Paul's supporters disappointed by results
Dallas Morning News ^ | September 2, 2007 | GROMER JEFFERS Jr.

As the vote tallies were announced at the Texas Republican straw poll Saturday, at least one supporter of Rep. Ron Paul of Lake Jackson couldn't contain his frustration.

"Fix!" he yelled from the back of the ballroom at the Fort Worth Convention Center. "There's no way."

The congressman put a great deal of effort into the event in his home state, even paying to bus in supporters. They seemed to be the largest force in town. So it was a disappointment to those supporters when he came in third.

Some were convinced that Dr. Paul won.

"The results are totally wrong," said Jason Scarbrough, a Paul supporter who lives near Houston. "There were 10 times as many Ron Paul supporters here than anyone else had. There's just no way."

Though there were clearly more Paul people at the straw poll event, the congressman with the libertarian leanings had a much smaller base of support among those who could vote.

Even Dr. Paul conceded that he didn't think he could win.

"They made it very restrictive," Dr. Paul said at a rally Friday night. "But we're trying to build the party. If they want us to build the party, we can."

Saturday's vote disappointed Kathy Massey, a 45-year-old Houston woman who works in the petroleum industry.

She described Dr. Paul as a man of integrity who wants the Bill of Rights restored – and a political titan.

"Las Vegas oddsmakers say he's the only one who can beat" Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ms. Massey said, without offering proof.

I don’t think the followers of any right of center candidate should be attacked here. And just because a guy may have backed a tenet of the left of center ideology, that doesn’t make him or his suppert wholely owned by the left.

The candidate’s policies should be attacked or supported on the merits. Each candidate should rise or fall on the merits of their positions. They shouldn’t rise or fall because people called them names or slandered them.

I don’t think there’s any need to call Paul a kook or disparage his supporters

Why not? Their ideology in some cases is to the left of Kucinich and their behavior is right out of moonbat 101. What's not to mock?

"I have some reservations on his foreign policy."

Yeah, kind of like I have reservations about driving a Mack Truck across a bridge built out of toothpicks.

they sound like fans of the team who just lost their 10th game in a row and blamed it on the officials...

They sound like Michigan fans after losing to Appalachian State.

But the majority of Paul bashers do exactly that. They go beyond his criticism of foreign policy and say that he's in bed with terrorists, photoshopping pics of Paul with terrorists even. Some have even insinuated that Paul is pro-abortion.

But these posts aren't deleted, which means that it's open season on Paul here.

“the” WA poll?

I know of at least one WA poll that was a landslide for Fred Thompson.

The mocking game devolves into an almost intollerable situation months before the election takes place. It does a disservice to the forum, the supporters of candiates and all candidates.

Please list the policy or actions you don’t like. I’m sure others will agree with you. You might in fact be surprised to find that even Paul supporters would agree with you on certain topics.

It’s pointless for us to attack each other with namecalling making enemies. It’s just divides us.

We should nurture a climate were we can support the elected official after the election, continuing to disagree on certain points.

Well, Paul has disagreed with the Truthers, so I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.

If you disagree with Paul that we shouldn't be sending foreign aid boondoggles to countries who'll use it against us one day, or stop meddling in the affairs of other nations, then you're not a conservative in the traditional sense.

What I'm saying is that straw polls Paul won, they were dismissed as being "nothing." But polls Hunter or Romney or Fred won, it's the gospel.

If ever there was such rank hypocrisy here on FR, it's on the Paul threads.

Hey, nothing wrong if you like early 19th century foreign policy... ‘cept this is the 21st century. I don’t consider nation-building to be a dirty phrase.

This quote and his failure to apologize for blaming the USA for 9-11 sickens me.

The majority of many good groups do things that aren’t admirable. That’s human nature.

Whenever you can, come along and point out that the objectionable material is non-factual. There’s no point in lowering youself to their level.

As for what is allowed to remain here or not, the forum management generally doesn’t want to take sides. It’s probably not open season. It’s probably more like they don’t want to stop folks form lampooning people they disagree with.

I don’t think the lampooning is right in all instances, but there mustn’t be any grounds for the lampoon to be based on, or it’s going to be considered to be somewhat reasoned for the lampoons to exist. Mind you I’m not making any determination regarding any specific photoshopped items that have poped up here.

It’s not easy backing second tier candidates. I can tell your from experience, you’re going to have to have a thick skin. Just rise above it.

I would ask others to rise above their inclinations to make this personal as well.

The forum will remain civil or it will devolve into a miserable place for us to inhabit for the next 14 months.

My bottom line is that whoever is the Republican candidate gets my vote, even if I have to hold my nose and grit my teeth to pull that lever.
