Father Waylays Daughter's Lover
Manchester Union Leader ^ | September 22, 2007 | Greta Cuyler

Posted on 09/22/2007 6:21:10 AM PDT by Jim Noble

WEARE – A father attacked his daughter's boyfriend last week after learning the boy had sex with the underage girl, police said.

It was about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, when the man stormed onto the grounds of John J. Stark High School and beat up the 17-year-old from Henniker. School was just letting out, and many students witnessed the attack, said Detective Lou Chatel.

The boy suffered bruising and later received two stitches to his face.

The father was charged with simple assault, a Class B felony.

Police said the boy is dating the man's 15-year-old daughter.

The man discovered the two had had sex earlier that day, during school hours but not on school property, police said.

Under state law, a 15-year-old cannot consent to sex; therefore, police are investigating the allegation as a sexual assault.

The New Hampshire Union Leader has a policy of not identifying sexual assault victims. For that reason, the newspaper is not identifying the father.

Both students attend John Stark High School. The girl lives in Weare.

Chatel said there have been no arrests in the sex case, but he expects there will be.

The father ruined that girls life. The girl ruined that girl's life.

Both statements appear over the top. The girl made a terrible mistake and the boyfriend is a lowlife who took advantage of an underaged girl.

The boy should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. However the girl needs to understand what she did is wrong. Having said that the girl should not be made to feel she has ruined her life and is doomed to eternal damnation. She is only fifteen years old and I am sure God will find a way to forgive her.

Hopefully the girl comes from a good family and realizes what she did is wrong. Let's remember that all of us sin. Good people sometimes do very stupid and bad things. I am assuming she feels terrible about what she did. She is probably crippled with shame, regret, saddness and fear.

Of course she should be appropriately punished and sanctioned for her actions by her parents. However, what she probably needs now is love, guidance and forgiveness. Her father will not be able to give her any of those things if he is in jail.

Anyone who supports this man’s act must forever refrain from posting disparaging comments about “honor killings” in the Middle East. It’s the exact same belief in action: children are their parents’ personal property.

You think a jury would convict this guy?

It’s high school. They start at 7:15 in the morning and are out, usually around 1:30 or 2.

That's a bit unusual. In most places these days, it's the elementary kids who start early and the high school kids start later. (the theory being that HS kids stay up too late and are useless in the early morning) In my day the High School and Jr. High School kids started 15 minutes earlier and got out 15 minutes later than the elementary kids. But we didn't have buses to ride to school, except in some extra ordinary cases, such as special education students who were only accommodated in a few schools, and so could have much farther to go. Thus we did not need staggered hours to accommodate reuse of the buses.

Our hours were 8:45 to 3:15 for high school and Jr. High and 9:00 to 3:00 for elementary.

Great point. This was an “honor beating.” All strict Muslims would understand.

There is a such a thing as a citizen's arrest.

You're not allowed to use force to effectuate a citizen's arrest unless you observed a felony.

Try to do a citizen's arrest, and lawyers will come down upon you like a herd of jackals.

Possibly. You never know what a judge or jury is going to do, and if it were someone I care about, I wouldn't want to take the chance. Not to mention the time involved to defend the case, legal fees, damage to reputation. Most importantly, it just wasn't the wisest way to behave on his part, and I'd want my children's father to behave wisely. Like the Good Book says, Be ye angry, and sin not.

A discussion about "teen sex" and what should be done about it probably should be on a different thread.

This is about (1) an 'adult' (maybe 'over age of consent' is a better term) sexually assaulting a minor (under age of consent) and (2) a parent of this minor assaulting the young man.

The "teen sex" term is too vague. What would we say about the same situation if the girl was 14? 13? What if the boy was 18? 19? Ages do make a difference but in this case only the fact that one of the two was under the age of consent matters.

It was a crime and I'm convinced this probably would never have been addressed by the authorities if the father didn't beat his face in.

but enforcing the law might just make them think twice before they start having sex, because starting sexual relationships so early will increase the possibility of doing real damage to their futures.

LOL.

Making teenage sex against the law won't accomplish much, except to make a bunch of teenaged criminals. Teens will have sex regardless of what the law says. It takes serious value-driven indoctrination to counteract the hormonal urges. The law cannot accomplish that.

You assume teenagers are rational. I think that's amusing.

Ouch. A few stitches is now equal to death? Sorry, I don’t agree in the least and neither does the law.

A clear case of temporary insanity.

One of the few fathers who got to get some justice before the legal system had their turn.

Man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but when separated from law and justice, he is the worst of all. Aristotle

No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man's permission when we ask him to obey it. Obedience to the law is demanded as a right; not asked as a favor. Theodore Roosevelt

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions. Ronald Reagan

“A discussion about “teen sex” and what should be done about it probably should be on a different thread.”

Your opinion. The term was used in response to suggestions that age of consent laws would discourage teen sex.

Everything else you mention has been discussed, and I’ve asked those same questions and no one has provided answers or opinions. The laws are to protect teens and pre-teens from adults, and that dividing line between adult (age of consent) and too young is different in different states.

My sense is that, among teens, more than three years age difference would put the responsibility on the older boy or girl. But two year age differences are very, very common in teen dating. It probably compensates for the fact that teen girls are ahead of boys in maturity. And I guarantee you the unreported instances of statutory rape among teens a few months to two years age difference runs into a few hundred thousand cases per year nationwide. (about 4 million kids per grade).

Of course this would never have been prosecuted if the father hadn’t drawn attention to it. And as I said earlier, the teens aren’t exactly turning themselves in for breaking the law.

Do you really want tens, or even hundreds of thousands of teens sent to prison every year?
