Fortunately, most people want to hear what the General has to say, not this run-of-the-mill diplomat who has exactly zero ability to subtly harpoon the inquisitor as Gen. Petreus can and does. The Dems want to hear what Crocker has to say. He is actually providing the most important testimony. The military part is just about buying time so the political part can be made to work. The Dems have now hitched their argument to the political part saying that we have only met three of the 18 objectives and that no matter what we do militarily, a political solution can't be reached, hence withdraw the troops so as not to waste any more American personnel.
