Zimbabwe runs out of bread

Harare admits land reform has failed as the deadline passes for the last white farmers to leave their land.

Zimbabwe's bakeries have shut and supermarkets have warned there will be no bread for the foreseeable future as the government admitted that wheat production had collapsed following the seizure of white-owned farms.

The agricultural ministry announcement that the wheat harvest is only about a third of what is required, and that imports are held up by lack of hard currency, came as a deadline passed today for the last white farmers to leave their land or face prosecution for trespass.

The maize harvest is expected to be equally dire and price controls to contain hyperinflation have emptied the stores of most other foodstuffs...

Last week, the government said it plans to import 100,000 tonnes of wheat but acknowledged that a shipment of 35,000 tonnes was held up in Mozambique because of a shortage of hard currency to pay for it.

The agriculture minister, Rugare Gumbo, has blamed the food shortages on black farmers who have taken over formerly white-owned land.

"I am painfully aware of the widespread theft of stock, farm produce, irrigation equipment and the general vandalism of infrastructure by our new farmers," ...

"I am disappointed that our new farmers have proved to be failures since the start of the land reform programme in 2000..."

The ministry of agriculture has also blamed electricity shortages...

The power shortages are likely to continue. Mozambique has reduced electricity supplies to Zimbabwe because of a $35m... unpaid bill...

Zimbabwe, once the world's second largest exporter of tobacco, has also seen production of its main cash crop nosedive...

excerpt

March 29, 1998 New York Times

By JAMES BENNET

President Clinton commemorated the moral courage of the long struggle against apartheid here today, but he also turned his attention to the gritty, complex tasks of state-building, crime-fighting and economic development that have succeeded it.

In this sprawling collection of townships, the President and Hillary Rodham Clinton planted a tree at the memorial to the 13-year-old Hector Peterson, whose shooting death on June 16, 1976, led to riots and galvanized the anti-apartheid movement. The boy was the first black killed by the police while protesting a law mandating the use of Afrikaans, the language of the Dutch settlers, in the schools.

snip

Mandated for use in schools, not in homes. The British in India taught English and that common language allowed communication throughout the country, a country with over 400 dialects.

reminds me of my favourite Zimbabwe story...when the ‘veterans’ first began to take over the farms, one native set himself up in a shack on 400 acres and planted a patch of corn...

but a few weeks later, along came another ‘veteran’ who also wanted to build a little shack and plant some corn on the same 400 acres...

when ‘veteran’ two wouldn’t leave, ‘veteran’ one shot him.

(Veterans are former guerrillas in the war for independence.)

How about no aid to Zimbabwe period. Why would you give any country that butchered white men and women foreign aid. Their savages and besides President Bush now wants to give foreign aid to our dear friends the North Koreans.

How did you reach that conclusion? I haven't read any post here
that makes such an inference. Could you be specific?

Thanks George76. This is what happened because Mugabe was permitted to crust all opposition.

To: Comparative Advantage

New Orleans has it’s problems but to compare it to Zimbabwe is completely idiotic, even in jest.

New Zimbabwe recipe
Mugabe stew
Take a pound of nothing and mix it with 2 tablespoons of nothing and add a pinch of nothing.
Dinner is served. Serves everyone in Zimbabwe except Mugabe and friends (who are probably eating foie gras and truffles)

Thanks for your favorite Z story.

Putting non farmers on a farm hoping that they can learn to farm is silly.

Plus all the other stuff.

Modified recipe.

Corn Meal with Pumpkin (Zimbabwean Nhopi 2007)
serves 1/4

Steal 1 tablespoon corn meal from neighbor. If not available, try using bark or weeds.

Sugar has been deleted from this recipe due to unavailability.

2 cups water, preferably from middle of puddle to minimize scum and mud

1 teaspoon peanut butter if available (may substitute dirt)

A piece of rotten pumpkin if you can find or steal it

Salt to taste

Secretly heat the water in the sun, and put in the corn meal, bark or weeds. Maintain a watch for starving people who may try to take your food by force.

Stir frequently, until it’s softened a bit. Don’t waste too much time on this. Someone may see you.

Next, stir in the rotten pumpkin bit, if you have it.

Then add the peanut butter (dirt) and salt. Combine all ingredients.

Drink any pumpkin water. Serve immediately with several blades of grass.
