Russia tests powerful 'dad of all bombs'
Houston Chronicle/AP ^ | Sept. 11, 2007

MOSCOW — The Russian military has successfully tested what it described as the world's most powerful non-nuclear air-delivered bomb, Russia's state television reported Tuesday.

Channel One television said the new ordnance, nicknamed the "dad of all bombs" is four times more powerful than the U.S. "mother of all bombs."

"The tests have shown that the new air-delivered ordnance is comparable to a nuclear weapon in its efficiency and capability," Alexander Rukhsin, a deputy chief of the Russian military's General Staff, said in televised remarks.

The statement comes amid the Kremlin's efforts to restore Russia's global clout and rebuild the nation's military might.

The U.S. Massive Ordnance Air Blast, nicknamed the Mother Of All Bombs, is a large-yield satellite-guided, air delivered bomb described as the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in history.

After eating said chili my dad, ensconced in his recliner in the living room in front of the TV [...]

It is merely an in-built, God given mechanism designed to create the sufficient perimeter of solitude required for after-dinner napping, a needful remedy for good digestion. It is also useful during NASCAR events on television, and certain church functions.

As an aside, the residual effect permanently "marks" a man's designated recliner as the throne of the house, and prevents others (including Mother in law) from attempting to usurp said throne.

The Buran. Another Russian knock-off failure

Buran was opposed by pretty much everyone in the Soviet space bureaucracy. It was pushed by the "Me too" gang in the Kremlin.

The Russian - or Soviet - Space people have always been extremely pragmatic. Note that our dear ISS would be SOL without Progress re-supply missions and even Soyuz manned transport - which was critical when the Shuttle went down for the second time.

Russian space practice has always been conservative when left to their engineers. The Buran actually worked just fine for what it was (and the fact that it has gun installations tells you what they intended it for). But it was dumped when cost reality met engineering pragmatism. And they went back to their tried and true expendables, using fairly basic engine and fuels technologies (except for the occasional interesting twist like Staged Combustion).

They have a real point with that attitude. It's given them routine, assured access to space. Unlike us.

Usually the Ruskies are just jawboning us with these announcements, but *something* knocked the crap out of the main Russian seismic server:

No kidding - 4 of those in an optimized spread pattern would be far more destructive than all 4 in the same spot.

Instead of hotlinking, take a screen shot (alt-PrtScn), save it, upload it to Image Shack or any other free image hosting site, then link to that. Problem solved.

how do you read this thing? Are you able to work out what time was detonation — and how large was explosion?

Very impressive of you...

Do the Russians have a plane capable of delivering a 44 ton bomb?

Good idea. Have at it.

It's not my post. If I were posting I would at least make sure that I wasn't hotlinking to a constantly changing gif and commenting about the data in it. I thought you were doing that because of ignorance, not laziness. But hey, if you can't be bothered and don't think your comment is all that important, I'm not going to do your work for you.

I wonder if by “air delivery” they pushed it off the roof of a building?

The mother in law of all bombs would refuse to drop because her ungrateful children never call or write or do anything to acknowledge her balistic superiority, in fact forget it just take it home. Today is just not a good day for explosions.

We really ought to pull this guy out of retirement, dust him off and put his 170 IQ to positive use against international communism and islamofascism...

The An-124 Condor is slightly larger than the C-5 Galaxy and has a tail ramp for roll-on roll-off capability.

The An-225 Cossack is the largest airplane in the world but doesn’t have the rear ramp.

I guess the Mother in Law of all bombs, when dropped, makes entire populations feel like they aren’t earning enough to support their households.

Long term the damage it causes makes children think Mom doesn’t really love Dad, but settled for their sake.

Sure, I believe them.

If it were true, they wouldn't talk about it.

Putin's usual bluster reminds me of the joke popular behind the Iron Curtain as the computer revolution began to take off:

"They cannot equal the Soviet microchip—the biggest microchip in the world!"
