Motorcycle ridership is on the increase, with total registrations climbing 51 percent between 2000 and 2005 and contributing to the rise in motorcyclist deaths.

Why the focus on high-performance motorcycles? It would seem to me that -- all other things being equal -- the sheer increase in the number of motorcycles on the road would naturally lead to an increase in motorcycle accident deaths.

The New Sport-Bikes are great (love’em) of course their not the problem.

Lets Blame: The Crazy Congestions and Bad Roads. The Drivers like Truckers, Soccer Moms (in Suv’s with tinted windows), AA-Action babes in Kias, Illegal Immigrants in Pickups and Vans these idiots are responsible for far more the carnage on the roads.

The New Riders: Completely inexperienced riders starting out (First Bike) on Liter Class Gixxers, Ninjas, CBR-1000’s, Hyabusa’s, OMG is that Crazy Suicide. Can you say starter bike, learn on a Dirt Bike, Moped, etc… LOL, its just so America, Gotta have the biggest baddest now.

You can’t legislate this stuff, America is just full of total Morons (On Both Sides), which is why I sold my Sport-Bike and ride a Mountain Bikes now. But I miss the Bike itself...

“Supersports are built on racing platforms but modified for the highway and sold to consumers.”

I wish. To bad that’s not true. I’d like to have Ducati’s GP bike for the street......not the $70,000.00 “copy” of one.

“capping the speed of these street-legal racing machines at the factory might be one way to reduce their risk.”

Or not....

All that’s really needed is a tiered licensing system like England.

Same old tired argument here..... remember when the first GSXR’s came out in the mid-late 80’s..... NBC did a few incredibly stooopid TV “specials” on how the Japs were getting back at us for WWII. “They” were killing our kids with Suzuki’s....LOL

Too funny.

I’m curious to see what the numbers would be if you broke out the “rider at fault” and “cager at fault” numbers. I suspect you’d see a large rise in the latter category accounting for most of this.

The idiots who replace their natural betwixt the legs manhood with the crotchrocket and drive like jacka$$es deserve to die horrible deaths from their stupidities.

It is truly a shame when innocent others must lose their lives, as well. And as bad, when emergency crews have to scrape up the guts and "brains" of the deathbike pinheads.

Wow! Zig-zagging through heavy traffic on the freeway doing wheelies at 80 mph is dangerous? Who knew.

I’m sorry...

I’m one of those who firmly believe that before you take a Supersport on the street, you need to learn how the Supersport handles in the dirt.

(that’s a joke, by the way)

I vote newbies....... there are tons of them on the road.

They love our mountains and on a weekend there are all over. They are curteous and numerous.

The fact that the average cc has gone up can be explained by the fact that the size of engines has steadily gone up. This year’s top bikes have an engine with the same displacement as a Mazda Miata.

The agenda in the article appears to be using facts that back up the agenda but ignoring obvious reasons for the facts. THings like, most younger, less experienced riders buy the sport bikes. Sport bikes offer the best horsepower/price ratio. Cruisers have more shielding to protect the riders. Sport bikes, like fighter planes, are more unstable than cruisers and tour bikes, to enhance performance.
