WASHINGTON Some of the top leaders in Christian pro-family activism including James Dobson of Focus on the Family met in Salt Lake City yesterday to plot a strategy if Rudy Giuliani or another supporter of legalized abortion is nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate.
Not only was there a consensus among activists to withhold support for the Republican nominee, there was even discussion about supporting the entry of a new candidate to challenge the frontrunners.
It's no secret that Dobson, founder of one of the largest Christian ministries in the country, has no use for Giuliani.
In June, he said: "I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision. If given a Hobson's Dobson's? choice between him and Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran or if worse comes to worst not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else."
Dobson reportedly drove from his headquarters Colorado Springs to the private meeting, held between sessions of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City this weekend, just to weigh in with other leaders of family groups, including the Family Research Council, Bott Broadcasting, Capitol Resource Institute, Salem Communications, Eagle Forum and Concerned Women for America

I don't especially care for Rudy, but any republican candidate will be preferable to Hillary.
The stated positions on issues are of marginal value with politicians, especially Hillary.
The religious issues are important and I grant you that Rudy is poor in those areas, but not as bad as Hillary.
The drift in our form of government is very important to the future of the country. Hillary is a socialist, Rudy or any of the Republicans are not.
The competence issue maybe the most important and no one will address it. Hillary and the other democrat candidates have always been jackals sniping from the sidelines. Rudy is the only real proven administrator in the bunch. What good is it to have all the right positions on issues if you can't manage your way out of a paper bag?
Of course then there is the corruption issue and Hillary is definitely number one in that area.
I've always had great respect for James Dobson and he is most certainly a moral man who has this country's well-being uppermost in his mind.
I'm observing an uncharacteristic flip from political common sense in him. It is not an auspicious omen when he starts shooting across the bow of Republican candidates, even going so far as to state ominously that he doesn't believe one of them is a Christian.....as if he has a magic eye or something.
Some people who believe they can influence millions through displays of moral authority and pursuasion can sometimes become slightly over-the-top. I sincerely hope Dobson stops issuing little subtle fatwas on any and all of the GOP candidates......and instead praises the ones he feels most closely match his ideals, and shut up about the others.
It would be even more helpful if he takes aim at the 'Rat candidates. It's not too early to start banging away on Hillary and Obama. I wonder how many bible-believers there are among all their leftist and marxist candidates.
Only time will tell if I've misjudged Dr. Dobson. As of right now, I stand by my assessment of him based on his recent statements. We'll see how far he's going to take his political remarks as the various campaigns progress.
It's worth noting that Gary Bauer immediately stepped right in to calm things down. And probably to help check Dobson from making more of a danged fool of himself than he already has these past two weeks.
Finally, James Dobson has chosen to insert himself into the Republican primary campaign. Therefore he's fair game for both kudos and criticisms. I'm sure he realizes this, and his supporters should as well.
Leni
Oh Good Lord! Aren't you the little drama queen! Please tell me which Republican candidate is a MARXIST and will roll over and appease Radical Islam!
Now run along...
Sorry I had to go pick tomatoes as this area was suppose to get thunderstorms.
I do not recall reading in either John or Acts anything about anyone being required to be crucified upside down in Rome as part of preaching the gospel, not that some never suffered that fate. The Constitution of these United States is a political document that preserves our right to preach the gospel as well as live life in a Christian manner. That would require Christians to be 'political' in awareness of candidates who are in this world that would seek to destroy the rule of law. Further there is nothing that is Written that instructs Christians to be second class citizens and turn blind eyes to the worldly nature of peoples who attempt to reject the very One who does bless us as individuals and as a nation.
Christ had much to say about the LAW, and He did not come to destroy it but to fulfill, so even that LAW given by Moses still stands to even this day. Christ did foretell of those that sit in the seat of Moses and how they would pervert and corrupt the LAW....
Christians should be learned enough in what Christ taught to discern when a politician makes claims about what is Christian to know if a deception is being planted.
In my view, this is the most important line in the entire WND article:
“...some of those present found candidate Mitt Romney acceptable as a nominee...”
It is the only piece of information in the article which indicates a path forward which will avoid splitting the conservative vote and handing the Presidency to Hillary Clinton. All of the rest is a discussion about how to lose.
