It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:
A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian
I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there
Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"
I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.
That's my guy.
Excellent response from the next President :)
Beautiful response. Fred is his own man, and that is going to resonate throughout his campaign, and is something that will pull in people who might otherwise disagree with one or more of his positions.
That was an excellent response from Thompson. Dobson was way off base to say what he did. It’s people like him that give the religious right a bad name.
If mclame can kick the Christians off the ‘truth’ bus....Fred will be different, and kick the Christians out of his ‘red’ truck.
My take on Fred is he is not as conservative as I would like, but he is conservative enough. He is not my first choice and I am still supporting Duncan Hunter, but I could vote for him. I can’t vote for Rino Rudy.
Frankly Dobson has been a real jerk to Thompson and I think Fred made it very clear that he will kiss no ones ring to be President. I thought it was refreshing and laudable.
btw, remember Dobson said he didnt believe Thompson to be a Christian.
Yep, that’s my Fred. Who does this Dobson character think he is?
Notice that Rudy hasn’t said anything about Rush and the leftists who attack free speech. Anyone else hear anything from Rudy?
Principles, that’s what you need to be President. Something Hillary Matters doesn’t understand.
Mine too.
Ditto except that Tancredo was my first choice.
Apparently Thompson didn’t kiss Dobson’s ring (or whatever it is he likes to have kissed) so he is being blackballed by the self appointed religious leader. Go Thompson, get the nomination. Go Dobson, I don’t care where just go.
Along with his unequivolcal, clear statement of support for Rush yesterday, this backhand of Dobson sets Fred apart from his Republican rivals. He won’t go on bended knee to anyone.
And lets be realistic here. When Fred hooks up with the Hildabeast in the general, which candidate, pray tell, will Dobson support?
Really? Sounds stupid to me.
I’m telling you Thompson - Hunter - the Gonzo candidates in reverse.
Good for Fred!
Well, I guess Thompson won’t be getting Dobson’s vote. Seems like none of the declared candidates will be getting Dobson’s vote.
It looks like the Christian political movement has come full circle. Before Falwell, Christians stayed at home and made no impact on the political process. Then Falwell changed that. Christians pretty much ran the show for 20 years. Now Christians are going back to sulking in the corner.
Third party.
Outstanding. Hooray Fred! Our differences are microscopically insignificant when compared with those who lie to us, want to enslave us and want to kill us.
