world, God.

Was either one drunk, or an illegal alien?
Unknown, except the tree was well rooted.

Learned whatever I could provide from original thread, which had a explanation of the SUV hitting a patch of black ice, another violation: Driving too fast for the road conditions. Anyone remember the weather on this date?

The company for which Bonnie Frost works. You would think that she could get insurance through them ,although I suppose there could be a 1 year waiting period.

Of course I’m pretty tired of having to pay MY insurance premiums and everyone else’s as well.

the Baltimore Sun admits that the speech was written by senate staffers and rehearsed until Graeme “got it right”. So the entire thing was a set up by the democrats

I must have missed that the first time around.

I’m enjoying this discredit of the Democrats, hopefully the kid learns a lesson about trusting Democrat speech writers.

I realize that you are doing your best to aid the liberal cause here, but a couple of things stand out. 1) They have a combined income of supposedly 45,000 with 4 kids. 2) somehow they not only feed and clothe these kids on this, but have what appears to be a very nice home even if it is “only” worth 300K 3)With 4 kids I’m sure they pay virtually NO taxes. 4) Pre-existing conditions can be covered under medicaid if they are serious enough (and nothing indicates that they had one) 5) No other details emerge from the accident, but according to the story it was in the family SUV. No mention of whether it was the mother’s fault, or why they didn’t have car insurance (maybe you expect taxpayers to pay for that too) 6) The family is obviously liberal activists (by the stickers on their car) 7) The family can afford tattoos 8) They can afford NYTimes wedding announcements 9)the hard-working family can “afford” to take a week off to record anti-Bush scripted advertisements.
Sorry, no sale on the pity angle. Too many questions. The fact that they were liberal activists long before this seals the deal for me.

I’m not aiding the liberal cause, I’m trying to maintain the credibility of the conservative cause. If just ONE point in this “expose” of how the Frost’s really have gobs of money is clearly shown to be false, then the whole thing will be ridiculed and the credibility of all the websites that promoted it will take a big hit too. It’s extremely unlikely that the family was actually paying $40,000 a year or anything close to that to this private school, and yet that’s being asserted as a “fact” here. If we can’t make an argument without fabricating “facts” out thin air, why should anyone think our argument should be taken seriously?

Some rumors are surfacing that either both kids won full scholarships and the parents have only paid $500 per year for them, or the grandparents have paid for the tuition in full for both kids.

WHICH begs the question: why didn’t the grandparents pay for the kids’ insurance? Seems that would be more important than tuition for a hoity toity school. Let’em attend free public schools!

Mrs. Frost, 26 years old, is a receptionist at the Cat Hospital at Towson, in Baltimore. She graduated from Towson State University. Her father is an electrical engineer at Tracor Inc., a defense electronics manufacturer in Crystal City, Va.,/i>

So not only does dad own a business, mom works and the grandpop is an electrical engineer. If you buy the BS story, you have to also ignor grandpop not kicking in a few bucks to help with the insurance.

Here, have a beer!
You Are Guinness
You know beer well, and you'll only drink the best beers in the world.
Watered down beers disgust you, as do the people who drink them.
When you drink, you tend to become a bit of a know it all - especially about subjects you don't know well.
But your friends tolerate your drunken ways, because you introduce them to the best beers around.
What's Your Beer Personality?

You're missing an important point.

The father's business probably can't stand a lot of scrutiny [especially if ears perk up at the IRS over this story]. This means that the parents are such committed Democrat activists that BDS syndrome has turned them into idiots.

It's not going to matter if one or two points of icwhatudo's rebuttal are wrong if the family gets shaken down by the government revenooers.

What WAS the father thinking?!!!?