Hello! You're not marrying the person.
Nice, now answer the question. After all, she or it would be a Republican. At least you would have its word on it.
John 16: 2-4.
That is total lying BS! Rudy for all of his social issue faults, is very different from them in his fiscal ideology. Rudy endorsed Forbes Flat Tax. How on earth is that the same as the Clinton's tax ideology? You show your gross ignorance on this subject. We criticize mindless boobs on the left when they just keep ranting nonsense over and over again, regardless of the facts.
They did it before by turning on us last year, they will do it again. I don’t believe the beast will win, but if she does she will be the worst nightmare they ever had and largely their own fault. Somebody said “We get the government we deserve.”
What do you think of these positions?
Abortion/Life
1. Right to Life Amendment:
I would amend the U.S. Constitution and provide blanket protection to all unborn children from the moment of conception by prohibiting any state or federal law that denies the personhood of the unborn. Likewise, I have also introduced the Right to Life Act, which would legally define personhood as the moment of conception and, therefore, guarantee all constitutional rights and protections, including life, to the unborn without utilizing a constitutional amendment.
2. Federal laws relating to abortion and human life protections (e.g, embryonic research and end of life, etc.):
There are several areas of federal law that require human life protections. I have cosponsored the following pieces of legislation:
The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, which would amend the federal criminal code to prohibit transporting a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion, if this action circumvents the minor’s native state’s parental involvement law. I voted in favor of this bill when it passed the House 270-157 on April 27, 2005.
The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2005, which would prohibit and criminalize efforts at reproductive cloning.
The Parent’s Right to Know Act of 2005, which would prohibit federal funding to carry out federal family planning programs in which service providers in the project knowingly provides contraceptive drugs or devices to a minor, except in specific circumstances.
The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006, which would require abortion providers to notify women who want to have an abortion 20 weeks after fertilization that the evidence suggests their unborn child feels pain and they may request anesthesia for their unborn child in order to reduce or eliminate the pain.
I have also supported human life protection efforts with the following votes:
I supported the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act, banning the practice of fetal farming, the creation of embryos specifically for the purposes of scientific research.
I voted in favor of the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, which would direct federal funding to stem-cell research that does not rely on embryos.
I voted against the Stem-Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, which would have directed the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct and support research that utilizes human embryonic stem-cells, regardless of the date on which the stem-cells were derived from a human embryo.
I voted against amendments offered to the National Defense Authorization Act permitting taxpayer funded military facilities overseas to be used to support abortions on demand for military women and military dependents.
I voted against amendments providing UN funding to groups that support coercive abortion programs.
Cheers!
Please read what he says.
Leni, may I suggest & doesn't it occur to you that suddenly it's 'open season' on Dobson....he is being demonized coming and going, right and left!!
The 'powers that be' who want to shape this country to their political persuasion still feel threatened by Dr.Dobson because they know....without a shadow of a doubt...he will hold to his convictions/conscience to the death!
He is in their way.....and folks who are as like minded as he are in the way too.
He won't go down without a fight & neither will the rest of us.
We will not cede our families, our freedom or this beloved nation to the propaganda and thuggery of RINO's in the Republican Party.
For goodness sakes, read all of Man50D's posts....he says it well.
I have no idea who Man50D is....never met him....but I'm glad he's at FR to support positions I hold dear.
And last....but not least....thank-you Leni for your kind words to me.
In a perfect world, where white is white and black is black, your response in #213 would make sense.
But we are continually faced with varying shades of gray. No man/woman is perfect, including and especially those running for political office. They all carry baggage. They all hold political views which differ somewhat from my own.
I’m sure you’ve heard this: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)
The primary process is the time for Christians and pro-lifers to step forward and vote their principles. And we pray that the right man/woman wins. But in the general election, if it comes down to Giuliani vs. Clinton, “good men” (ala Burke) have got to vote for Giuliani because the results of staying home might be devastating to this nation AND the world.
Stephen Peroutka, of very deep pockets and strong pro-life principles is considering a run in 2008. I respect his principles, but I dread reliving the Vote for Perot equals a Clinton again. I’m sure that he is on Dobson’s speed dial.
