Emerson makes restrooms gender-neutral
Boston Globe ^ | September 1, 2007 | Emily A. Canal

On the inside, a set of bathrooms at Emerson College looks like standard fare. On the outside, there are newfangled signs to ease the concerns of students who prefer not to signal that they are entering a men's or women's bathroom. The symbols are gender-neutral, a picture of a man and a woman. In response to students' pleas, Emerson has changed the signs that used to be aimed at a specific gender on 21 restrooms in campus buildings and one of the college's two dormitories. Emerson's changes, made in preparation for the upcoming school year, mirror moves by Tufts University and the University of Vermont, part of a small but growing number of universities modifying policies and facilities on behalf of transgender students. Several colleges have amended nondiscrimination policies to include gender identity, but student groups recently began pursuing more concrete changes, including gender-neutral housing, locker rooms, and bathrooms.

I got new for you, many years ago I managed an office complex for the company I worked for. As part of my duties I had to knock first and enter an inspect the women’s facility as well as the men’s and let me tell you women can leave disgusting things behind on or around the commode just as well as men and some that men don’t leave behind. To single out men for your comments shows your ignorance.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. If you want on/off this list, please freepmail me. The main Homeschool Ping List by DaveLoneRanger handles the homeschool-specific articles.

Even though it's not K-12 education, I thought this would be good to keep up on.

Well it may be a great restaurant, but first you have to stomach going through the town.

I am certainly one of them! And know quite a few, some who smoke. Now they really are getting PO’d and I can’t blame them. The funniest thing I heard lately was one of the smokers saying, “little do they realize, this little cigg is the probably the only thing keeping me from choking the day light s out of the all of em!”

But I agree. A lot of us are just about ready to snap.

...on behalf of transgender students.

This transgender thing sounds like attention-seeking behavior to me.

Why don't they just stick to the peanut allergy thing.

That's a lot less icky.

Mens bathrooms are more nasty and smell worse. Sorry guys they just do.

I call BS on this. I cleaned bathrooms for three years.

I have a hard time with the thought of walking into a restroom somewhere and finding a MAN in there! I would walk out and use the bathroom elsewhere. It is opening up Pandora’s box, IMHO.

"This will bring more equal opportunities to the students of Emerson," said Jessica Ganon, a junior at Emerson who campaigned with fellow students to get the school to provide the gender-neutral bathrooms. "I am much happier that this makes life easier for others. I felt sorry for those who felt unsure of where to go."

I had to read that last sentence a couple times before I realized that a college student actually said it. How can anyone not know where to go? One is either a man or a woman. Just because one "feels" like the opposite sex or wants to be the opposite sex, does not make them the opposite sex. The Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves that our country is pandering to this immorality.

As a woman, I would not feel safe or want to use a "gender neutral" restroom or lockerroom unless it is only a one person. I know there will be guys that are in there to sneak a peak at a woman going the restroom or getting changed. Also, I think it is more hygenic to have a bathroom and lockerroom for each sex. I also would hate to live in a house with guys and girls at college. I wouldn't feel comfortable.

OREGONIANS, please note:
This is about to become law in the entire state of Oregon (not just a college campus, ANY public restroom); the State legislature is pushing it through, grass-roots groups are trying to stop it in the 11th hour. Talk-show guy Lars Larson is helping stir up the protest.

In response to students' pleas,

Which students? I can't imagine more than 5% (maybe 1%) of the student body at any college wants to do their business with the opposite sex in the room.

The colleges want to make the foot-tapping and under-the-stalls signalling more ‘interesting’ and less predictable!!!!!!!!!
